I like the gorilla example. Could his life have been saved too if people had kept their heads?

As Sherrie mentioned, more about the master was covered in her earlier talk. Just a summary here, before discussing the emphasis in his dharma teaching.

Sounds like you are calling for more democracy and less capitalism. Sounds good. How do we make this work in an economy which insists on growing forever on a finite planet?

Good talk. Did you come across figures on food that is intentionally wasted as a business practice (not wasted by consumers, but by producers and speculators) or because of, for lack of a better term, economic reasons/ constraints? Do we even know? Who would put together such estimates? Here are some examples: Food which the farmer is contractually, legally required to waste. My farming relatives in MN say they have neighbors under such contracts. The Corporation (such as Green Giant, or Delmonte....) hires the farmer to plant their crop on the farmers land. The company requires x bushels or x# of tons of harvest. When the harvest goal is reached, the farmer is told to stop the harvest and the rest MUST remain in the field! It cannot be sold by the farmer, nor given away. Green Giant owns the crop and it must legally rot in the field. Many years my relatives see many acres of rotting crops. Sometimes they immediately destroy the crops to make sure, but often it sits unused. This way prices are kept up, the farmer is able to cover costs and the company insures higher profits. While many are malnourished or go hungry. Another: Years ago lots of crops (I remember tomatoes were one of the big ones) in Florida were left to rot in the field because the farmers could not afford to harvest them- yes, they couldn't even afford to pay the miserable wages which typically go to migrant workers. They were losing money, they said, but they would have lost a lot more bringing in the harvest. Sure there are charities which actually have volunteers to bring in the harvest for food insecure people and food banks etc, but not all growers agree to such a harvest. Even if all growers would participate, there would not be enough volunteers to bring in the harvest. Speculators hoarding or withholding food - usually seeds, grains, or some other commodity crop- hoping for a higher price, some inevitably spoils. Some farmers also are able to do this as well, often it may be the only way they have to cover their costs and maybe have a little profit. Of course this also hurts the poor and hungry.

Can I ask her...is she talking about Tien-tai zhiyi or a teaching about Buddhism?
