7 minute music
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ค. 2022
The concept of 7 minute music is based upon peoples ability to focus intensely for 7 minutes - any longer and the mind starts to wander. The brain needs time then to process what its just learnt. The idea that you can load these lessons into your brain and then allow your sub-conscious to process them is what is unique to this style. That doesn’t mean you don’t practice, rather you only take in new information in small doses.
On top of this is the concept that music needs freedom. This site has no strict order to progress. Things are set up in levels so you have an idea how advanced a lesson is, but you are free to bounce between different sections and skills that allow you to develop your own style. This is critical! We need new music, creativity and unique players. You might just want to do every level from start to finish or go all over the place. We have made some links between lessons but there is no right way to do this.

B.B. King Box - Guitar Lesson - Level 6
This is a bit misleading - you can learn this easily. But to use it well is much harder. This is a amazing little mini scale that B.B. King used to great effect. Not a scale so much as a whole step key change for many a beat or two, or maybe longer - it depends what the song needs. It is much more a feel kinda playing than technical skill and knowledge, but the knowledge helps.

False Harmonics - Guitar Lesson - Level 5
มุมมอง 164 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
False harmonics are a great way to get a finishing note or even a odd sounding run that you really can't hit with proper harmonics. They can be done a few different ways but the key is to get that crisp ringing sound. For more check out 7minutemusic.com
C Scale - D Position - Guitar Lesson - Level 4
มุมมอง 1849 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This lesson introduces the D position which only has one octave. It is really handy for linking up the E position to the C position. I will often use this as an extension of the 1st octave of the E position to replicate a riff in an octave higher as it has a very similar digital pattern (how your fingers are placed). This makes it easy to remember the shape rather than the notes of a riff. It i...
E7th Chords - Guitar Lesson - Level 4
มุมมอง 11212 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
These chords are some of my favourites and I use them all the time in both open chords and bar chords. Easy and effective with the ability to slip between different chords make these an essential lesson for any guitar player. E dominant 7th is a absolute classic too. Have fun with these! Polyrhythms - Guitar Lesson - Level 6
มุมมอง 9314 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Polyrhythms are hard. Like confusingly difficult and often totally unnecessary. Its one of those things that people do to sound technical and it works, but it doesn't necessarily sound good. You can get the balance right though and use polyrhythms as a little icing to add some colour to a track. And I do recommend doing this as a recording first before ripping it out live as there is a level of...
F Scale - C Position - Lydian mode - Guitar Lesson - Level 6
มุมมอง 7919 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This is a rather obscure scale but those are sometimes the best for coming up with new riffs and melodies. Focus on the interesting arpeggio for this scale as it has a sharp 4th that really sets things off. You can also try to create the sharp 4th version of a chord or two from this and mix up a few two note solos that can be interesting. Light and airy its great for a bit of a holiday from the...
Reverse Bend - Guitar Lesson - Level 5
มุมมอง 38วันที่ผ่านมา
A reverse bend seem like it should be really easy, but knowing how far to bend up to hit the right note without actually being able to hear it makes it way harder than a normal bend. What you need to do is practice a few times to really know the right amount of bend on the particular guitar you are playing. That said even a off pitch reverse bend still sounds pretty good so it is a very forgivi...
C Major Scale - A position - Guitar Lesson - Level 3
มุมมอง 315วันที่ผ่านมา
This video is a great start to the CAGED system which really shows you how to play a scale all over the fretboard. This systems is good up to a point and if you really get good with theory you will start to see the patterns that just exist everywhere - that's the goal not to learn all the scales ever but to be able to workout any scale anywhere. It does take some time though. For more checkout ...
Tapping - Guitar Lesson - Level 5
มุมมอง 18214 วันที่ผ่านมา
Tapping is one of those things that blows you away at first. But it can quickly become stale if you only use it in the same way each time. I once knew an absolute master of this so I must let you know I am just a dabbler. Here is a taste and then there are far better people than me out there if you want to take it further. Time signature 5:4 - Guitar Lesson - Level 5
มุมมอง 5514 วันที่ผ่านมา
5:4 is one of those things that just confuses people and for good right. It just feels a bit wrong. That said it is an amazing way to make your songs a bit different if used well. If not... its pretty horrible. Try not to use it just for the sake of it. Look for a song that will get a great lift from using it. The trick to it is to count in 2's and 3's. 1, 2, 3, 1, 2; 1, 2, 3, 1, 2. For more ch...
C Scale - G Position - 2 Octave - Guitar Lesson - Level 5
มุมมอง 19714 วันที่ผ่านมา
With the 2 octave scales comes some amazing arpeggios. The G position scale covers the full 6 strings with a huge array of options for lead and melody writing. Being able to drop between the positions becomes critical too. Try going from the E position to the G position and see how your lead changes - its subtle but that's what makes that bit of difference in your songs. certain notes become ea...
D9th Chords - Guitar Lesson - Level 5
มุมมอง 12614 วันที่ผ่านมา
D sus 9 is probably one of the most overused chords of all time right next to D sus 4. That said its pretty damn easy to add a little flair to your playing and get some nice melody whilst still playing rhythm. There is more to this lesson though that looks at the other add versions and lets you experiment more with your sound. For more check out 7minutemusic.com
Modal patterns - Guitar Lesson - Level 6
มุมมอง 14314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Modal patterns are a sort of short hand for musicians to use the modes in any key. So the II, V, I pattern would have the same intervals in every key even though it uses different notes. It feels the same. Now the combination of these patterns is a great way to just jam with anyone once you know it - and not just guitar. This is most commonly used in Jazz but is such a great tool that I recomme...
Bar Chord - G Position - Guitar Lesson - Level 6
มุมมอง 13721 วันที่ผ่านมา
This bar chord is a real stretch. Its basically so hard that its fairly useless... Unless you split it in two! This is really great for recording where you want to really control the voicing of your chords. Even layering it together is pretty cool. Try it out and then see where it can work for you. For more check out 7minutemusic.com
Am Scale - C Position - Guitar Lesson - Level 4
มุมมอง 25621 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is a great minor scale to slip out when you are just looking to add something to a C position chord. And the runs and solos take a slightly different feel due to the different positioning of your fingers. You can really use it for riff writing to if you a playing with a ascending or descending run between chords too. For more check out 7minutemusic.com

So much hissing in your microphone while speaking. I can't watch.. may be why no one watches..
Sorry about that. I normally have a desser running over the audio.
Thank you from Canada. I will try this for sure.
Your welcome.
❤ wow but what does the E position mean here ? The caption is confusing for me can u pls elaborate
So the E position refers to the open chord that comes from the scale. People often use the CAGED system to describe different positions on the fret board. Each position sits in a different place on the guitar neck but is still the same notes (same scale). So once you know the C, A, G, E, and D positions you know that scale anywhere on the guitar. And if you are playing in the E position your bar chord will look like an open E chord. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
I have just added a video that brings it back to the start - th-cam.com/video/j-zCax0dzSc/w-d-xo.html
Came for the D9th chords, stayed for your voice. You could sell the phone book of London as an audiobook, and it would be a bestselling banger!
Hmm.... maybe a new project!
Your insights are really great. Thank you so much for your videos I fully intend to watch them all 😊☀️🕊️
You are welcome. I still have about 100 more to put up. They are all from my website that has unfortunately been buried in googles search. I will likely release them free there next year.
Made a song from them " Aallelujah"
What are the mathematical probabilities, that, at some stage, we both renamed the C major chord, to the C of a chord, because it made us forget to breathe, call the guitar names and, wear an infinity mark into the lino on the kitchen floor, with your mind screaming, WHY? I spent a month playing the C major scale and still couldn't play the chord right. I actually thought there was something wrong with me at one stage.
I hate that it is used in so many songs and its just like oh change to this chord in split second.... horrible horrible people why! I still don't use it much - have a look for the C7th lesson - C maj 7 should be the new C - way better version. We can start a petition to change all songs using C!
subbed check my stuff one day

Who would've guessed that I would finally be understanding this 7/8 business from the main man himself Ricky Gervais! Thanks bruv!

Just wanted to comment that I really like the idea behind your 7 minute concept. It makes a lot of sense and I’m looking forward to going through your videos! Thank you for posting so many!
Thanks. Its great as you start to link lessons together and come up with new ways of playing - i still do it as i go back through them.
Great! It sounds a little Major, that first one… thanks
It actually goes great with some blues in Em too.
Nice one man
Cheers.
On god bro youd eserve million subscribers. I wouldnt of learn guitar without you!
this channel idea is dope
Cheers!
Fantastic lesson thanks
You are welcome
Sir ekdam best video, Thank you very much.

Death and Slayer are one of the very few musicians that use fifths to harmonize their riff and lick.
It was actually South of Heaven that prompted me to add this in!
Much love from Southeast Ohio. Let's win this before we are all dancing at the end of a rope with no music...
Cheers from Australia!
Thank you for sharing. Greetings from France.
You are welcome. Enjoy.
great that you explain this for us!
Glad it was helpful!
You make it sound very difficult!
The chords are easy but the theory can be tricky.
Greetings man. Cool lesson. You sound a lot like the guy who does Tecmath.
Ha ha. I do sound a lot like him - I teach maths too.
I like your set up. I can see everything cleanly. Thank you!
Thank you for that! I have never been quite sure if it was good format or not.
I just found this channel and I love your style of teaching. I'm a beginner so I'll go back to the start and see where I can get. Thanks a lot from the UK.
Thanks heaps. Check out the website - the early stuff is all unlocked and has backing tracks to practise with. Cheers. 7minutemusic.com
I did and it looks perfect for me. I'll work through the first 2 parts and hopefully 'join' after that. Thanks again.
yes i learn a lot xx
You are welcome.
Badass bro I really needed this!
Thanks heaps.
thank you sir your lessons are ver y helpfull
You are welcome.
You mean a pre bend?
Yes same thing - it's the reverse action of a bend (descending portamento is the classical term)
I can play a few amazing solos, then I might mess up triplets. I need to work on those.
Triplets are really hard, especially when jamming or playing live. I mainly use 3:4 for rhythm.
i always take an hour or so an work on basics every week. It cannot be worked on too much.
Absolutely, all my lessons are on skills rather than songs - get the skills you can play anything.
Also check the reference song in the description - the solo is in 3:4.
i i dont know this, so thank you
Your welcome!
Again,thanks

Awesome!
Sorry my fat finger hit the thumbs down. I’d like to know your name. I’m a newbie to music and learning guitar, I’m 59 and I find your teaching, very very good and helpful. Thank you so much for making these lessons calm and basic for beginners like me. There are so many highly strung, Do this & do that and in five easy lessons I’ll unlock this guitar fretboard and you’ll be blah blah blah. So really I do appreciate these lessons and I would like to know your name. I’m Rob. Cheer’s keep up the excellent tutorage 👍
Hi I'm Steve Smythe. Thanks so much for the comment. I was really trying to make a course that avoids all the 'just do this and you'll be a master' stuff. There is a trick all good musicians know. Learn your scales and practice a lot!
@@7minutemusic Ha ha yes i think that the success in life is hard work and if at first !!! Thanks for taking the time to reply and thanks again for your efforts on TH-cam.
The thumb too high .
Sorry, the short cuts out the explanation for that from the full video - the thumb wrapped around is used for muting the top string so you can strum with a bit more energy (not having to skip the top string). Thanks for pointing it out.
Great re-imagination of a classic run used by legends from Beatles to Neil Young, great vocal melody line, I'd love to see a bridge with a big mother of power chord maybe F#/something or other... hang on are we song writing here? Awesome job Steve, great to see you're gift of inspiring & teaching is still shining bright!!
Cheers John. Will be getting in the studio with it soon. More to come!
Thanks for your help, regards from Scottish Highlands.
No problem.
Really nice lesson, I never knew anything about the Phrygian mode.
Thanks. If your interested have a look at what's available in the full program - 7minutemusic.com. There is a massive section on different scales there.
@@7minutemusic Thank you for the suggestion but I hardly play anymore I just like to watch TH-cam video.
thank you! happy new year from nyc! Im a teacher and never ever taught or played modes but play this lesson you taught all the time.....just didnt know was called a frigian!
Thanks Chris and a happy new year to you too. I love the scale. There is an even better one called Phrygian Dominant. I have a lesson on my website - 7minutemusic.com under scales. Let me know if you want me to send you a fretboard map of it.
@@7minutemusic just discovered u..I teach my students fun and complex chet atkins stuff and some van halen! etc. where are u located...and did you learn all the modes individually like the different colors they produce??
I am in Adelaide Australia. I learnt the modes through a teacher who worked with me that was jazz trained. We had a Diploma of music we ran that went through each mode in every CAGED position in different keys. It was awesome. We then set the students free to write their own music in any genre. It was amazing. The course I have up on the website reflects the order we learnt them in. Am and C major. Then G dominant, D Dorian. Then Phrygian, Lydian, Locrian. The number of flats/ sharps are what tells you the colour of the mode - so Locrian has 5 flats compared to the major scale if you play both in C and is wildly different whereas the Dominant only has 1 flat and is pretty easy to get a feel for. The Circle of 5ths is super handy for this. I'll find the link for one I made and add it here.
This will help with what mode is fitting in each key. 7minutemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Circle-of-4ths-poster-scaled.jpg . For C Major - the note to the right is Lydian, left is Mixolydian. The Note below is Aeolian (minor). To the right is Dorian, to the left is Phrygian. Left of Phrygian is Locrian. The best way to look at it is the left is dark and the right is light - play them and you will see what I mean.
@@7minutemusic THANK U I APPRECIATE U!
I just came across you channel and really enjoy your clear instruction, many thanks to you
Thanks. Have a look at the website too - it has chord charts and backing tracks for each lesson. 7minutemusic.com. Glad you like it.
Great lesson 🙏😊
Glad you liked it
Nice video!
Thanks! If you like that I have just put a new one up on moving open chords - th-cam.com/video/DJnExC9ljKE/w-d-xo.html
Confused about anything else on guitar? Drop a comment and we can help.
Excelente, gracias
Good video... dunno why I was expecting you to talk about quartertone (24edo) guitar 😂😂😂 I've consumed too much microtonal music
Cheers! Yeah that stuff might go in a level 7! I have mucked around with some quarter step stuff when playing in a belly dancing troupe (best job ever). I haven't included it in my course yet as thought it was a bit eclectic. I'll toss in some geomusic and planetary frequencies tuning and we can go off the deep end. Just getting the beginner stuff up for now.
