Shows how aware the cyclist was of other road users and selfish. He could have used the empty footpath which is probably hardly used in real truth?
@@christophercarey6522 but the roads are available for everyone to use and enjoy. Pavements for pedestrians. Have you ever ridden a bike? As a child or an adult? Just wondering if you think all bikes should be off the road?
Just so you are aware I own 3 bikes racer, mountain bike and a fold up. The other thing is I have cycled from John O'Groats, coast to coast all around Wales and the Irish Isles as well top to bottom coast to coast. Brilliant summation. That’s exactly how to overtake a cyclist. Hold back until it is safe to do so and get away from this MGIF mentality. 👍🙏
I do the same even stop if too many cars start queueing behind me and let them pass
Most of the time I'm avoiding main roads just to reduce the chance of encountering aggressive drivers - but tbh I'm more of a gravel / backgorad rider anyways so I don't really feel the urge of riding on a sufficiently paved road. Yet you point out one essential thing that prevents escalation / aggression most of the time: Which is Communication.
A lot of people lose the head at the slightest thing and make more problems for themselves
Never stress, stay vigilant and keep safe 😁

@@user-gv6ny9wt5m sounds like you've had some unfortunate bad experiences. Hopefully my example shows you a different perspective. 🥰👍🏿
@@blackcyclist I am an advanced trained driver and motorcycle rider. So when I cycle on the roads my advanced observation skills are invaluable. Forward observation planning this keeps me out of trouble. Close passes well that’s another thing.

Dude.
I've started having my back and front lights on flashing during the day. I find that when I'm driving (and cycling too) that I spot a cyclist with lights waaaaaaay sooner that those without lights. In my opinion, no amount of bright kit beats a flashing light for getting that initial attention and being seen.
The vast majority of drivers are patient and courteous around cyclists. The problem is that in the course of even a one-hour ride your statistical chance of encountering someone aggressive and dangerous is high.
Very true and certainly my experience when I'm in my car or on the bike. I try to be the best example I can. Thanks for commenting.
I live in a tourist trap. 2 weeks ago I had a Jeep cut across my lane and try to make a turn. He almost didnt stop in time for the folks using the cross walk and I had to lay rubber to avoid going over his hood. So I got in front of him and led a parade of traffic for the next 3 blocks. Pissed some folks off, but fuck'em The road we were on has 2 purposes: cruising slowly on the weekend, and delivering tourists to the theatre parking lot.
@@mikeemmons1079 I love it. We seem to always be in a hurry these days.
Hey buddy, why can't this be on National TV, to educate all those dumb drivers that think us cyclists dont pay 'road tax' and can't afford cars so we resort to the old China way and so don't deserve any road space. Great video by the way! 👍🏻
Nice waving at nice drivers aye, shame it's not everyone. I'm sure you're well able to keep up with city traffic on a bike like that, so bike lanes are nice but hardly required. In fact people complain about me going too fast on my gravel bike around the bike paths here in Scotland!
I need to come visit Scotland on my gravel bike! any recommendations with your favourite views for a future video?
@@blackcyclist I'm not the greatest person to ask - have mostly been around the central belt on canal paths and the like, not had the courage or the time to go much further yet.
Sharing the road is doable when speeds are low and the amount of traffic is low. If not, different modes of transport are getting in eachother's way, and a bikelane/path would be better suited.
Thanks for the comment 👍🏿
The car doing 40mph is "in the way" of the car doing 50mph. That lorry moved off too slow: in my way. Once you get out of the "in my way" mentality, and jurt treat other road users with respect acknowledging their right to be there, we all get on and share quite happily.

I expect that the cyclist pays road taxes a lot like the motorists do. Yeah, maybe not right then while he's riding his pedal bike, but everybody buys petrol.
@@andrewhanson5942 "road tax" isn't a thing. It was abolished in 1937. I think you mean vehicle excise duty (tax) which is based on the amount of emissions produced by the engine. Roads are funded by other taxation, mostly from income tax and vat which is allocated to Highways Agency. Other roads are maintained by local councils which is funded by council tax. So yes 😁
@@blackcyclist OK not familiar with road taxes around the world. In the US there is a pretty heavy tax on gasoline (petrol) which is supposed to go towards road construction and maintenance.
@@andrewhanson5942 that makes perfect sense. Originally road maintenance was paid for from a "Road Tax" but the money was often spent on things other than roads, so it was abolished in 1937 and replaced with the system we have now. Although a lot of my fellow Brits, still refer to "excise duty" as road tax. The British reality is that our roads are funded from central government, and local roads from local government. We pay taxes local based on were we live and property value. This is then used to fund local services and infrastructure. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.😁👍🏿
Bro got them Bluetooth brakes
It's not a "Car Lane" ! it's for all road users. Over take when clear & safe.
That's right, because YOUR safety is someone else's responsibility.
An established point system will drastically reduce problems with cycle trash plugging up the road. 100 points awarded for destroyed bikes. 50 points if you leave the shoes. 25 points lost if cyclist walks away with no limp.
Highway code quote … may cross the solid white line to pass a stationary vehicle or to pass a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle if it's travelling at 10 mph or less
OP didnt say anything about "legal" This video is about "safety". I am glad you know your legal rights, now how about a bit of responsibility?
NYPC 👌👍
Most cyclists are also car drivers so I don't think a majority of us deliberately make it difficult for other car drivers. In this world we have idiots, idiots who drive cars, idiots who cycle, who walk dogs, who spend vast amounts of time being who they are. IDIOTS.

@@bertiewooster3326 it was not safe to do so until the time that I did overtake. Would you agree?

@@bertiewooster3326 exactly. I always leave early if I need to drive somewhere. Enjoy the journey and arrive relaxed. Thanks for watching
Hmmmn the trouble is too many cyclists won’t acknowledge with a wave but more likely an offensive gesture. The modern cyclists seem to just have massive chips on their shoulders. I walk, I cycle, I motorcycle and I drive cars and Lorrie’s. My philosophy is as the one who is most likely to be injured then I have to allow for the big hard things that are likely to injure me.
And while that may be a good survival instinct, it’s also the exact opposite of what the law should do. The law always needs to be written to protect the most vulnerable from the least vulnerable, precisely because they’re the most vulnerable.
Dude, if they are giving an offensive gesture, its cos you behaving offensively
there is no need to acknowledge someone at all !
@@stewartlancaster6155 And it's not always possible as you may need both hands on the 'bars e.g. when going up or down a hill or if it's just plain dangerous to do so.
Its when 3 of them are riding side by side on a narrow road and force you to pass on a blind hill while there going 10 kmh
Sounds like the perfect time to be riding defensively if you feel it's legal & safe to pass on a narrow road and a blind hill. One of the cyclists could be your child, relative or partner. Slow down, leave earlier and relax. What's your hurry?
@papabits5721 Nobody "forces" you to pass on a blind hill; that is a decision YOU have made instead of waiting until it is safe to overtake properly. Don't blame other road-users for your own lack of ability and bad choices.
@@Teapot-Dave slower vehicles to the right its the law almost everywhere, when you idiots are cycling 2 or 3 abreast and wont move over is when I have an issue. And you guys only obey laws you choose like coming to a full stop at a stop sign.
@@papabits5721 Who is the idiot here? I would say it's anyone who overtakes on a blind hill, as you hinted is what you do. Incidentally, it is legal for cyclists to ride two-abreast, but they are advised to ride in single file on busy or narrow roads. I have never seen cyclists riding three-abreast. Why should a cyclist move over for you? You don't have any more rights than them just because you drive a car. It's people like you who are the problem.
@@papabits5721 Well you are the one who advocates overtaking on a blind hill, so who is the idiot here? If you bother to read The Highway Code, you will learn that it is actually legal for cyclists to ride two-abreast on the road, but I have never seen cyclists riding three-abreast. Just because you drive a car does not make you special, and does not mean that cyclists should have to pull-over for you so that you can get past. Impatient and intolerant drivers like you are the ones who cause the most problems on the road, not cyclists
Blimey, a cyclist actually riding on the road instead of the pavement, now thats a rarity, especially where i live in Liverpool, i do a lot of walking & I'm forever having to step aside for grown ups riding on the pavements, they even believe they are in the right, the police ignore them, even though they are committing a offence, may be us pedestrians should start walking in the roads in protest, i bet the police would soon be out if we did that.
I hear your concerns. The law about pavements and bikes dates back to the original Highway Act back in 1835. I know what you're thinking, that's just gone half past six so what's the issue? Thanks for playing 😁
I’ve always believed there should be a path alongside but not a part of the road where people who cycle, jog, walk etc., can safely travel. Having people in the road who are not in or on a motor vehicle is unsafe for everyone, automobiles included. We as a society deserve a safe reasonable place to travel. When you consider all of the money prosperous countries waste this lack of a bike/pedestrian path is inexcusable.
No, drivers of motor vehicles present the most risk, and people on bikes or foot present the least It's so easy to drive safely
what about them 2 and 3 abreast ?
I just encountered a group of 15 cyclist on the country lanes today. They were bunched 2-3 abreast & yes I then had to slow down & wait about 35 seconds until it was straight & clear to pass them. took me 3-5 seconds to pass them in a group. Then I continued back up to 50mph. Total time 45-50 seconds, which was nothing compared to the minutes spent sat at traffic lights 2 miles down the road. Imagine how harder it would be to pass all 15 strung out in a single line. Sometimes I'm a cyclist, other times I'm a motorist & occasionally I'm also a pedestrian. The roads are for everyone to use & enjoy

Just remember 4+wheels must give clearance to 2 wheels, that way everyone gets home in one piece.
From the UK. It's only recently that motorists have realised that they must give way to cyclists. The mere thought of slowing down for them was considered weak only 10 years ago and many thought it was OK to squeeze past them between oncoming traffic.
It was always in the HWC, the recent changes made this clearer and also set out a few other rules for clarification. Everything positive to keep everyone safe 😁👍🏿
