The music and ministry of Second Presbyterian Church (Portsmouth, OH).
Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
Welcome to our 2024 Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols.
This fall and winter have been a little bit upside down for us at Second Pres (a boiler that wouldn't boil but has been resurrected in what surely is a Christmas miracle). And we are grateful to Cornerstone Church for hosting this service in their (warm) sanctuary - so if the scenery is not what you expected, that's why!
Many thanks to Jerry Martin for putting this edited video together - we appreciate both his technological knowledge and willingness to make this service available to those who weren't able to worship with us.
The bulletin listing all the lessons and carols is available here:
drive.google.com/file/d/10bsKKquZ7EtnzfulEtx_OmxAGpZB9ltW/view?usp=sharing
The bulletin also includes the list of all the musicians involved in this service and a handful of things coming up at Second Pres, including our 6 pm Christmas Eve service which will be live-streamed here on our channel on Tues, Dec 24.
Part of the service includes an invitation to support our special music program which makes special services like this possible.
Donations can be mailed to the church with special music or Lessons & Carols noted in the memo line. (Second Pres Church 801 Waller St Portsmouth, OH 45662).
Gifts can also be given by checking out our website: secondpres-portsmouth.org/giving.
(Our website has online giving through Vanco, or you can search for our PayPal Charity Profile and give that way.)

What fun! Thank you ALL!!
Congratulations to you all. That was fantastic evening (I wish I could have been there) and you've all worked so hard.
Thanks so much for watching! Maybe next year ...
Really enjoying this. Aaron's improvisations are brilliant!
Jerry's playing is as inspirational as ever, and the dancers certainly add something!
@@beautyinsound Thanks for watching!
@@beautyinsound Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it - we had a blast!

We agree!!
Beautiful service, beautifully played, beautifully sung ❤
Thank you Ru!!
Thank you so much!
Jonathan Burton is a wonderful tenor! I try to go hear him whenever I can.
Stop calling your Presbyterian CULT a church because that’s blasphemy! Only Jesus can found a Church
Thank you for today's service. Wonderful to listen to Jerry playing the organ!! Hope your throat recovers soon Pastor. Blessings from New Zealand 🇳🇿. 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for tuning in! And I feel OK, which is weird, but my voice does sound a little better today!
Great playing from all the musicians. After watching all videos of this organ to date I am always amazed at it's versatility and ability to play all the literature to best effect.
Your and Mr. Martin's virtuosity in these videos is much appreciated. I will make a point to visit in person when the opportunity presents itself.
We'd love to have you with us.
A superlative instrument.
Thank you!
This is fast becoming one of TH-cam’s most well-known organs!
It's quite unexpected! And delightful to watch unfold. :-)
It's an absolute gem.
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for worshiping with us!
Can’t wait!👍
Looking forward to this. Blessings from New Zealand
Many, many thanks for this splendid 'Thanksgiving Organ Concert and Hymn Sing' - a truly fitting spiritual and ceremonial way in which to celebrate the revitalised 'Ma Kilgen Organ' at the Second Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth Ohio. As Dr Workman mentions in his address, organs are very complex musical instruments to maintain and the specialised attention they require over the years to keep them in good working order is expensive and often beyond the means of increasing numbers of congregations. To have a church community and some special and very generous individuals who are dedicated to the conservation of such a marvellous organ is a real blessing for the church and you are all to be commended for valuing the historical legacy of music-making in worship. It was a splendid programme and the playing of Dr Martin and the playing (and singing!) of Dr Workman was FABULOUS. Bravo, one and all!
Thanks so much for all these kinds and generous words! We are indeed blessed in this little river town in southern OH. It gives us great hope for the world!
perfeito
Thank you so much!

My that was fun to watch/hear this morning in Devon, England. I also found it fascinating to hear the all different pieces inspired by the hymns. Obviously not an easy task for composers as to 'so.....where exactly shall I start with this?' It was also very noticeable the many more colour variations now available to the players as a result of the updated combination software. In this respect the sounds of MaKilgen are many, especially the renewed use of the lovely chimes. Well done to those involved in this Thanksgiving Organ Concert.
We are thrilled with the renovations and upgrades - many more years of music to come! Thank you so much for watching!
Absolutely wonderful celebration of Ma Killen. What talent. Congratulations to all involved. Blessings from New Zealand 🇳🇿. 🙏🙏
Thanks, Dianne! :-)
What a tremendous celebration of the organ! I’m honored that my music could be part of it. 🎶😊🎶
YES - thank you so much for your contribution!!

What fun. Very enjoyable. Thank you to you all!
We had a blast putting it on! Can't believe we pulled together 25 performers in a relatively short span of time to make this happen! This is an amazing community of performers and musicians.
¡Bravo! The most original organ concert¡
Thank you so much! They did a great job picking a wide variety of songs - a little something for everyone! :-)
Great job Jerry! Also, I love the Dracula voice!
Thanks for tuning in! We're getting great feedback about "Pa Kilgen" - who read a script with the musical introductions but improv'ed the rest in the moment!!
What a fabulous concert: bravo! The Second Presbyterian Church Portsmouth, Ohio, is certainly blessed with very talented musicians and dancers who provided an evening of wonderful entertainment. This spooktacular event was certainly spectacular . . . and the commentary added an inspirational element of real fun! Many congratulations to all who contributed - your talents are very much appreciated.
Thank you so much! This little, old rusted-out river town is a treasure trove of artistic gems, that's for sure!
Great concert!
Thank you for watching! We appreciate!
Great fun throughout. Loving the timing of the train horn in Alison’s speech and the haunting commentary from Pa-Kilgen and of course all the musicians and dancers.
