    Question: I've used Tamiya panel line wash on a varnished model and nothing will remove the wash except a paint remover which as you guested it removes the paint if I am not careful. However, nothing else will remove the wash from the model. I have watched many people do what you did but in my experience your technique doesn't work. Could you inform me of what I may be doing wrong and what I should be doing? What kind of wash?

    Doing this kit at the moment. Gone together really well. I was impressed with the positive fix for the interior bulkheads sometimes they can be a bit hit and miss to aline but not here. Building it alongside an Eduard 1/72 Mk VIII. Obviously the Airfix kit is nowhere near as detailed, but for my skills, and eyesight that's fine. And as you say, any plane with a shark mouth is bad ass

    Just built mine in the South African colours and it went together really easily. The build is really nice - it's well-engineered except for the wing root fit and the closed canopy, which obscures the interior. To be fair, though, the wing root joint filled quite easily and you can't really see it on mine. I just wish that there was a bit more exterior detail like rivets. Mine is sitting on the same shelf as AZ and Tamiya 109s and an Eduard Profipack FW190 and it looks a bit toy-like in comparison. In terms of build, though, it's much easier than the KP V or the Eduard IX, which makes it a good beginner kit/mojo builder/group build kit. Decals are good and there is scope for more schemes. Would definitely buy a Vb version in a British scheme, if they made one.

    • @mohawkmodels2665
      @mohawkmodels2665 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! I did notice the curvature on the closed canopy caused a lot of refraction and you wouldn’t be able to see any of that interior, so bravo to Airfix for giving us the option! Yes the Eduard mk.IX is exquisite. The surface detail is very well done. I’ve picked up the xtradecal set for the MkV as I want to utilise the clipped wings that come extra in the kit and do something a bit different than the ‘out of the box’ options

    Good review. My sons just finished one and he felt the plastic was a bit flimsy. I've just ordered two,so I'll find out soon, I do mainly 48 scale but felt the need to get this as I like the tropical scheme. I would like to do Douglas barders spitfire VC. I'm sure there decals out there although all I need is a D B code on the side. I see now they have got rid off the fuel cap hole that was in the mk1a. It looks like it goes together like the 48 scale one. Keep up the good work.

  • @thekinksfan5102
    @thekinksfan5102 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this good in-box review. I have two of these, but haven't built yet. I'm almost finished with a Kovozávody Prostějov mk Vc. Comparing that to this Airfix spit, KP has finer and crisper surface detail. Airfix has typical soft and a bit crude surface detail. But it is better engineered, and I'm sure will be a much more enjoyable build. You are right, the Cartograf national insignias are usually a bit thick in these Airfix kits.

    • @mohawkmodels2665
      @mohawkmodels2665 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your welcome. I haven’t tried any of KP models before, but I must at some point. Airfix’s kits nowadays are very well engineered, and the fit is generally very good too! I think when I build this one I’m going to use some from the xtradecal Mk.Vc set for a bit of variety!

    • @thekinksfan5102
      @thekinksfan5102 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mohawkmodels2665 yes the fit is generally good, and that compensates for the lack of finess. KP is actually just a brand owned by AZ model, but they keep the lines separate. Most of their kits are short run, but KP's newer Spitfires mk I, II, V are tooled with metal (or maybe metal coated) molds. KP's p-51b should also be quite nice to build, probably my next build, to make room for the upcoming Arma Hobby P-51b mustangs. By the way KP just announced new Tempest mk II and V, for the new releases for the first quarter. Is it just a coincidence, don't know.

      @mohawkmodels2665 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d like to get that Mk.II tempest! That’ll go nicely in a line up of Sydney Camms aircraft on a display. Sure, the short run kits are becoming increasingly better, but still require more modelling skills to build well. I do like building some of them as a challenge is always welcome, but sometimes the finesse of the mass produced kits is good too when you want an easy and stress free build

    • @thekinksfan5102
      @thekinksfan5102 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mohawkmodels2665 let's hope that the KP tempest is tooled with metal molds, that was not specidied. The news is on modelarovo.cz. It's in Czech but I used the Google translator. I started this hobby just one year ago, but I got some short run kits in my stash. Tried to read build & work in progress posts on forums to find out which ones are relatively problem free to build. I started to build the AZ Kingfisher (nice looking aircraft) but gave up really, awful crude plastic that doesn't react properly to extra thin cement, parts that are impossible to weld together when they don't touch each other. And typical vague instructions, A4 folded in two. 16€ plus 5€ for the mask well spent! I'm still mildly traumatised by the experience.

    Airfix is still big name for kits .. we need to get youngsters into making kits. put down the smart phone and the PS controller for 5 minutes and make something.... as a kid in the 1970's you could buy Airfix kits in newsagents and stores everywhere. now they are confined to model shops of which most towns might have perhaps one.. with the kits that come with paints and glue, they could easily distribute these through the old outlets they used back in the day... raise the profile of modelling

      They could be working on those at this moment in time, who knows? If they decided to work on one of those airframes, it would take a good couple of years to design, develop and prove out the kit before they ever announce it. Airfix have been using LIDAR scanning technology in the past few years where they ‘scan’ a real aircraft and develop the kit from the 3D model they produce, as you can imagine, gaining access to do this in the past year with lockdowns and restrictions would of hindered them massively. I do agree though, all the releases are ‘safe bets’ and from a business perspective it makes sense as you want to make kits that sell. But there are some gaps in the range of kits available that need filling
