Garmin G5 and GTN 750 ILS approach
ILS approach Rwy 5 at KGON. From FLIBB intersection to MONDI, then to FAF - PINET. I could have shortened the video but instead I elected to show the G5 Directional Indicator and GTN 750 switching automatically from GPSS mode to LOC CDI mode - from 'Magenta' to 'Green'. When all lined up at the FAF, and with the KAP 140 set to ARM APR, the auto pilot goes into 2 axis mode, following the glideslope to the runway. seeing is believing...no words needed to describe ...

Our trip to Johannesburg, and Capetown South africa Feb 26 to march 8, 2011. this video is when we went for a 12 minute helicopter ride in a Eurocopter. Up to the top of the Hanglip mountain as part of the Entabeni Safari Conservancy. Mary went to the front seat while spouse Peter, Peter's sister adrianne, me and Cindy were in the back of a 6 seat helicopter. Worth it!
Thanks for sharing!
When switching from GPS to VLOC, do you need to switch frequency in the NAV window to show the ILS?
When you activate the approach, the ILS frequency shows up in the standby block. u need to put it in the active block. I have recently purchased a 750xi upgrade unit, that is faster and has many of the same features. My last ILS approach showed it auto switched from GPS to LOC. As a sanity check, always make sure you engage LOC when you finally get to the FAF
Thanks for your reply. I’m new to the 750.
Does anybody Know.. On the 750 , when do I load and activate the approach if i’m being vectored ?
I have the same set-up: G5, GTN750, and KAP-140 but mine will not send glideslope data to the AP. The KAP-140 never goes into GS armed or GS mode. My G5 was connected to the KAP-140 using the GAD29B adapter, which states only heading and course is sent over. Do you know how you are getting glide slope sent to the AP?
this is a list of all my avionics. Seems weird you can't arm the GS armed feature. Does not seem right at all. U might have to talk to Garmin directly.
@@MOVwizard OK, thanks. I'll try calling Garmin and see what they say. Thanks for your response.
Keep in mind that this autoswitching of the 750 (and a long-time feature of the Avidyne 4xx/5xx navigators) will cause a Garmin GFCS autopilot to drop off the NAV/APR mode because of 'loss' of the navigation signal when switching from GPS to VLOC. This is annunciated on the G5's AFCS Status Box, but if you aren't including that top line of the G5 PDF in your scan, you will miss the annunciation and thus wonder why the autopilot (or flight director) isn't tracking the now-green CDI.
I have found the KAP 140 will continue to track single axis, when in HDG or NAV mode. When I push the APP mode, I need to be in either GPS or LOC by the time. IN my plane, once I have pushed APP, the autopilot will not to to GS mode until both vertical and horizontal needles have zero'd. once there, the 2 axis feature of the KAP 140 kicks in. This will change when and if I go to a Garmin 500 autopilot should I upgrade.
Im wandering if you can put a Bard Minimum on a G5 ADI when you reached your DA or MDA?
There is no Baro Minimum setting on the G5. However, you could choose to set the altitude bug on the G5 PDF display to remind you of that altitude (nearest 100').
Thanks so much for this video!
your videos would look so much better if you turnred your phone horizontal.
agreed - and if I had a stationary mount!! LOL Was a little bouncy on the way down
agreed. just figuring out how to hold the phone while shooting the approach in IMC. broke out at 1300. yep, would be worth it to redo the video, but at the time, it was cool to watch everything click in when it needed to - esp the 2 axis autopilot
awesome!
