    It would be nice for a group of people with your status confront the national high school organization about this rule. It is an absolute terrible rule. I fight it every single year in my club. All year long I have people jumping on the proper pole according to their technique and skill level. Many many times it is below their weight. But they jump high and they jump safe. It is dangerous when they try to switch during the season to a pole that is too big!

    Another thing that wasn't even talked about in this video is that pole manufacturers aren't even held to the same standard as far as finding the flex number. One company can use a 50 pound weight, another can use a 55 pound weight, another can use a 60 pound weight, and another can use a weight that at 25 kg which is close to 55 pounds, but not exactly. Then you have a company like Altius that measures the flex in inches, while all the other companies do it in cm's. The people at the top think all poles from 5 different companies that are labeled 12' - 150 pounds are the same exact pole, and they're not even close to being the same pole. I guess it's not a requirement to pass math or science class to make rules about pole vault. I never enjoyed math, but even I can figure out that things aren't adding up.

  • @Chillandlaugh
    @Chillandlaugh 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Run into this a lot as a high school Vault coach. Thankfully I have poles in many respectable areas regarding weight. But I also never start a beginning vaulter on a pole with a heavier weight rating. Fundamentals first then bigger poles will come. I think it’s just a money grab I think pole companies are involved in this too so it forces high schools to fork up money to get “needed” poles for their vaulters.

    I went to u dub in 2012 and jumped 17’6 and the answer is. Who cares what pole it is if your coach tells you to trap that pole and jump you hold on and go for it.

  • @HeidiFegles
    @HeidiFegles 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Ya it’s the 5 meter pole 14.4 flex number of course. And almost all pole vaulters are on to small of pole. That’s why you see the sag to no pop off the top. No energy bending the pole to the launch. I was 185 jumping on a 210 lbs weighted pole.

    The MG wasn’t a “Midget.” There wouldn’t have been room for you in his car since Steve drove Frank Shorter to Kenny Moore’s house and was on his way back down the hill. For such a “good friend” you know nothing about the details of the accident. Maybe you weren’t THAT good of a friend.

    • @johnschaefer2238

      Linda if this is you I’m in total agreement. When I was in HS 1972-1976 I ran track and Cross Country. Steve inspired me watched the 72 Olympics and felt so bad. Then came May 30, 1975 so sad. In 1995 I flew out to Oregon for the meet in Eugene. On May 30, 1995 I went to the Coos Bay Chamber of Commerce and asked for the location of Steve’s grave? They didn’t know but a very nice lady directed me to a small either law or real estate agency. They told me a guy Steve went to Marshfield with worked there. Not trying to impose myself as a New Yorker I went to the office and explained who I was and why I stopped in. Cannot remember the gentlemen’s name but he identified himself as one of Steve’s classmates. He asked me if I knew what today was and I just said yes and that’s why I’m here to pay my respects. He said it’s lunchtime and I’m about to head out to the cemetery myself if you’d like to follow I’ll make sure I don’t loose you. We got to the cemetery in maybe 5 minutes and there were flowers from the Prefontaine family there. We both took a moment to say a prayer or two. Then I asked this gentleman to tell me something about Steve and he did that. What I’ve read and learned about Steve thru books and films was only confirmed by the great short story the gentleman told me. A memorable day for me nearly 30 years ago along with a story I’ll always cherish!🥰

      Yet someone else who 'believes' they would have been in the car that night. I can recall reading an interview which Lasse Viren did, and he claims he was glad that he missed the meet through being injured (a likely story. Probably scared of being thrashed in the race). But he also said he would likely have been in the car with Pre that fateful night. Don't they realise he was driving an MGB sports car, not a Station Wagon?

    • @gordons-alive4940
      @gordons-alive4940 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You think because he got the model of his car wrong, talking about him 50 years later, he was lying? Maybe he is, I don't know, but it's not hard to believe a friend would get a detail like that wrong, especially after so many years. I can't remember the model of car most of the people I knew drove back in the 80s or 90s. I don't find it hard to believe a good friend would misremember an MG MGB as a MG Midget. The two aren't that different.

    I vaulted with (against) Jan in High School. I was nowhere near as good. Watching him in 1968...it was obvious his career was going to the top. The Munich Pole Vault fiasco was a terrible, political moment. The first time an American did not win the Olympic Pole Vault. But, it got worse. The US basketball team (also never defeated for Gold in the Olympics) had its Gold ripped of by totally bogus officiating. Finally, the 1972 Munich Games was the site of one of the first highly visible, deadly Islamo-terrorist attacks. A group called "Black September" (PLO) killed and took Israeli athletes hostage before they were all killed at the Munich airport.

    I'm a year younger than Jan. I jumped on bamboo at home, steel, Swedish steel, and aluminum in junior high in the Phila area. I recall everything Jan is talking about here. As a senior, I got a Thermoflex (red pole) and a black Cata-pole to finish the season. Steel pole vaulting was sliding the bottom hand up and two legs swinging together from the ground up. Switching to fiberglass from a steel pole meant jumping the same way without sliding the hand up. Jan said a bamboo pole would bend a little. It will. I also jumped 11'3" on the Swedish steel pole, and it also flexed hard and fast, surprisingly, on that jump.

    I bought 8 poles last year for my beginners' program. 11' series 90,100,110,120,130 and 11'6, 130, 135, and 12' 140, and my three girls barely made it through the season on those poles. The first five were pre-owned, and the last three were new, all Essex. The total cost was $3000. I will need 10 more poles this year, at least just for the girls. My three boys graduated last year. One made the State Champs jumping 13'. This is an expensive sport, in which the clubs are keeping it going. Without them, there would be no pole vault. I hope to add a few poles to the lot, and we'll definitely rent again to fill in the gaps.
