Mean Mary plays an open back Deering Goodtime and she can bring it
Thanks for sharing this
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
I want to learn Autumn Beds by modest mouse what kinda banjo should i buy?
My man did not play a single note
Fair point! This is the very first lesson in our beginner skills course, so it literally is just how to hold the banjo to have a solid and correct foundation. If you want to hear John fly, and he does, check out this: th-cam.com/video/Xx23cfCmF4U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-2EjAWZYNKHvmx6e
I love that thin sound. What kind of banjo/strings are you using?
Thanks! Deering Medium and Deering Light, typically. Happy pickin'!
5*****'s, thank you.
Thank you! I've bought my first banjo and have been looking at instructional videos for a week, and practising right hand technique to play clawhammer... but nobody has explained up till now how to HOLD the instrument!!! I'll go back to the beginning and start with the hold. :)
Glad it was helpful!! We've got over 200+ lessons on our site should you want more formal help. Happy pickin'!
just the video i was looking for!

just the video i was looking for!
Glad it was helpful!
I don't even have a banjo but I find your videos so relaxing. You're like the bob ross of bluegrass. Great content (honestly I am inclined to learning this instrument, but clawhammer style if possible.)
Haha! Being called the Bob Ross of Bluegrass is a great compliment. Thank you! I'll pass this on to John.
Great album loving it.
i dont need an openback banjo i only remove the resonator on my deering calico or eagle 2 or goldtone ob300 if i feel i wont the open back sound and its great
Nice. Good info.
Glad you think so!
I’ve played banjo for over 3 years and never knew what a TB is for. Thank you
Bought a $150 Jameson. Turned it into open back with syngut strings, changed to old time tailpiece. Awesome light banjo with a very cool sound. Then got a Recording King BGM rkr30, bench model, frigging awesome machine! It's able to be open back, only once, big hassle. The banjo is designed to take apart and make it your own, watch some vids don't be afraid.
Don't try to complicate having fun jump in and play
If you’re seeing this in 2023 and you’re just starting out the deering is great but pricy get your self a gold tone ac-1 they’re plastic but comin in at $250 and that’s fairly good deal for a pretty good instrument.
Very helpful video!! I’m a long term closet player just starting to participate in jams - it’s been a challenge. The part of the video demonstrating chord inversions was quite interesting
Interested in lessons. Please. reach out. FYI: you spelled mountain wrong on your post. Great video.
Thank you for the compliment and for the FYI! Hate it when we make errors, particularly simple ones. 😭 Where did we misspell Mountain? We’ve got over 200 lessons on our site with both a bluegrass school and Clawhammer school. We also have a monthly practice competition for members where you can get feedback on your playing.
Thank you. You responded to a message a couple of months ago and had the misspelling
The other people in the house REALLY don't need to endure amplified, tortured twanging of a resonator-boosted banjo while I'm learning to pluck, so I just got the quieter open-backed. It's fine!
Open backs are great!! If a person does get a resonator to play in more jams you can always use a mute like Mikes Banjo Mute.
I’ve been picking the five since 1972 this helped me with some jamin
Glad to hear it!! Since ‘72 is impressive!!
Great interview. I’m looking forward to the album
She’s got two singles from the album out. You can find them on Apple Music or Spotify. Check out “Humming Mantra” and “Centering Mantra.”
There are times when I need to be inspired to pick . Man, hearing you pick inspired me . Thanks for sharing
Oh man. Thank you for that great compliment! We all need inspiration at times. Keep that picking up!
This 100 lb antifa guy is really good. I think a new genre was formed: red and bluegrass
Ha! John is not Antifa and he weighs at least a buck 40. See comments below about his shirt.
Nice shirt loser.
🤭 P r o m o s m
Thanks for showing this has always been my problem when I ask other musicians how they know when to change cords they would always say oh you’ll just know wha I don’t just know.
Glad it helped!
Confusing. At 2:50 you imply the resonator is also called a pot. Now I'm still learning (my first instrument arrives today) but from what I've already read and seen, the resonator and the pot are entirely different parts, the pot being the actual round body of the instrument to which a resonator can be fixed.
That's a great clarifying point! Sometimes the resonator is referred to as a bowl as it is in the shape of a bowl (or pot), but in this context referring to it as a pot could be confusing and is not accurate. Thanks for pointing that out!
I’ve recently got back into picking and I got a killer deal on a 1932 Gibson TB1 converted to a mastertone with a 5 sitting neck and it plays and sounds killer. Nice picking!
Wow! Trying not to be jealous as that's a beautiful banjo and not cheap!
What's your shirt mean?
It's the album cover of a punk band called Me Frist and The Gimme Gimme's John used to tour with when he toured with Old Man Markley.
@thebanjomountain Che G? Cross with cancel sign? You play banjo and hang out with whom I would assume are mostly Christian. Free country....but good taste goes a long way.
This is the band. They do spoof album covers. It’s not Che. music.apple.com/us/artist/me-first-and-the-gimme-gimmes/95123641
Who knew Woody Allen could play banjo!
I just decided to learn how to make sounds I find pleasing on a banjo today. I strung one up and put on a 'How To Tune Banjo' video. When the video was finished, autoplay put your video on.... I loved your playing Sir, well played Champ, you defo make that instrument sound gravy! I have played guitar with trad musicians many times here in Ireland over the years but I am on my first day, today, learning Banjo! Thanks for the music and peace from Ireland to you and yours mo chara. Go n-éirí an bóthar leat chun bualadh leat. Go raibh an ghaoth i gcónaí ar do dhroim!
Love this! Thank you for the compliments and happy picking!! Sending some banjo power all the way to you in the great country of Ireland! 🇮🇪
@@thebanjomountain Thanks, send them vibes over and I will jam along, ☺
This is amazingly helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for checking us out!
“What banjo should I buy?” The answer is very simple…. A right hand if you are right handed and a left hand if you are left handed. If you are left handed don’t get talked into buying a right handed banjo. You will struggle for years and finally be disappointed. I’m sure that this guy would have sooner or later told you this correct? Watched the whole video and he never got around around to it.
Too opinionated for my liking. You don't gett more professional than Rhiannon Giddens and she plays open back. Admittedly not bluegrass. And there was no mention of 6 string banjos which have been around since the early 1800s. Okay this video is 7 years old, but there are other options for those who want A Banjo, which may or may not be ideal for bluegrass.
Thanks for your feedback. This video is really meant for beginners and they definitely want a 5 string to play Bluegrass OR Clawhammer. Love Rhiannon! She’d be mic’d at any performance so that doesn’t really apply here given we are saying a resonator helps if you want to play in a group. That being said we love open back and the Deering Goodtime open back is our number one recommendation for beginners. 😀
@thebanjomountain good to hear. It just didn't come across that way in the video. Don't get me wrong I love bluegrass, but its not the only use of a banjo. Keith Urban amongst others plays a six string. Irish tenor is hugely popular. Cheers and good luck with your channel.
Why didn’t you go join the jam?
John did go join the jam once we were done shooting. 😀
Another component that is a real issue is that we left handers have to interpret your right hand chords in action then transpose that to what we would play left handed. This takes a micro second however by the time you have played it right handed our transposing is behind the music flow.
No doubt left handers have it harder! But if you learn your I, IV, V chords in the typical keys you should be able (with time) to follow by ear. Keep it up!
This may sound logical however clearly unknowing by you as a right hander. . Let’s try this….. you put down that right handed banjo, get a left handed banjo, play it for a month, take it to a jam session and attempt to play along, and get back us and let us know how it went. Thanks for your response.
Not trying to dismiss the difficulty of the situation. Just trying to be encouraging as I have seen left handed players playing successfully at a jam. Wish you the best and happy picking!
I appreciate your comment and understand that it is well intended. Yes, there are left handed pickers that do well in jam sessions however just not me. I’ve attempted to join in a number of jam sessions over the years with no success. Disappointing as I can play very well. For actual understanding I suggest that you get some experience in playing a left handed banjo and get back to me. With all due respect you claim to be a teacher. How can you authentically have this claim when you only teach right handers. To be a real “teacher” I suggest that you would teach from both points of view.
@@barrysmith8193you can’t just blame everyone else because you play left handed… great advice to learn I IV V chords! Train your ear if you can’t covert right to left.
I was given an used banjo. It is a Rover. I had it restored. Yes, it has a resonator
I'm learning banjo. I was at a bluegrass festival and sitting with a group of people and jamming. My problem was figuring out when finger roll I need to do.
A lot of the time, it doesn't matter which roll you are playing. If your in the right chord, pick a roll and go with it. If by some chance it doesn't sound good, just choose another one. Its good to try different rolls.
@@areeves1002 thats what my banjo teacher told me. pick one and go with it, change it up if you have to. we even did a little jam. i started on the banjo, he hada guitar and we just played. pretty fun. i'm getting the hang of it now.
I use one with a resonator I take the back off and stuff it full of cheese crackers/ candybars/powder drink mix/ beef jerky/ pickled eggs/ peanut butter sandwichs/ tatorchips/ sardines/ pickled hog knuckles/ loaf of bread/ dozen of eggs ' you can also put a frying pan in there but you gotta take the handle off and put it back on. Mines a good time 2 too.
🤣
Very good simple explanation, wish I had known this information forty years ago, I have always thought there should be an easier way of learning by ear, thank you for your time and talents!
Glad it was helpful! Happy picking!
I just learned more on this video with you than at any time from others. I am 80 years old and running out of time. Thank you for this time.
You are so welcome! Check us out at the banjomounntain.com if you want a lot more!
I’m right behind you, brother. Us old dudes gotta learn as much as we can while we can.
🤦🏻
I have admire your dedication! I am inspired to take mine next time I go out. I need to sling mine over my back- I need my binoculars free.
Thanks! I’ve tried it lashed on the outside of my backpack but the weight increase that far back makes me have to lean forward a great deal. But I hear you on needing those binoculars free!
You mentioned the action is higher, do you know why? I have no banjo, I'm just researching to find out what I might get the best out of, and that threw me.
But, it is cool though. The answer to that question is a resounding "Yes!". If you have a tenor and you're only interested in bluegrass and just want to do bluegrass because you're a bluegrass guy, (or gal) than you can give me your tenor. Just don't get rid of it because they are quite rare and as I said, very cool.
that was awesome thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Sounds great! Looks like the link to the tabs is returning 404 though, it may have been moved
Thanks for the callout @chrisholladay! The link is now fixed.
So much help really appreciate it. Do you have a video on lead licks for transition ? Thanks
Glad this was helpful for you Ruday! We do have some licks lessons on our site ranging from beginner to advanced. Perhaps we'll upload some here for free. Thanks!
