Late-July RTA. 2.7kt flood to 1.8kt ebb. Slack at noon forced us to start as the winds were already building. It was a hard slog to round the island, and no easier for the return leg.

The Dolphin & South End Clubs have a rich history of rowing and racing four seat rowing boats. We're working to reintroduce this type of team rowing into our rowing programs, but we're going to need a bigger boat. We need to raise another $10k towards a new coastal quad. The new boat will be more beginner friendly than our current quad, and will open the door to creating a rowing circuit amongs...

      Apparently you know very little about sailboats. The Cal 20 does not have traditional graceful lines - but in terms of function it is an excellent design. Durable , fast , forgiving, and really likes to be pushed hard. Remarkably seaworthy as well. When getting caught out in heavy weather I felt as secure on my Cal 20 as I did on boats of twice the displacement.

    New to the wholesaling thing but I have a question Is the bow supposed to be that low a couple times it looked dangerously low Is that a ballast thing or is that the way this thing was designed cuz you just wait for it to nose into a wave and cause problems Please someone educate me

    • @dimitrikemitsky
      @dimitrikemitsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Short answer is yes, the bow is supposed to be that low in that situation, or at least it's not terrible. But also yes they could take some water over the bow, but also the worst that will generally cause is getting you wet in this situation. Longer answer, small sailboats like the Cal don't really have ballast in the traditional sense of a tank or shiftable weight that can go fore or aft etc. The Cals (and most sailboats) have a weighted keel that weighs like 500+ pounds, in the case of a Cal 20, like 1000 pounds probably. The effect of this is that they actually have a lot of inertia and weight low down, so even if they nose deep into the water, it's nearly impossible to tip them forward like you see in some racing boats or little dinghys without a weighted keel. So the boat isn't in any mortal danger (although you definitely would want lifelines and life jackets, which it looks like they have). As to WHY the bow is so low, it's sailing directly downwind, with the sails set "wing on wing," meaning each the sails are spread to either side like a bird spreading its wings, catching the wind from almost directly behind. Notice the mainsail is actually wide out to the left and the headsail is out to the right. Because the mast is stepped forward and the sails are out wide, the wind pushing those sails exerts both a forward and rotational force. Best bet in this case would be to get everyone aft and try to counter the force, keep the bow up. But assuming everything else is squared away, worst case you stuff the bow, get a bit wet, lose a lot of speed, and look a bit foolish. Generally speaking, sailboats are pretty tough and pretty forgiving, unless you're into super high performance racing boats and stuff.

    • @wallace-bv4rl
      @wallace-bv4rl ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed both and my knowledge is less than the initial answer but I was thinking as viewing that overall bodies could be further back. Even if not as dramatic (as in a pure racer) a nose dive probably wouldn’t be fun

      @@dimitrikemitsky Great answer. I have a Cal 14 which is an Australian only version designed by Hood. It looks identical to this and has about 160 kg of lead ballast.

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dimitrikemitsky Good explanation. The wind is trying to tip the boat down in front because of the high load at the top of the sails. But, no problem in a Cal20. Just scoot everyone aft to get the chin up, and that boat will go like a rocket. I almost bought one years ago. But got a Chrysler 20 instead for more room in the cabin and ahuge cockpit. Al ot heavier and not as fast, but very sturdy boat.

    随分前に、日本ではオートバイで有名な「ヤマハ」がプロダクション契約を取って、「ヤマハ20」として販売してましたね。ヤマハは最後、MUM30のライセンスも取得するのですが、その後日本の景気後退により、セーリング事業から撤退してしまいました。まあ、ちょっと反発していた自分もいますけどね、なんでヤマハ?ってな感じで。ほぼ、無意味な反発ですけど。

    Yeah. There are so many people surfing and it's so crowded everywhere, there are so few places left to surf waves with less crowds. This place gets super crowded nowadays anyway, but please don't blow it up on the internet like this. That's why you're getting downvotes and comments. All you have to do is change the title and trim the end Really not cool to give not only the name of the break, but specific locations. Please be cool, you got to surf there, don't blow it up for everyone else. Thanks
