Resolve learning difficulties and reduce meltdowns by understanding the effect of primitive reflexes
Primitive reflexes are a necessary and normal part of infant development. They play a vital role in survival functions and pave the way to conscious actions and reactions. There is a beautiful sequential order to the different reflexes emerging and then integrating when no longer needed. Sometimes, reflexes do not integrate in the normal time-window that they should, or, they may re-emerge later in life. When this happens, their presence, as active pathways in the brain, can cause huge challenges in aspects such as learning, emotional maturity, and/ or coordination.
The earliest reflexes (Fear Paralysis Reflex, and Moro Reflex) are associated with alarm, and survival while later on the reflexes are associated more with coordination of body, eyes, emotional regulation, feeding, sensory processing, toilet training, reading, writing etc.
We explore the difference between the reaction from the Fear Paralysis Reflex and the Moro (startle) reflex, and discuss various sensory techniques sometimes necessary to gain trust, safety, and connection before venturing into specific movements and exercises.
Janet, who I'm talking with, has worked in child development for 40 years and pursued training in many of the main techniques and therapies related to touch and movement interventions to facilitate normal development. She has many tools in her tool box and melds all her acquired knowledge along with an appreciation of where the chid is at and what they are able to do.

Gut microbiome, toxicity and the autism connection. How to heal and seal the gut for better health.
มุมมอง 522 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this conversation we explore the link between the microbiome of the body and childhood diseases and disorders, in particular autism. Dr Campbell-McBride pieces together all the separate research findings around GI dysfunction, deficiencies, toxicity, parasites, fussy eating, and food sensitivities, and can explain why they occur, through the common denominator of the gut flora. "Health all c...
Supported communication; a road to independent expression. Help to initiate and coordinate movement.
มุมมอง 545 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are many individuals who are trapped inside a body that can't coordinate in an easy voluntary way. Many report that they have the intellect and intention to do something but the body won't cooperate, or sometimes does something different to what they were intending. From this understanding, a number of teaching and communication methods have evolved with the emphasis and support at the ph...
Body coordination challenges in level 3 autism. The sensory-motor piece often missed. Dyspraxia/DCD.
มุมมอง 435 หลายเดือนก่อน
Many people who are non speaking autistic, or level 3 autistic, actually have severe Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) / dyspraxia, causing SIGNIFICANT challenges in the ability to express themselves, and be physically independent. Testing for motor impairments in this group is difficult as many standard tests aren't sensitive enough. Assumptions of low intelligence (not understanding)...
DCD and learning difficulties. How the sensory motor system affects academic ability and life skills
มุมมอง 2355 หลายเดือนก่อน
Talking with expert psychologist Dr Kamps about Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) / dyspraxia, we explore the correlation between evident challenges in planning and executing of motor tasks and the effect it has on an individual's ability to perform academically and express their intellect and creativity. As one of the founding fathers of psychology and education noted, "The sensori-mot...

Brilliant, thanks! I just discovered at 60 years old that i never crawled and only started walking at over 2 and a half years. Realisation of why Its been a battle to feel good about lifehat doesnt get easier with age Motor function and executive function intertwined keys to feeling of agency and confidence, spawning optimism and desire to action based on past success, opposed to feeling pessimistically uninclined to action based on past failure to execute. Its a dysthimic life existence. Sad to look back and understand I just, for whatever reason, got a bad early download of the praxis app!
