Hi All, We know it's been a really long time since we last uploaded a video - it's been a busy couple months. We put together this quick sneak peek video of our latest trip out to the Alvord Desert in southeast Oregon. We'll have our next full video up in a week or so.
How we Installed a Victron Battery Monitor (BMV-712) in our Tab 400
มุมมอง 35K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Today I’m going over the install I did of a Victron Smart Battery Monitor (BMV-712) into our 2020 T@B 400 made by nuCamp. I’ll cover the reason why you want to upgrade the battery monitor from the stock one, how to install this Victron model (and how to configure it) and why I chose this specific one. Here are some links to the products I’m installing: Victron Battery Monitor with Temp Sensor: ...

Thank you! I really appreciated the explanation about battery types and full vs. discharged. I’ve always wondered about those lights and the “charged, good, low” values. I’m performing an upgrade to my 5er and will be installing the same BMV 712. A couple of notes…. One, the shunt has a specific lug that the negative connects to. Not just, “connect it to one end of the shunt”. It’s labeled on the shunt and it’s important you follow that designation. My second it that your awesome set up deserves the display! :). I think you should still mount it so you can refer to it on the fly instead of searching for your phone/iPad or whatever. Great video and thanks for publishing this!

Your video is excellent. Not too much tech gibberish but still explaining things that many people don't really understand. One thing I'd point out is that the battery comparison chart you created at ~4:30 (quite excellent by the way) showed the "resting state" charge for the batteries. When you are charging or draining the battery the voltage will rise or drop and no longer show the "resting state" charge. This explains how the 1970s era battery "gauge" was not entirely flawed, the Good and Fair might seem low for "resting" but considering it was usually being drained, and exhibiting voltage droop, it really wasn't (yet) damaged. The same not-resting-state problem exists when using any of the cigarette lighter style battery monitors you mentioned at 12:00. Yes they are more accurate than the 3 LED light monitor and they require the mental math each time you check, but unless you unplug or switch off EVERYthing for 15-30 min first you won't really get a useful result. Obviously this is why a shunt monitor is far better!

I have this monitor that I am going to be installing. A question o have is we are weekend campers . I would like to keep a charge on my batteries while is sits . What charge controller would you recommend? And what panel would you recommend. I have a 2021 Reflection with solar prewired. I don’t think I will need an inverter just to keep the batteries charged right . I will at a later time but for now just want to keep the batteries charged . Thanks

If you leave your BMV-712 under your bed where it isn't readily visible what do you do when you're boondocking and your WI-FI isn't connecting? My TAB has a MPPT 75/15 solar charge controller under the bed which is blue tooth compatible and it appears to have the same functionality as the BMV-712, which I would like to purchase and display for all those times the WI-FI isn't working. Good data on the LED lights, which specify at what voltage the lights are illuminated and why they are basically worthless.

This was a great video. This was the best one I found. Monkeying around with electricity always scares me. Thank you, s-o-o-o much! I want to add that there are alternative ways to connect the Victron battery monitor to the batteries. I have a 2021 T@B 400 and the battery compartment is configured a bit differently than the one in this video. In my T@B 400 the distribution block is in a pretty tight, inconvenient place outside the battery compartment, so I did not want to fiddle with that. I made all of my battery-shunt connections inside the battery compartment before the battery wires exited the compartment and attached onto the distribution block in a separate adjacent compartment as was done in this video. This required an Auto Zone purchased 32" black/negative wire I used to connect the main negative battery post to the shunt block. Then the original existing black/negative wire (I had disconnected from the main black/negative post) was curled and attached to the other side of the shunt. Also, when I looked very carefully at the video at the 10:37 mark you can see at the topmost entry, the battery capacity = 224 Ah. I called the battery maker, Harris Battery company (800-367-7670, nice customer service lady) and got that verbally, before I noticed that in the video. I also verified this in the spec sheet PDF for the Harris AGM battery sent to me via email. You need that 224Ah (at least for this Harris AGM battery) number to set up the monitor. Again, thanks so much for the video. It was instructive and professional. I will look for others you made. Take care.

Your reply was helpful to me. I am also wanting to install the BMV 712 in a 2021 T@B 400 and was trying to figure out the best location for the shunt. Where did you locate the distribution block on the 2021?

If I understood correctly, all 3 ac vents are on the floor. The obvious, that cold air falls, so getting effective circulation would never happen. Your head sweets, your feet are cold. Kind of bass-ackwards. Best feature I see is not having the trap sink drain.

Thank you. Just installing this in my 2019 T@B 400. Now that "Travels with Delany" is no longer focused on the T@B, our community needs a new source for good instructional videos like this. I think you'd be a great person to provide that.

Great video, my husband and I are sold. We were wondering as someone else also asked in the comments below, “How do you store this trailer?” I’m assuming from your video you have it in a garage, when I read the specs on this it said it was over 8’ in height. Our garage is 8’ and we’d love to store it in our own garage instead of paying someone for storage. Thank you.

Checked number on our Harris batteries in 2020 T@B 400 Boondock Lite built in January, 2020. HBDAGMGC6-A. Is that same battery as yours? Are the configuration numbers above generated by the Victron or are they numbers supplied by Harris? Thank you!

Thanks for doing this Ben and Julie! Is the extra 12" battery cable and heat shrink tubing called for in Victron's installation instructions? Did you by any chance also take on the Fantastic Fan upgrade (7350 kit)? Can't tell from forum comments whether that's easier or tougher than the Victron BMV-712 installation.
