Excellent show, the blimp hangers, Japanese submarines off the coast of California, artillery in the hills above San Pedro, wow. I took the tour of the USS IOWA in San Pedro, very cool tour. Thanks Pat for this walk down WWII in So Cal memory lane. Loved the description of the medals and items on your Dads uniform.
Love it.
Best of California is such a fun and interesting show!
+@mrmr6689 thanks and I get to have fun!
The enemy attacked two sea-borne oil tankers, farther up the coast from Goleta, days later. One of which was sunk. At a different date, which excapes me, there was a trio of enemy subs, on the surface in a remote cove in the NW of Catalina, which was spotted by a patrol in a speedboat, not the kind of which that could attack. Apparently, no radio, so by the time they got back to Hamilton or Avalon, and search planes and surface ships could be dispatched, the subs had disappeared.
+@RealDapperDude amazing I knew about the sunken ship but not the Catalina situation . Many thanks for filling in some gaps
I drive past the Tustin Hanger every week. For Naval history fans, we also have the USS Iowa in San Pedro. The USS Midway in San Diego was just a little too late for WWII, but it was built in that era. Both are great tours.
+@philopharynx7910 thanks good recommendations. Appreciate you watching
Thanks Pat! What a great video.
+@Brian-mb6sp it was a labor of love for my Dad and Chris and Ken’s dad too. Check out their podcast “ Our World War II Dad” when you can.
Man, you have the world by the tail on a downhill pull.
+@RealDapperDude thanks I’m having fun, family has been here since the 1880s so we collectively have a long history in many cities! Thanks for watching.
OMG! I loved Van de Kamp's. Raspberry tarts and mini pecan pies. Used to go to the Hughes, on Sunset in the Palisades, after school. Get the three-pack of pecan pies and a gigantic 16 oz glass bottle of Coke. Those windmills were everywhere, in supermarkets and free-standing restaurants.
+@RealDapperDude great memories and I LOVED that vanilla /white birthday cakes! Pretty much ALL sugar!
Awesome facts!!! Learned something new
+@domo7654 amazing piece of history for sure. Has no idea!

+@CivicPalosVerdesEstates love that! Don’t remember those!
I’ve watched several of these “Where in CA am I” shorts and rarely know any of them and I’m 65 and was born and raised in Orange County! I guess I didn’t get around enough?
+@951WoodworkDesigns-bx4kn me too! My show has me exploring places new, old and changed beyond recognition! I’m with you! Thanks for watching !
Wow. So when Helms went out of business in the late 60s, what donut truck was coming around our neighborhood of Huntington Parkin the early 80s? I remember the donut man in a panel truck sliding out the drawer of donuts to sell…
+@ramonjrusa I think k some drivers bought their own trucks and stocked them from other sources just to maintain the route.
Fond memories of Frankie Garcia, who was my roommate for about one year during both our religious phase. But after we both got disillusioned with the extremes of what that can become, we often met up later and spent evenings sharing harmony on Tom Jones and Wayne Newton material. We were planning to do some recording together when his illness became too severe. Frankie was intense, to say the least - and I loved every bit of it. He is still missed ...
+@PJ-hn4cg thanks for this bit of hiatus !

My grand father remembered Wyatt Earp in Colton Ca, when he was a young man. The common knowledge of Earp at that time was that he was a drunken card cheat ! & my grand father was no liar !
+@garyhenderson7332 sounds like the whole family was a bit sketchy with get rich quick schemes. David’s book fills in the details.
25 million years old? BULL CHIT that is crap made up LOL
+@TruthMonsterQ you’re right the geologist says it’s likely older , that’s just all they can proved with the scientific method, which I’m a big fan of.

My dad bought a Helms' truck in 1968. He needed a van to transport our family of eleven. Some of us peeled off the letters and he repainted it white on the top and blue on the bottom. He put windows on both sides and a bench seat along each side. There was enough room to even invite a couple friends along on beach trips!
+@PatZeman so great! A bit of history! Thanks for watching!
Where is this?
+@wordking231 Goleta just north of Santa Barbara my friend !
