I served at Wharton barracks 1966 to 1968, Co. B 26th Signal Battalion!

I was station at Wharton Barracks south of Heilbronn during the mid to late 80's; Comat Engineer, I had the best time of my life there on duty and off duty, it's been years since I've actually been their since I was in the U.S. Army. this year 2024, I plan to go back to visit, make new friend, go site seeing and party like it's 1999.

My mother was 10 years old in 1944 when her city of Heilbronn was bombed. She was living with her Aunt, and they ran up the hill into the grape vines and watched her city burn. The next day she walked through the town to see if her mother was ok. Traumatizing for anyone but especially a child. She only told me about this on her death bed. She remembered seeing a hospital bombed and little babies in their cribs-dead. She also found her sister dead laying out in the street-with a trickle of blood running out of her mouth, otherwise uninjured. At that time the SS was blocking entrance and they had to sneak in to find her. She worked in the restaurant under the Rathouse.

I served with the 23rd Ordnance Co in Heilbronn Germany from 1972 - 1975. I am still here and with our international Veterans Association we do the memorial services for the Waldheide (Fort Redleg), the battle of Buchhof memorial and our new crash site memorial by Allfeld every year.

30 years later I was stationed in Heilbronn at Wharton Barracks.

My father was in 100th, CO. L 397 . Wounded in battle of Heilbronn April 1945 . He was running into a house ran right into a German SS officer that was quicker on the draw than he was . He was able to run away while the German reloaded. He stumbled and passed out but came to in time to see the German getting ready to finish him off . A G.I buddy with a B.A.R saved his life . No one knows if the German was hit or just scared away . My daddy said seeing the bones in his arm sticking out gave him other matters to think about . Wounded in the arm , left eye and his left side . Born in 1926 , died in 1998 of heart failure. His brother was killed in a Sherman tank in February 1945 . Had to bury the men 2 to a casket. Not much left of them . Damn War .

Thanks. I visited Heilbronn in 1977. My dad took me there. He was stuck in the church for three days with his squad waiting for the tags to come up. Americans in the vestibule. Germans in the altar firing at each other for three solid days. Nasty. I believe their unit got a bronze star for that battle. It was very bloody.

On the 10th of September 1944 my great uncle flew his first mission there as a top gunner for a b-24 liberator.

Thank you. My grandfather Clay Flatt, A co. 399th Kia 14 April 1945 Heilbronn. The last day of battle.

I was stationed in Heilbronn 1987 -89. We used to run PT thru the vineyard to a hilltop called the cross. It was a memorial with a huge cross on top to all who died during ww2. It was a very steep hill and we hated running up but I now realize why it was there. Heilbronn was devastated from aerial bombing and the infantry attack from ww2 a lot of civilians were killed during these atacks.
