Repair test video to Taito Lunar Rescue PCB. Note the sound board fitted to this set is from Space Invaders, so whilst the game will still work, the sounds are all incorrect.

Repair test video to Sega Turbo PCB Set. Few things to note - there was no sound board sent in with this, hence the silent gameplay. Also, the SYNC signal from these boards, and similar VCO type such as Buck Rogers tends to annoy these Sony CRT monitors, and gives a very washed out picture. I don't get any picture at all on my LCD test monitor. It's just the way these boards are. The SYNC and R...

From the WDC web site: W65C22S/W65C22N Differences The W65C22S is lower power, faster and direct drive outputs with no current limiting resistors on outputs ports. The W65C22N is plug replacement of NMOS 6522 devices with current limiting resistors on output ports. The W65C22N does not have bus holding devices on the input, IO pins. The W65C22N IRQB is an open drain output that CAN be Wire-ORd, unlike the totem-pole output of the W65C22S (some customers have had to use a diode in series with the IRQB output when using the W65C22S in their systems that had Wire-ORd interrupts). The last point with the IRQ will be a problem. And the secoond to last may imply that there will need to be pullup resistors for the user port.
Very interesting! It's not like the other Rockwell VIA replacements where a diode is needed on the IRQ pin? I think in that case it was due to the IRQ being open collector output.
"The W65C22N and older NMOS and CMOS IRQB output is/was open drain pull down only. The W65C22S IRQB should be logically ORed to reduce power and increase speed or wired ORed with other devices using a diode that is forward biased when IRQB is low"
... yes, I need to clean my screen! 🤣
Old enough to remember this game. I was 5 when I saw "Pong", my cousin was the first person to get one in the family, everyone got one right after and everyone ruined their T.V.s because of it. My dad left the game on all weekend when we were gone and the TV never worked the same after... lol. I think it burned the images of the game on the screen...
Wow - great work and so good to see and hear it working again!
1:34 - I was in Blackpool one time in the 90s and indoors on one of the piers and that distinctive sound met my ears - had been many many years since I had last heard it.
Good to see it working. My first ever play on a video game was Asteroids and Defender back in 81 on a ferry voyage from Melbourne to Tasmania. My father actually supplied the coins which was something he wouldn't normally do, but we were on holiday.
Looks and sounds great.
One question, do you know where to get the ROMs for the Super Hang On memory test? I know there is one for Outrun, but I don't know if there is one for Super Hang On.
Amazing work!!
lovely video. you seem to be a prof at the game, keep it up man <3
Most of the sounds are correct to me 😊
They are different if you compare them to other gameplay videos of the actual machine, but this is still perfectly playable.
Brave man taking this on without the centre base, it fires a lot quicker than the left/right ones.
Hehe yes, I need to get myself a 3 button mouse at some point!
thanx for this share
Well done on getting this running, this is one of my favourite arcade games, back in the day I was given the arcade , it had stood outside for a while and showed a screen of corrupted graphics, back then I knew nobody that could fix it, no internet then to look for someone, so the whole cabinet got smashed up... Sad day.. thanks for sharing..
If any custom PCBs can help for future upgrade work? We're open to sponsor! (PCBWay zoey)
Hey Buddy your Vid is veeping at 16 - 19 kHz. im pretty young and cant watch this :(
I like to two Ram idea. I’ll use that in future
Really nice quick way of working it out =D
I have an Acorn A3000. All working OK. I don`t like to use it just in case it blows up. :) And I do not use the original monitor at all. I don`t think they make parts for them anymore.
They do still make some parts, but not all, and getting them can be problematic. It's actually easier to get bits for the earlier 8 bit machines, as the Arcs started using a lot of SMT custom ICs which have long since been discontinued. The monitors are the same, although if it's a CUB, then you can still get a lot of the bits for those. The biggest killer of the A3000, and all subsequent Arcs is the Varta battery on the main board. If you've not changed it, then you need to sort that sooner rather than later, or it will eat the machine from the inside.
@@RetroClinic I did change the CMOS battery a while back. Got a good one that`s off the board. It did have some damage and I had to replace the CMOS (clock) chip to get it to boot ok. It was stored in a shed attic for over 10 years in all whether conditions. The 3 button mouse has some mouse bites in the cable. :)
i've posted previously on another of your videos but it would be great if you could post more videos like this, I understand your channel is probably just to communicate with your customers but I find your repairs fascinating due to them sorta being in my "age" group ( I'm 54 so home console / computers are Acetronic , intellivision, Dragon 32, C64 , BBC B then Amiga etc ) , most of the hardware you repair is my youth, battle zone, space invaders, defender, donkey kong , pacman etc right up to outrunners, hard driving, virtua racing , galaxy force II etc, but would like to know your methodology or your diagnostic procedure on how you fault find for example an outrun pcb etc..
Hi. Thanks, and I'll try! I'm not really very good at making these, unlike some channels that have multiple cameras and editing software etc., there's just me here holding an iPhone, and the occasional use of a tripod. This channel is mainly for showing completed repairs to customers, but I would like to expand it if I ever get the free time. I did this one in particular as I saw another person on the BBC Facebook group had a similar issue, so I thought it would help.
noice
That`s the exact same fault with my Master
Well done Mark
Great job again!!! I noticed the explosion sound seems to split into 2 parts when you die - is that right?
Yes, it happens on colour board sets as the system changes from the all red screen back to colour. It’s just the way they are.
You always do an 11/10 job on these arcade boards! So much nostalgia for Outrun and some of the other games on that same hardware!
hi mark, you mention the service including the timing xtal and the 74ls245, is there a reason you change these as part of a service?
Yes, the crystal fitted is a more accurate one, to make the timing more stable for modern displays and converters. IC14, the 74LS245 is changed as a matter of course, as it's one of the known common failure points. It was known to be an issue by Acorn back in the day, which is why some Issue 4, and all Issue 7 have them fitted in sockets for easy change out.
Great! 🎶 🎵 ❤️
Hi mate. I have a few Jamma PCB's that need repairing. Where abouts are you based and how much do you charge?
Excuse my ‘old brain’ forgetfulness but does the Cub have built in speakers? 1984 is a long time ago and I can’t remember if the one we had in primary school had built in speakers or external ones.
It depends on the model, you could buy them with and without internal audio.
Awesome work!😎😎
This brings back so many memories from being an early teen playing Space Invaders at our local public pool with my friends. The friendly competitiveness we had, the laughs we shared, the cheers as we progressed through the game.. Thank you for posting this. I'd love to get my hands on a set of boards.
I've not seen this game before. Interesting idea for a game !
Where do you get those repair stickers?
They're done on a Brother PT-2420PC
Thanks Mark! 👾👾👾👾👾
What model is your colour monitor? Also, can you recommend a vector monitor for testing (not just a scope on X/Y)?
It's a Sony BVM1415P. Not sure on the vector monitor, one of the smaller ones out of an arcade cab I would presume. I've tested a few commercial XY monitors for computers and displays etc., and none have been fast enough, and none had RGB.
@@RetroClinic Thank you, I really appreciate the advice. Excellent work!
wow awesome! it's one of the few games that still give me the goosebumps, even after all these years
Loved that game, back when
racing perfection, this game will stand the test of time
Thats x,y mode? Does that work on a digital scope?
Yes, it's XY mode, also using the Z input via an interface circuit. Digital scopes don't render the picture anywhere near as clear unfortunately.
> Does that work on a digital scope? Sure, as it will likely have a x,y mode as well. But the display is using pixels and that makes it not anywhere as close to a vector display compared to an analog scope. (I believe it is "analogue" in case you're a Brit ;-) ).
Thanks so much! You da man :)
Asteroids being played on an oscilloscope will never not be amazing.
WTF IS YOUR PF PICTURE LMAO YOUR CHILD SIZE REAL DOLLS??? CHRIST ALIVE CHECK THIS MANS COMPUTER
Between Asteroids and Space Invaders, I must have spent about half my student grant in my first term at Uni. The other half. on booze. The other half I spent on food and rent, but that wasn't as important. It was always "the rock from behind" that got me on this game 😃
Will it Asteroids? Yes.
Oscilloscope vectrex.
very cool! would have liked to see a little more about your controller and how you interface to an oscilloscope and speaker though
Thanks. These vids are really just tests for customer repairs, so they can see their boards running. I hope to do more full rundowns on the supergun kit and games at some point.
This takes me back…Outrun is one of my top 3 favorite classic arcade games, fond memories 😏 Still, I never understood, even back in era. Why genuine arcade game circuit boards needed sooo many chips on them!? PS. All those vintage 80s era cars on the road, and that Testarossa convertible that never existed 😊
Great driving.
