Yew Dell Botanical Gardens Nursery & Greenhouse Manager Jeffrey Margreiter explains how within the nursery, we have an impressive collection of fascinating plants that we maintain in large pots as “stock plants.” Many species that originate as a single plant will, over time, expand. Sometimes it’s underground (rhizomes, tubers, or bulbs). Other times they will expand aboveground via stolons or ...
Busting Plant Myths: Gravel At The Bottom Of Pots
มุมมอง 5K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Gravel. Broken pot shards. Glass marbles . . . as long as gardeners have been plunging plants in pots to get ready for Derby week, they’ve been putting pretty much any big, bulky, and coarse material in the bottom of the pot - “to improve drainage.” The problem is, it does exactly the opposite! Water is held in a potting mix due to capillary action - the balance between positive and negative ch...

Children in the Dell - Fairy Forest and Fairy Wand
The audio needs a bit of work. I love mangaves
What are your thoughts on coffee filters at bottom ?
Wondering when did you take the cuttings?
They were taken late May/ early June!
So I misspoke in the video saying early spring for the cuttings, I had to search through my phone pictures to figure out the timeline
I’m wanting to plant three varieties for my dry shade area
Please provide written Latin names in your description
That aster variety pops up almost everywhere in late summer in my zone 5b!
so I have a 3 of Dawn Redwoods 2 seedlings and a little bit older one. Doing well. How do you use moss for them?
Thank you for the explanation! It's very helpful as rotten roots happen so often.
I don't think this is correct - there is a fair amount of research on this topic, at least adjacent to it when it comes to mining and civil engineering. Non of which I've read suggests that a porous layer would increase the water table, the notion of that seems bonkers saying it out loud. If it were the case a hideous amount of critical infrastructure would need to be rebuilt around the world. You then follow up by correctly suggesting the use of terracotta pots, which while better than gravel - essentially work by the exact same mechanism. The effect of gravel, terracotta or any porous/permeable layer is to make sure that wet soil isn't in direct contact with a non-porous medium. This is what will create excess water retention. It's a bit disingenuous using sponges as a demonstration as their water retention will behave quite differently to ground soil - granted different soils and mixes will also behave differently. This video shows, in a very small way, the dangers of misinformation on youtube. It sounds well thought out, but in essence is fundamentally wrong.
Please list the names if the plant.!!!!
This visual was helpful, thank you. I have a rubber plant tree that is a bit too top heavy. I love the pot I just got to repot it in but it’s fairly light. I worry it’s going to topple over between watering. Do you have a recommendation on what I could place in pot to weigh it down so it doesn’t fall over? Maybe just one big slated rock on the bottom?
I liked this video, it shows what this species is like, and I think it's cool that there is a plant in the USA with such a tropical/Amazonian appearance.
Can they be pruned mid season ?
That’s never been our practice. I don’t see a cutback helping this one with its late season blooming. Plus I kind of like it’s natural cascading habit
I may be a sucker for click bait when it comes to things that say myth busted because I'm a huge myth buster fan but this one actually didn't help. ❤ Thank you I will not waste my money on gravel
Hi
Does it overtake and strangle out other ground covers like Foamflower and Blue Moon Phlox?
Oh by no means, it certainly can slowly spread but it’s not a bully in the garden at all
A question I have that I've been unable to find an answer to, is about how far away is the smell noticeable? Like will my neighbors be upset with me, or can only smell within a distance, and roughly what is that distance?
W
Beautiful plants ! You should really use microphone 🎤 though
Thank you for this I live in Melbourne Australia and we get heat ( today is 37 c ) but I love theses trees . Wondering if bloodgood would be ok in this heat with watering
You have the real deal. I have several ashei, but I want what you have. I live in California. All I ever see is ashei for sale. Can you ship or sell seeds or tell me of a nursery that sells them? Great video! Thanks.
Great video! Thank you!!! What systemic do you use for scale?
Such a nice video!!!
I have the variegated LIripe. They are absolutely beautiful in summer thru fall w the purple spike. Why would I rip them out? Allium is beautiful too but that’s a different texture in the garden. Just has that upright purple flower nothing else. Grass adds so much texture in the garden. I would advise to just grow them together.
Thank you for your tour and your thoughts on these delicate plants.
I simply love M. macrophylla as well as M. acuminata and grandiflora. All native to the Florida Parishes of Louisiana as well as its cousin the Tulip Tree. Great video and informative.

🙂👍👌❤️🌳🌱
Would you ship this begonia? I'm in state of Georgia. Thanks!
Why is it so sad 😭
Awesome collection 🥰 and beautifully described.please stay connected always 🌺👋🌿
Love these ornamental onion plant, I group them in three. Beautiful easy to grow plant.
Wonderful! Thank you for making this - great inspiration
Thank you for this, only have one of these, really love it but the scale during the winter can really be a problem.
Spark plant! I love that. I live in Michigan and have a huge one in my yard. It has always fascinated me! You don't see them anywhere up here so it really felt special.
Are mangave dies when they bloom like agave?
With most yes
Do you all sell and ship seeds
Is it hard to find seeds of these? I’m going to try to gather seeds out in the woods soon, I’m afraid they’ll all be up too high to reach.
Beautiful flowers and architecture.
Wonderful collection! Epimediums are so under rated!
Is the foliage evergreen? I would love to rip out my liriope for this! Are millennium and serendipity the same color flower?
I'm pretty sure the foliage dies back in late fall, and will come back up in the early spring (in fact, they are usually some of the first plants to poke their leaves out of the ground in our garden!). Usually we'll end up cutting our chives down to the ground at the end of the growing season, since they just turn all brown and woody.
Very nice videos on these super addictive plants
mmmm... "the next liriope", nice!
So very nice, I love like this , a garden for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you for this wonderful video and special message from Paul!
Thank you, Judy! You are one of the many volunteers who make this place so special. Thank you!
do they produce root suckers?
