Fall Yard + Garden Tips
Fall is such a beautiful time of year. Chilly mornings, more and more color and a great time to be out in your yard. This is also an excellent time to do a little behind-the-scenes work to prepare for winter, and make some investments in an even lovelier spring.
- Take photos of your yard and garden to help with planning for next year. Use the winter to put together a plan to fill in empty areas, layer in blooms for every season and get help from your landscape designer (that's me!) when you need it.
- Make sure newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials are mulched properly with about three inches of mulch to cover the roots. Be careful to keep mulch away from the base of the trunk or branches to avoid rotting.
- Protect young trees from buck rub by wrapping them or covering trunks with mesh or scored plastic guards.
- Slow down watering, but continue checking on newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials through Thanksgiving.
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs. You always wish you had when they're popping up around the neighborhood, so try a mix of Snow Drops, Scilla siberica, Muscari, Narcissus and Allium (or one of your favorites), all tried-and-true perennials that also happen to be deer-resistant.
- Continue weeding and editing on the warm, sunny days of October and November to prevent weeds from spreading seed for spring.
- Consider mulch-mowing your leaves to mound in your perennial garden. They break down to provide valuable nutrients, prevent weeds and protect plant roots from the cold.

Thank you!
Veey pretty❤
thank you!
👌👌👌👌👌👌
Great container! Just some feedback, I think it would be a lot better if you would've shown the front while you were planting. I get that it's not that easy to do but either putting a camera behind you or standing "behind" the front would be a lot better in my opinion. Either way thanks for the video!
Love the feedback.. great points to consider and we agree. Thank you for your support.
Nice
Hello, kelly! Thanks for this video! Have you ever planted a hydrangea on a slope? Will it grow upwards, upright, after compensating for the slope? Or is it going to droop over down the incline and tip over if I don't assist it and growing upwards? It's not a huge incline. Maybe 35°
a mimir 😴
Hello: I totally agree with the comment below from @jonellen4614 !
Do you recommend cutting of the stem of the dead blooms or just pulling of the blooms? My mother bought me a plant from Bednars and I'm enjoying it. Thanks!
I have clay soil and I don’t want to do soil amendments I need easy tough perennials and I’m in zone 9b. I put in Yarrow and have Mexican petunias, and just put in coreopsis. I hate my zone 😂
💋 "Promosm"
How do you keep the deer out?! I cannot keep my hostas alive
I was so worried it was injured!
When Hummingbirds are puffy it usually shows that they are sleeping but yea they could be injured
She has my dream yard and gardens. So beautiful. Gives me hope! One of these days I hope to have Bednar's come and help me design my yard.
Thank you so much
I have a hydrangea sapling I guess it's a little starter looks like a twig what how do I care for it
I planted a hydrangea where a boxwood used to be. That boxwood was horrible! It got over pruned with too much dead centers. I well worked the ground and made sure no root pieces were in the ground. I'm guessing the boxwood may have robbed many of the nutrients from the ground. There was some brown dirt under there. What's a good fertilizer for fresh planted hydrangea? I have a 3 gallon size.
I have 3 impatiens here in the Philippines but I have also the regular impatiens...
Wonderful~謝謝~♡♡♡♡♡
the garden has nice plants and different colours of flowers i like it
I am retired, my wife and I get our plants and flowers there. I was wondering if I could get permission to fish at your ponds. Sweet 100s are delicious and so prolific. Your farm is first class...people go out of their way to help you there.
Is that Kent oregano edible? Or is it just ornamental?
Great video Russ
Beautiful array of plants with your spring annuals and some of your spring flowering shrubs and cherry trees. Where are you located and the winter hardiness growing zone in your location? If you could indicate the hardiness zones for the perennials, trees, bulbs and shrubs in your videos that would be most helpful for your viewers and potential customerrs. 🙂🤗 Thank you in advance. ☺
Hi Maureen, we are just southwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and are about a zone 5-6. Thank you for watching, and happy gardening!
Looking forward for this series to pick back up for Spring!
this is a fantastic gift idea! Question: does it matter how you layer them as far as knowing where the first layer of bulbs are and then alternating the next layer? (sorta thinking of numbers on a clock- would it matter if multiple bulbs are at 3o'clock?) Or do the bulbs just bloom and push through around the other layers
Dang he’s hot.
I really appreciate the videos. But as a professional artist I find them difficult to watch. Zooms too fast, the close-up doesn't reveal detail you want. Here is a website (I have NO financial interest in it) that may be able to help give you a better look to your presentations. learn@creativelive.com
Russ 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
One of your plants has a round brown spots with yellow halos. I have the same disease. Do you know what it is and how to treat it?
Thank you so much for this video. It is exactly what I was looking for. So many videos seem as though they just want to go on and on and on about unnecessary things. You were concise, thorough and easy to understand. Perfect!
I bought a hydrangea out of a catalog about 2 years ago. It is about 4 inches tall still. It's coming back but just doesn't seem to want to grow. Is there any thing I can do to kick it into gear?
Great info. But I order to plant how should we treat the soil? Where are you located?
Barbara Harrold I agree, I just received 2 potted hydrangeas and want to plant in my yard. They need some care and how to plant info would of been nice.
I was really looking forward to a demo of what you were discussing instead of just hearing an explanation. For someone unfamiliar with Pruning, watching it done properly with the audio explanation would be best.
Honey, you can find amazing pruning videos on youtube. I get all my flower information from youtube if I don't already know it. A young lady who does a great job is Garden Answer. Look her up on youtube and search her videos for pruning.
Thanks for the info Russ. Informative video!
yer so hawt
Gross. You need glasses.
He's not a bad lookin guy!
This is so helpful..thank you! So, do you recommend hydrangeas for shady areas as well? I have two plants that did not bloom at all this year. One is in more shade than sun.
