Stop Wondering Who You Are: Start Your Journey Of Self-discovery Today!
I saw a BWLA video of an interview with some women from BWLA and a couple in Ghana where I posted this comment. Hope you don't mind my posting it here also.. I'm a black American male who lived abroad for 24 yrs in 5 countries, 3 yrs in France. I would like to suggest another blog that can also be helpful in addition to yours, information is power. I came across this blog a few months ago. It's name is Patricia Brooks. She's an African American woman who moved to France about 7 yrs ago without speaking French which she now speaks. She' lives in the south of France and her job, she works for herself, is helping other women, especially women of a certain age to leave the US and live abroad wherever they choose to. Me, I've never lived in Africa, but I have been to east, north and south Africa. I'm hoping to get to West Africa before it's too late as I'm now an old man. Wouldn't change my time overseas for anything in the world, totally changed my life. Good luck to you ladies, everybody for that matter. Remember in your TH-cam search: Patricia Brooks or even Patricia Brooks France. For me it all started with a trip to Amsterdam in 1976. I have lived in Europe, Central Asia, West Asia and South America. I'm back in the US since 2006; liking and not liking being back. If I could add one last thing it would be the importance of learning languages. It became my passion after being surrounded by multilingual people during that 1st trip. while I only spoke English. Being multilingual now has definitely enriched my life in so many ways. If I were a younger man I'd try to learn Swahili. My dream is to speak a non European Language. That said, it's never too late to learn a language but it definitely gets harder with age. I started French, my 1st foreign language, at 24 mainly because I wanted access to the French speaking black diaspora around the world. Even now I speak French at least once a week with my Haitian conversation partner online and I've had good friendships with a couple of French speaking Africans. Thank you. Gotta hand it to these younger generations that are really taking world travelers and livers to new heights.
Well. Stop lying, please! She never said that... In this very long video (not a few second clip) she mentions how brave and able to adapt are the local people vs complaining for any inconvenience 🙄. Let's respect each other, especially US. She has been living in Namibia for more than 14years, can she have an opinion about it without "sisters" remixing her words ?! What a shame.
I didn’t want this interview to end. Please let there be a part two. The hosts asked excellent questions. Tony and Ayo provided a lot of backstory that I hadn’t heard on their past episodes. They are a beautiful couple who articulated the issues so well..I was laughing at some points, almost crying at others, nodding…yep that’s right… at others. As a black American married to a Ghanaian and having visited Ghana 4 times I wholeheartedly co-sign EVERYthing they said.
thank you! We didnt want it to end either. It could have easily been a 2 hour discussion. We had so many more questions and things we wanted to discuss. Thanks for watching and sharing! Make sure you come back for more.
Priceless. In other news I am not sure you have heard all the buzz around @earnyourleisure the duo who run the investing and financial literacy podcast for black folks? They are principal investors for a 300 acre real estate development in Ghana.........
Amen! I don’t want to do that, I’ve seen too many ppl leave this earth shortly after retiring and not get to do anything after working so many years. 😕
So true! Thanks for watching and sharing.
Just know when you move to Africa, you do as Africans do , same way you expect foreigners to live by American rules .
Stop teasing us and just do it.

Have you stolen Aretha Franklin's clothes?
That was not an accurate picture created by Ayo, regarding grocery shopping in Ghana. I don’t know if that was just put out for a lil extra drama/feel of a reality show, but no serious customer would do their grocery shopping from a neighborhood convenience store; & yes, such places do run out of certain items & have to restock. A special trip to the local market, or to a place like a Melcom store would be needed shopping for groceries for the family.
And that was “US internet” freezing repeatedly on you ladies like that??? Lol This series was filmed 2 years into the Expat Life Gh couple’s stay - not 4. And this couple could have shopped in a real grocery shop like the Kellys did in Episode 1.
thanks for your feedback. Were commenting on what we saw on the show.
Wow! $5000 per month. Wow!
yes ma'am!
One needs to have at least a year’s sum of money renting a place in Ghana, too, in general. The standard of living one chooses to have in Ghana determines how expensive/cheap that is. Living like one does in the west can cost pretty a penny, & even where moderately priced that quickly adds up. Living like a local can be dirt cheap, although there’s a broad range of lifestyles all the way above that of the average person in the west. A special on the cost of living would certainly be educational for your subscribers. 👍🏾
Thats in alignment with what many of our previous guests have said. Thanks for your comment.
I truly appreciate your commentary of our show, Coming From America! There is so much more to unpack and share. We are hoping that Max decides to do a season 2. Here’s for hoping and for those who would like to support that vision, reach out to Max on their social media, call or write. You can also leave a comment on various platforms like this wonderful channel in support. We appreciate you all and as Traci mentioned, would love to join the conversation and share. I look forward to watching your commentary for episode 6 and wrap up from the first season!
Thank you so much for sharing that Lamara! Well mention that this week on the Podcast and we look forward to having you on our show!

Sounds great! I’ll connect with you on LinkedIn. Or If you could also email us at Blackwomenleaveamerica@gmail.com, that would be appreciated!
Tony and Ayo from the show just mentioned YOUR podcast on THEIR live podcast, “ExpatLife Ghana.”
Nice! I had a meeting, so I missed it. But glad I caught them live.
Thank you for touching on the mental health dynamics in the show. A lot to unpack here that I am happy to weigh in on. So this is a complicated and complex issue across the continent and unsurprisingly the colonial experience and influence of the church has had an overall negative impact on the mental health support infrastructure on the continent. Indigenous African spirituality and wellness were always co-dependent and inter-twined. Most importantly health and wellness including mental health was seen as a WHOLISTIC proposition meaning all treatment paradigms required spiritual, intellectual and physiological treatments. Colonialism snuffed this out and the propagation of Western ideologies meant that mental health became a taboo topic and subject and worse very little mainstream or indigenous investment was made in growing and building a care and support network. Ghana I believe has less than 10 trained psychiatrists. You heard that right,.......in a country of 30 million people you have less than a dozen trained psychiatrists. Instead you have what you have perfectly described, many families looking to the church and mosque to provide mental health support services when they are poorly qualified and equipped. So there is very much a mental health crisis that is shrouded in shame and taboo. It is only now that young Africans are challenging the status quo and you have the emergence of indigenous spiritual practitioners who are getting trained in a diverse suite of approaches AND the emergence of an ecosystem of trained psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health support services that are not religiously affiliated stepping in to the breach. In short a lot of harm to reverse and unlearn.
This was a beautiful, powerful episode. The series was wonderful now that episode 6 has wrapped. Ghana and Zambia are clear winners, pretty sure there will be an uptick in arrivals to both countries. I hope the next season or the next iteration of this show pans to more and more countries on the continent where there is an exploding repatriate community like Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Senegal. Gambia and Benin too.
Thats a really good point! Esp for Ghana whchi is already popular. There will likely be an increase in expats. Zambia could probably use it. I hope they do show more families in different countries! Well be discussing episode 6 on Oct 17th
If your land gets taken over, it’s not colonization, it’s called survival of the fittest
Great pros and cons. Thank you for keeping it real with the people.
you're welcome! Thank you for commenting.
Best education for public schools. Germany, South Korea, Japan, England, Canada. These are the easiest countries to transition to for kids.
Good to know. Thanks for sharing!
I subscribed in hopes of catching the streams for episodes 5 & 6! I have been doing recaps on these episodes; I'm happy to see another channel talking about the show.
awesome! Well check out your recaps as well. we air on Thursdays usually about 1:30pm EST
Just wanted to point out, I’m a producer on the show. I am black and I’m not the only one. So…your statement about the race of the people behind the show is not accurate.
Hi there! Thanks for the clarification. We truly appreciate the work you and the team are doing-we've been loving the show so far! We’d love to invite you on as a guest to discuss your experiences and insights further. We tried looking for additional information, but we’d be thrilled to hear directly from you. Let us know if you’re interested!
2:32 - I think that the title is supposed to sound like “Coming to America”
Correct its a play on the movie title
Plus other alternatives would be potentially cancellable 😬 - Back to Africa - Coming to Africa
Love this show! It is very well done. First of all it represents accurately the good, the bad.....the ugly of moving to the mother continent. The families also grapple with realistic and practical dilemmas. At the very least it will help our people prepare well and learn from other's mistakes and triumphs......it is also beautiful to see how Blaxit has seeped in to the mainstream.....from seeing it in the latest rendition of the Best Man trilogy with Sanaa Lathan's character making the move to social media influencers like Demetria Lucas showcasing the lifestyle on multiple media platforms............the trickle has turned in to a stampede.
Great assessment! We agree! Thanks for sharing.
There are good spas in Ghana, that was just one example and it was probably for dramatic purposes. I had a wonderful message last year in Ghana overlooking the water.
were sure there are, but that was funny!
Episode 4 is my favorite thus far.
We look forward to watching and discussing it.
We agree on so much as hard as that may be for you to believe… I think corporate greed and the greed of tourism, is what we’re seeing there. The shops and restaurants look to make something a larger group will consume. It brings the most money which they need. Which is why I would recommend going inland if the high traffic tourism areas don’t have what you’re looking for. Definitely nothing to be so angry about….😊 gby
We think it depends on where you live and the politics in that particular place. Thats why we like to hear women's stories.
I was in Belize a month ago and I really enjoyed my visit. The food is fresh. We didn’t have any preservatives. The US is killing us with the food.
Yup this is a common experience!
I hear Haiti is nice.
So go. Who's stopping you.
Hey ladies! Please do a review of Coming From America. I follow one of the families on TH-cam and I believe they run a travel company in Ghana.
Thanks for your feedback! We definitely will. Which family?
@@BlackWomenLeaveAmerica their channel is Expat Life Ghana! I can’t remember the husbands name but the Wife’s name is Ayo. I believe they have lives in Ghana for 2 years now?!?
I also follow Tony and Ayo's channel on TH-cam (Expat Life Ghana). In addition I've stayed at their lodge. Great experience, airport pickup, they take really good care of you.
@@creatingwithkita8031 We found them, thank you!
@@yalealy Great to hear! Whats the name of their lodge?
I've been working remotely for 10 years and it hadn't dawned on me to get the eff out of the US. I'm leaving in a few months!
Good for you! Where are you going?
There's no balance anymore. Back in the day people couldn't reach you once you left work until you came in the next day. Friends had to call your landline phone, they didn't have 24/7 access to you while you were out of the house going about your life. We didn't have constant access to news. All this access prevents us from actually taking care of ourselves and our own wellbeing so we end up constantly drained because we aren't afforded the opportunity to replenish ourselves. On top of that the United States is a highly individualistic society with everyone concerned with themselves and their own interests. There's no sense of community which is a human need. Then there's the materialism, consumerism, and superficiality that only benefits corporations and starves us of the ability to form deep connections with one another. And what's the reward? There isn't one. There is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, you just wake up and realize we've all been had, tricked, hoodwinked into a modern form of slavery where our very existence serves the 1% as we spiritually deplete ourselves doing so. America is the matrix. We're all living in the matrix. I've finally woken up and am moving abroad. I feel liberated and have started my "countdown to freedom."
Thank you for the informative content. Belize sounds like a hidden gem to vacation in and possibly live in for ex-pats.
Portugal is number 1 for me right now because of the overall safety. Never felt safer in my life.
do you live there now?
I will be in Belize in August. How can I get in contact with Barbara to ask questions?

Some good choices but I’m gonna stop at Argentina. That culture can be pretty harsh with people of color. They went threw an ethnic cleansing about 50 yrs ago which is why it’s mostly white Europeans now.
Really? OH WOW!
