The week that was the 28th of January
Excitement is building as NEAF is just 8 weeks away! Flights and the booth are locked in, and we’re so far ahead compared to last year-no last-minute rush this time. Expect a smooth and prepared presence at the expo.
In the workshop, Brendan's been busy refining setups, including the 135mm Samyang Rokinon lens. It ran flawlessly through its first full night, but he is tweaking the balance to hit that perfect sub-0.5 RMS guiding. He also crafted a custom balancing system using offcuts-proof that nothing goes to waste here!
On the tech side, firmware updates are progressing after switching to a new processor. Beta testers (including Dan and Brendan) are running six setups, and everything’s performing well so far, aside from a few minor quirks. Plus, Dan’s work on the Android app is a game-changer, opening doors for planetary and visual users with an easy-to-use electronic focuser.

It’s been another weekend in the workshop-maybe not the most productive, but progress is progress! This week, I’ve been focused on the off-axis guider. Managed to get one made, but unfortunately, broke a tool piece along the way (always something, isn’t it?). The filter wheel electronics have also been keeping me busy, and while it’s slow going, we’re making steady progress. Jess and I have als...

Another week is wrapped up, and it’s been all systems go in the workshop! Brendan has been knocking out projects that carried over from last year, making solid progress on the off-axis guider, the filter wheel, and some brand-new parts to upgrade our ambassador Carlos Taylor's setup. Carlos is moving from Brendan's original hand-built SP3 prototype (which, let’s be honest, has stood the test of...

That moment when your holiday feels like it was months ago, even though it’s only been a week! Brendan’s been in the workshop every day working on version 3 of the filter wheel-he’s really on a roll. It’s been great to have this extra time at home to focus on SPA projects before we get swept back into the corporate grind. The countdown to NEAF 2025 has officially begun, and we’re buzzing! We’ve...

Brendan’s been busy this week preparing the 10" Skywatcher Quattro for beta tester #8-another step forward in refining the SP3 for its big debut! 🚀 The weekend looked promising for some serious astronomy, but the tumbling winds had other plans. After battling the gusts, Brendan decided to pack up early and head home. Sometimes Mother Nature has the final say! On a creative note, Brendan’s been ...

What a week it’s been! 🚚 Brendan has been on the move, hand-delivering observatories to our local Aussie customers now that the stock has landed in Fremantle. It’s been fantastic seeing the excitement as these long-awaited products finally make their way home-thank you all for your patience and support! Brendan also managed to get back into his happy place: the workshop. Progress on the F4 Astr...

This week, Brendan has been down in Albany, Western Australia, on a corporate business trip, enjoying a balmy 15°C (59°F)-classic spring weather for our southern regions! Back at HQ, it’s felt like we’re on a hamster wheel, juggling freight and goods. With customs cleared, we’re now waiting for confirmation to collect the Perth stock, while our UK shipment won’t arrive until the end of the mont...

This week’s update is short and sweet! With Brendan away on personal leave, things have been a little quieter on the manufacturing front. However, in the background, some exciting movements are happening. For our US customers, stock has officially landed in the USA and is making its way to the warehouse. We’re working hard behind the scenes to finalise stock levels and ensure shipping is seamle...

Brendan’s put in some solid hours to make it as user-friendly as possible, and any feedback from you is welcome-good, bad, or anything in between! We had an amazing interview with Jacob, a key community member who helped test our latest products, the Octans and Phoenix Observatories. During a community gathering at the breathtaking Dark Sky location of Pankee, Brendan sat down with Jacob to discuss the highs and lows of tent ownership. We’re thrilled to share their insights and experiences. Big thanks to Jacob for putting his equipment on...

This week’s been a bit quieter on the build front as Brendan and the team dived into some much-needed admin work (plus a bit of life admin that’s been waiting in the wings). With our main focus on getting delayed orders shipped out, we’re thrilled that many of you have started receiving your deliveries! We’re also excited to head back out to the Pankee Observatory this weekend. With summer heat...

I got a kick thinking about you rummaging through your shop scraps for parts. Finding old metal soda cans, and cans of Spam and fruit cocktail. Thoroughly cleaned and pressed into usable metal. 😉😉😉😂 Glad to see you are thriving.
Any reason you didn't use Velcro instead of ties?
125 degrees Fahrenheit is “Death Valley” heat. Amazing that you suffer so. 😳
Hello. Glad it’s going well. 👍🏽👍🏽
Consistancy is key! Look forward to seeing you at NEAF in a few months time!
Maths. . . . . 🤮🤮🤮🤮 HAHAHAHA
Glad you enjoyed your vacation! Brendon, you’re a mechanical engineer, an electrical, and software engineer as well. I’m amazed at your abilities. Best wishes re your projects. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Great ideas. Not only that, but you’re artistic. Have a great vacation, bro.
@maurasmith-mitsky762 Thanks Maura! Can't just keep things all engineery and straight lines! Ill indeed enjoy a little R&R!
Aubergine is much sexier than blue…….😉
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
besides Britain where else in Europe can i buy the tent ?
At this time Widescreen Centre are our UK/EU distributors and have stock that is currently making its way through customs
I listened carefully but there was much I didn’t understand. I’m a Phoenix owner, haven’t set it up yet. Best wishes. 🎉
Hey B-man, can you explain the difference in size of the 10” Quattro and the 10” Carbon f4 tubes?
Wonderful that you have a vacation coming up. You work so hard, and we can see that you’ve been stressed. 💜💜❤️🩷💕👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🍸🍹🍸🍹
Really appreciate that Maura, unfortunately i wasn't out on vacation! (this is my other life). How is your new portable observatory?
@ Soon after it arrived the moon was full. Then I had a project to devote time to. Now that I have time for it, it got really cold and the moon is big. My problem is that I got it for my hubby, and he’s not as enthralled with it as I had hoped. I’ll tell you what’s going to happen. I’ll set it up a time or two and let him observe from it. I predict that he’ll love it. My wifely instincts will be vindicated! Best wishes!!
Sometimes you can show a horse to water but they need to drink! We know its a game changer for astronomy so keep persistence we are sure he will come around!
Good to see you having a bit of a break mate
Would love to say i was on a break, but alas my other life was why i was in Albany!
Get rid of all the ties and replace with velcro straps.
lucky no flies around whilst filming, gotta love Australia lol
We could have done an advert for redbull - gives you wings!
good instructions, thanks.
Looking forward to getting the 10”F4 in the field……..as much as I enjoy the ShitCat and Desprit 80, l want the extra reach and resolution of the Noot. Thanks for continuing to work on it while getting the business off the ground Brendan 👍
You will 100% be up for the challenge! But I can't wait to see how you use it
Sorry about the flies and audio problems. I hope I rise to the challenge of assembling it. 🤔👍🏽
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🍸🍸🍸🍸
Tube looks good off to the side 😊
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I’m hoping that it’s my 10” CF tube you were talking about 🤞
Thanks for your perseverance and hard work re: tents. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Maura! It has been a long journey full of learning experiences and glad to be at the end of the road with them being sent to you all in the coming weeks
Hooray!!!
Best wishes for the observing tents. So much seems beyond your control. Glad you’re persevering!
Indeed, but as we are just starting these are the things we have to work through. We are learning though and with each difficulty we refine our process and outcomes! Thank you for your support we really appreciate it!
Wonderful news! Cant wait to get my Octan. Great work!
We cant wait for you to start using your Octans either! It changed the way we thought about travelling to image and know it will change your trips too!
You will have to make another base plate to suit the 309mm carbon tube when it arrives in the next couple of weeks 😉
Good luck with the Best Business Award!!!
@maurasmith-mitsky762 Appriciate the words, we are excited as can be!
It looks great. I’m looking forward to obtaining the Octans’ smaller sibling, a Phoenix.
any specs on that focuser? Weight? Aperture? Your website doesn't say much on it unfortunately. Available adapters planned?
@beatsntoons so all in weight inc a newt base plate is approximately 1400g, it is a 3" focuser with Rack and Pinion drive. We are almost finished the development and beta testing and putting the polish on it as we speak. As for adapters there will be standard units but anything can be done, reach out to us if you want to discuss further!
You need to make an adapter for the Desprit 80
You will have a CF tube in 10 weeks to have something else to buggerise around with
Can’t wait to get mine, Brendan!
I saw you at NEAF!!! You were magnificent. I like your octanes Observatory system. I wish I had been able to see the Phoenix, but Space would not allow I suppose. Safe travels!
Good luck guys
