this is what i've been looking for thanks. ironically, the original pixelate effect in illustrator is useless.
Short and simple! Works like magic. If you pixelated something and want to delete the white background quickly - go to Select/Same/Fill Color. It will select all the white pixels. Make sure to select a white pixel first.

A tip that I took away for Freeform Gradients is to use a basic object for the gradient and use the main object as clipping mask. By this you can move gradient points out of the border of the main object.

pretty awesome tutorial, but something bothered me a lot here. you could have just selected " ignore white " in the image tracing section.
Great Point! The reason is, in "High Fidelity" Image Trace you first have to change the Method from Overlapping to Abutting to actually toggle the "Ignore White" option. To keep it simple, I used the Magic Wand approach. But yes you can also use "Ignore White" :)
