Intel is still struggling, Pat has been there over 3 years and not much has improved. 5 node in 4 years is just talk, it is really like 3 nodes in 4 years, if NA18 works out next year which is not a sure thing. They have been playing with the same Alder lake for 3 years now. On the server side, where the money is, they have been losing to AMD for over 5 years and they haven't been able to respond to Threadripper!! On the GPU or AI or vector side, nothing seems to be happening. Their stock is not doing great either. On the foundry side? who is using them? Intel is using TSMC. Talk only goes so far, before it actually discredits you.

At 36:00 I think you are right. The British had better technology then us but we copied and leapfrogged them by the end of WW1. Why can't China do the same to us? This neverending innovation isn't enough it must be at a faster rate then China catching up, combined with 4x our population. Suppose if everything is automated and we have AGI then we can render their population advantage useless. But it seems like Star Trek fantasy.

I enjoyed watching this video very much. I was at Intel from the summer of 1980 until the late spring of 1986. I'd been the last member added to the team that created the 8086 Pascal compiler with John Crawford. Afterwards I went on to work on the software debug support for the 8086, but was included in some of the deliberations regarding architecture issues with the 386 and other potential microprocessors. It was nice to hear John mention the debug support in the 386, because that was one area where I was more closely involved. It was also nice that John's guitar playing was mentioned. I don't know when I saw or heard him play, but I remember it well. Again, thank you. This video brought back fond memories.

Is it not true that the Space shuttle used 386 architecture many years after it became outdated? This was due to the reliability of the architecture, something that has never been equalled. The engineering principles have stood the test of time. One thing is for sure I would not want to be on a space flight with Apple microprocessors running the show.

What a great discussion!! I’m particularly impressed how the three men remember those days in 1971 like it was yesterday in vivid detail. And I’m so happy that Intel CEO, Pat, took time to offer his perspective for the occasion as well.
