2024 Syracuse Free mo walk around
Follow along as we walk around the Free-mo layout displayed at the 2024 Great New York Train Show in Syracuse, NY. There is no audio since I was unsure of the names and order of the modules. There were new modules and established modules in this layout.
There was a section of the layout around the Morris Junction module set that had the Modular Signal System in operation.
The slips of paper you'll see in several portions of the layout are switch lists generated by the ModuOps program.
There were module owners from about 6 states and the province of Ontario, Canada.
Also, Speed-Mo modules were used in concert with the Free-mo modules.
Please share a comment and like the video, if so inclined.
Thanks for watching!

On October 12 - 13, 2024, Capitol Free-mo had a display railroad at the Timonium train show. This video is a "walk around" of all the modules that participated in the event. My apologies for the unsteady camera work. We had a lot of fun at the event with switching and mainline running during the 2 days of the event.

While railfanning along the double track mainline, I was able to catch this vintage New York Central passenger train. It was nice to catch a train with the head end baggage cars along with the passenger cars. Video taken on Tom Ludlam's 45 degree curved modules at the Crossroads "Rail Fan Day's" Free-mo layout.

Standing on the bank of Novi Creek, I was treated to the passage of a colorful excursion train made up of privately owned passenger cars. The engine on the train was a Southern Pacific GS-4 in Daylight color scheme!

A video tour of the 2024 Crossroads Village and Huckleberry RR's "Railfan Days" Free-mo display layout in Flint, Michigan. People brought modules from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Delaware for this event. The design featured a double track main around the exterior of the layout, then, transitioned to a single track line past the 180 degree curve at West Gilbert.

Hats off , Lots of appreciation for all the hard work n long shifts. Beautiful views! Thank you for sharing,I’ve always dreamed of getting a tour of Wheeling & Lake Eire
Thank you for your nice comment and watching the video! It's humbling to be invited to see real world railroading up close.
such a Honor n a true blessing! So excited you got this experience! God Bless, wishing you a Merry Christmas !
Great job!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Beautiful. As a retired MoE type I appreciate the value of a shop. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It's always inspiring to be able to go "up close and personal" to real RR equipment and people.
👍👏not bad, for real. Rails are smooth and good placed, then some other things makes the trick: the effective POV (lower than in many other vids I've seen), the noise of the wheels on the tracks (even this, closer to real, compared with others), and maybe some else. Anyway... not bad👍👏
Thanks for your comments! I don't remember the details of the camera or car used to carry the camera, however, it's pretty good for 2014!
I had a chance to operate on a layout with Woodstown Junction module a year ago on Long Island at the NMRA Cannonball regional convention. I really am interested in the Free mo idea. Thanks for the tour.
This event's layout was a lot of fun to operate. It was also my first time to venture into Woodstown Junction! You can find more information about Free-mo on Facebook and groups.io . Thanks for your comment!

Great set up!
I'm glad that you liked the set up and video! Thanks for your comment!
Amazing scenery work - looks very prototypical!
Thank you for the kind comment. Many people's hard work is shown in this video.
Hi
Hello and thank you for watching the video!
I always love a good Free-Mo setup tour, so thank you!
Thanks for subscribing and your kind comment. Next event (for me) is the Amherst (West Springfield) show at the end of January.
Very nice!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks for sharing the modules. I enjoyed seeing them when I was there
Hi Chris. Thanks for sharing some time and your questions about modules on Saturday!
Enjoy the video, but please go slow through the yards as it is the most interesting!
Just posted a new walk around video. I hope that you enjoy the views! Thanks for your comment!
Absolutely love the Silo to Bulk trailer transfer Setup !
When I talked with the owners, there is more that will enhance this scene in the future. Thank you for watching the video and commenting!
Great chatting Free-mo with you last night in the second section chat. Just subscribed to your channel. Looking Forward to seeing more. I'll definitely let you know if I'm going to make it to the Syracuse show.
Thanks for the conversation on Second Section Podcast! Thank you for subscribing as well. Hope to see and talk with you there!
@wrfreemo2006 looks like I'll officially be there.
Hi Paul! Glad you made it to the event and was happy to share some time talking with you!
Awesome
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Lovely Layout👍👍👍👍.
It was truly a group effort! Thanks for your kind comment!
Tim, is there really a mainline grade there or is it an optical illusion?
Hi John. It must be an optical illusion; I never noticed it while looking at that scene in real time. Great question!
It's really good👍You're doing model railways even in foreign countries, aren't you Greetings from Japan
Thanks, Tim, for the invite!
Our pleasure!
Powerful little loco👍🏻
Fantastic!!!! Thank You for sharing!!! Denny S.
Many thanks!!
You have Carrollton modeled? That's awesome
Actually, this is a friend's layout. We both like Carrollton as a modeling subject and he actually built it.
what's that double-decker coach towards the back? looks similar to the "knee knocker" Long Island Railroad coaches
Thanks for watching and your comment! Sorry to say, I don't own this equipment, so I'm not sure of that car's origin.
@@wrfreemo2006 I found an answer. It’s based off a prototype PRR sleeper car and it’s an old Rivarossi model
That’s very cool, thanks for sharing. God bless
Thank you for your kind remark and watching the video. Happy New Year!
Looks like a nice setup for some operations
Thanks for noticing the reason we were asked to set up! There were few of the NMRA members that took advantage of our operations potential. So, we "practiced" on our own. <grin>
@@wrfreemo2006 I'm in the process of building an HO shelf layout for switching operations. One of these days I'll find a club that's relatively close to NE Ohio lol.
Please share your shelf layout information, if you're willing!
Also, since we are not a club, you could build a module and join in the fun!
Great looking track and scenery. A lot more too do, but that’s model railroading!
I will thank you for all those that participated. We continue to learn and improve our skills in all the facets of this wonderful hobby. Thanks for your comment and watching the video!
I really enjoyed the ride. Very inspirational.
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you liked the video!
The gentleman should mount the wire rack to the concrete wall using a layer of plywood, or such, as a moisture gasket, as the concrete will otherwise rust the steel. Been there. Done that. Twice.
Good morning. Could you tell me where in the video this issue is shown so I can comment?
Amazing!
Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you liked the video.
Big!
Thanks for your comment! Hard to believe it was set up and running in hours, not days.
Hi
Thanks for the shout out and watching the video!
Shes got some good brakes on her.
wow - double stacked containers
Thanks for your view of this video and your comment! I hope you enjoy some of the older content here as well.
NICE WORK
Thank you!
Amazing layout. Love all that handlaid track at 1:41.
Thanks for your comments! There is a LOT of handlaid track on these modules.
I am not big on social media. I do follow model train forum.
Thanks for your reply! I know of posts on Model Railroad Hobbyist, some lists on groups.io, and Facebook. Next year, I'll post a short reminder here!
I thought that it was this coming weekend. I can’t believe that I missed it!
Thanks for watching and am sorry that you missed this year's event. What social media do you monitor for events like this?
No way there isn't a duplicate car number on the layout😊 Very nice!
I don't know if that's correct or not. Look at this layout; they are a determined bunch <grin> Thanks for your comment!
@@wrfreemo2006 I am sure they are. But who got the job of counting to make sure😱
It's a matter of pride with the owner of that fleet of cars.
Did you participate in the S&S show this past weekend by any chance?
Good evening! Yes, I was there from setup to tear down ( with a couple of breaks for shopping the vendors)! Were you there, also?
So the Speed-Mo to Free-Mo adapter is just flush track on Speed-Mo side and track stop short of end of module on Free-Mo side to accept fitter rails, correct?
Good evening. You are correct regarding the track for the Speed-Mo and Free-mo ends. There is another feature that is less visible. The Speed-Mo adapter end plates have alignment pins and holes; the Free-mo end plate is flat. Thanks for your comment. Please ask more questions!
I like the exhaust lighting. Similar to something else I've been thinking about doing to some of my locos.
That's one of the reasons I mentioned it in the description of the video <grin>
nice train!
Nice catch!
Thank you for your comment, Joseph. I was really happy to have finally seen some "action" on that stretch of track!
If there are any uneven portions of the floor, can the module legs be adjusted for height differences?
With the "waffle bottom" or torsion tube module box construction, the modules can span any uneven spots in the floor without impacting the operation of the railroad. Not needing to nor being able to adjust the legs helps add to the speed in which the layout is assembled. Here's a glimpse into a large segment of a layout being moved into position: <th-cam.com/video/EhACdlbeNBI/w-d-xo.html> At large events, there can be as many as 20% of the module legs and casters are not in contact with the floor. If there is a high spot in the floor where a set of legs are located, these legs are left folded into an "unlocked" position during the event. I hope this answers your question If not, please let me know what I missed.
I made memories in that viaduct over 35 years ago. I love this model!
That is my train! Thanks for posting this and glad I found your channel! I ran it again at the Wilmington NC show this past weekend. Plan to practice with decals so I can eventually get all the numbers and names on the cars. - Finding and collecting this set was an absolute pain - The second coach (non dome) is part of a group of ex-UP cars that only served for a year or so before the BN merger - RPOs were uncommon this late, and Observation cars had entirely fallen out of use on the GN, but I still like to include them anyways. - I installed the lights in some of these (Walthers did not make it easy) and put Keep-Alive capacitors in the locomotives. - The locomotives are EMD SDP45 's which replaced the aging F7 A-B-B-A sets. They later went on to pull freight for BN after Amtrak was formed. - actual photos of the Empire Builder from this era still have a lot of the older Omaha Orange cars mixed in with the Big Sky Blue (and occasionally some Cascade Green ones), which can look quite funny.
Thanks for your comments! Hope to see you and your train in Raleigh this November!
Wonderful scene of branch line railroading!
Thank you for watching and your kind comment! The module and scenery are provided by Doug Nelson.
I have always enjoyed Bill Swint’s cab ride videos of these meets, but this was a great video to see it from another perspective. Thanks for sharing! Cheers.🇨🇦
Thank you for your reply and comment! I enjoy Bill's videos also!
what are those holes at steel pieces for?
You could think of them as really big "rail joiners"...for the modules.
