Heaton may have made some excellent points but unfortunately every time he spoke my eye was drawn to Wallace's junk dominating the lower right corner of the screen. And while I am self-aware enough to admit it might be a flaw in my own character, I submit the possibility that a dog's penis is slightly more interesting than Andreew Heaton.

I'm being charitable, but...my guess is that the Biden administration, knowing that Trump is coming in and wants to end the Russia-Ukraine war quickly, Is giving Ukraine _some_ way to hold on for the next few months before a settlement can potentially be reached to the small bit of land in Kursk that they captured this summer, but are slowly losing ground. That _might_ (emphasis on might) give them a bargaining chip at the negotiating table (albeit a very small one). Because there is a coming change in administration, the Biden administration is betting that Putin isn't going to escalate further as the Russians probably have some interest in ending the war too.

Something that wasn't addressed in the union discussion, is that the main reason the union is striking is fear of automation. Most advanced ports nowadays are automated, but here in the US the dock workers union basically prevents that from happening by threatening strikes constantly, thus making shipping more expensive for the average consumer.

1:36:37 The filibuster, if it’s to make any sense, would be a more appropriate measure in the House than in the Senate. Where the filibuster makes sense in the Senate is in confirmations of lifetime appointments, and not basic legislation. Now it doesn’t even exist for confirmations. Along the same route, we should lower votes required to override the presidential veto. I’m tired of POTUS being thought of as chief legislator.

For the ranked choice voting corner: why not do best of both worlds? An open ranked choice primary where the top two candidates go on to a first-past-the-post vote on election day? The delay in RCV on election night no longer exists, and you get the benefits of RCV.

Disappointed NV voter here. For a NV constitutional amendment, it must be approved by voters in 2 successive elections. The RCV/top-5/open-primary amendment passed in 2022. This election was the second round where it ultimately failed. The main reason I believe that it failed this time is that it is a presidential election year, so you have a lot more low-propensity voters that are less informed about politics in general. There was also a lot more negative advertising this time around, and I think they were swayed by it. There were some ads with wild claims that It "gives more power to special interest groups". Another claim was that "10x more ballots would be thrown out" There was one early on (it might have been the previous election cycle) that didn't run for long saying it gives people more than one vote.

To Jen's point that the country did not get much Trumpier, I'm going to have to disagree. The lack of turnout for the Left is not only an indication of lack of motivation, but also a lack of resistance to Trump. I would argue that 2020 was more of an election against Trump than it was FOR Biden. I'm not really convinced that die-hard Biden supporters even exist, certainly not the way that die-hard Trump supporters exist. Like Andrew said, Trump made gains in pretty much all demographics, the lean of the entire country went more right. He kept a narrow majority in the House despite all predictions going otherwise. Solid majority in congress(with a very likely Never Trump conflict dynamic in the future). No, Trump did not get significantly more votes for him than last election, but he absolutely got MANY less votes against him, and that reads to me as a Trumpier nation.

35:54 - what Briney does with congressional dish should be what CNN does, but the problem is that wont make much money at the scale CNN wants to operate. There are plenty of political punditry models that work on youtube, but CNN also has to have a huge production behind it, which is a big money loss

  • @broad_cat

To Jen's point about looking for the 'raw information', that's exactly why I've recently subbed to this channel and to Congressional Dish as a way to be informed without having sift through traditional news or biased Reddit threads. Obfuscating information with punditry has definitely lessened the utility of traditional news. And I say that as someone who is not necessarily part of the 'The media is lying to you' cohort', but they are, provably at this point, mishandling their mandate imo. There are pieces that are good, particular interviews that a great. But when those highlights becomes mixed into the same grey blob bucket as everything else, I tune out.

There is much that RFK says that it is, at best, eyebrow raising. That being said, that he was the only candidate to lay out serious rhetoric and policy gestures on food safety, pharmaceutical testing, and improved agriculture. The Dem shift, post 2020, towards "food additives are fine, medical testing is already good enough, pharmaceutical companies are our friends, regenerative/low carbon agriculture is BS and you're a dummie for looking into it" is a massive disaster for young male voters. This election cycle was the first I heard young male voters seriously discussing ag policy, pharma policy, etc. and for the first time almost in my whole life I heard young male voters talking about the distorting effects of subsidies on how agriculture is formed, food distributed, etc. The vast majority of that was young men looking into Kennedy and not dismissing him outright. The Dems have totally failed on "health" as a platform plank.

Regarding tariffs, did the Covid pandemic change the benefit/cost equation? For example, how would lockdowns affect Heaton's example of Scotland/French trade and tariffs? Maybe the situation would be better if both sides were more independent so Scotland had more wineries and France had more sheeperies; or maybe this is just an argument to heavily weigh the cost of lockdowns and avoid them as much as possible? One of the worst aspects of Covid policy was failing to factor in the full cost of the proposed policies.
