    Wonderful to see this. I love the laser cut title. I am confused though on how the saw was used at 1:00 translates to holes for the sewing?

    • @benedicthutchinson
      @benedicthutchinson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The saw is simply to make holes in the folded sections to make sewing easier. I could have used an awl to punch a hole but I would have had to open each section individually to do it from the inside, ant this would have been time consuming. I used a gents saw as the blade is very thin ant the teeth ver fine.

    Hello! I'm wondering, how many folded papers did you put together in a signature, and what weight is your paper? (I'm trying to figure out if I should put two or four papers together with a paper of 130 g)

    • @benedicthutchinson
      @benedicthutchinson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lisa. Each signature is 12pages. If i remember correctly it was SRA2 folded in a Z and then half. The paper was 170g symbol tatimi, white. Hope this helps.

    Such an amazing experience to see all the work involved. Thank you so much for documenting this. I feel like I'd need a video on the sewing process alone!

    Great Work ! I have some questions about making book cloth. What type of paper which you use for lining linen and how many gsm is it? What type of glue between linen & paper ? Do you put paste on both the fabric and the paper? If so, why in both? Thank you

    • @benedicthutchinson
      @benedicthutchinson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Tritonios. The backing paper is a Kadi Thai Mulberry 30GSM www.khadi.com/shop/thai-mulberry-30gsm/ . This was not ideal as it is hand made and has occasional flaws in it. You want a thin strong tissue like paper - have a look for kozo or similar papers. The glue is Methylcellulose (basically wallpaper paste) with water and a small amount of archival PVA (mixed 1:8:2 MC, Water, PVA). Gluing the Linen on the backing paper was the most challenging part of the whole book making process. The Linen is highly water absorbent and any excess glue soaks through the back of the linen and stains the front. This means you cannot past the glue on back of the linen, however it needs the moisture of the glue to stretch it and make it tacky. If you just put the glue on the paper the linen will not stick properly and will wrinkle up with the moisture. In order to apply a thin and consistent layer of glue to the linen i found it best to paste a layer on to ta flat surface then lay the linen on top - thus transferring a thin layer of glue to the linen. Hope this is of some help to you.

    So awesome. Just wondering, what method did you apply to print the photos?

    • @benedicthutchinson

      Hello and Thanks, DJ 7PLY, The flat sheets were digitally printed on an HP Indigo12000 press with HD print heads by Pureprint in Uckfield, UK. I needed a high end digital press that would handle B2 paper. Very few companies have a press of this spec. If I had printed on SRA2 or SRA3 it would have wasted a lot of paper and press time. All money I didn't have for the project. The paper was Symbol Tatimi White 170gms (SRA1 Sheets trimmed to B2+). You can contact me through my website if you need more information. hutchinson.work

      Benedict Hutchinson wow thanks for the detailed response! I’m currently looking for the best solution for a matte finish. I tried making dummy’s with a laser printer but I don’t like how the black isn’t flat
