Great to hear it from witness. As radar tech in that career field (1980-2000) I was always very interested in the story. Thanks

Jacques Bullard was french "par le sang versé" he was a volunteer in French foreign Legion in 1914 and wounded in action in 1916... In French Foreign Legion any soldier who is wounded during a battle for France can immediately apply to be a French citizen under a provision known as "Français par le sang versé" ("French by spilled blood"). In 1916 he was a French citizen ... After recovering, he volunteered on October 2, 1916, for the French Air Service (French: Aéronautique Militaire) as an air gunner. He was accepted and underwent training at the Aerial Gunnery School in Cazaux, Gironde. Following this, he went through his initial flight training at Châteauroux and Avord, and received pilot's license number 6950 from the Aéro-Club de France on May 5, 1917. Bullard received 14 decorations and medals from the government of France. In 1954, the French government invited Bullard to Paris to be one of the three men chosen to rekindle the everlasting flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe. In 1959, he was made a Chevalier (Knight) of the Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle, who called Bullard a "véritable héros français" ("true French hero"). He also was awarded the Médaille militaire, another high military distinction. Bullard est un de mes compatriotes et j'en suis très fier en temps que Français.

It is pronounced Care-oh, the town I live in now. His image and a bit of his story is emblazoned on the side of my local American Legion Hall, just a few blocks from where I live and where he grew up! Kind of cool to have a local hero.

Then- Captains Panza and Cayler were true heroes in rescuing the surviving technicians from that mountain, as were the Air America crews.
