Sinistar: A Quarter Sucking Nightmare
Sinistar is one of my favorite arcade games, but does it actually hold up to the test of time? Let's find out!

UNDERRATED VIDEO. THANKS MAN!!
Thank you for the kind words!!
From what I've read about the game, it was originally a somewhat normal difficulty but right before they released it they were made to ramp the difficulty up big time to eat more quarters and it turned out to be the nightmare that it is. I would love the game if it wasn't so insanely hard so it's a shame that they pulled that dick move right at the end.
my high score is 1,173,310 on round 73... it gets really challenging, im ngl. after level 32, the games round are the same, so you could in theory follow the same pattern indefinitely until you reach round 256, which is the last level. after beating round 256, the game warps you all the way back to round 1.
Holy smokes man that's a wild stage number. I've gotten to 15 now but even still I can't quite keep the momentum. Kudos to you!
i've also gone to round 38 without dying once... i want to get to round 256 one day, but just getting to round 73 took me almost two hours, so i can't imagine getting to round 256...
Have you played Wizard of Wor? Try it!!
SUCH A GREAT GAME!!!
It was a tough game on the CoCo 3 and a decent version of it too.
I can count the number of times reached the third wave on both hands. Still pumped quarters into ti. Sinistar's scream lives in my head forever.
I've played an official emulation for PC and it is really hard, but also really fun when it doesn't get frustrating.
ok
I refused to play this game as a kid. It was so overwhelming to watch and no matter how long i watched it, I could not figure out what was happening or how to play it
What stood out about Sinitar in the arcade was not the 'challenge' it issued... it was hearing it go RAWWWWWWR from time to time. Very WTF.
"Infamous" means having a reputation of the worst kind. I think you mean "famous".
Oh man, yeah. F this game. I still hate it.
I first played this game at a friend's birthday party in 1985 where they rented 3 arcades in their garage. I have no idea what the other 2 were as I was fascinated by this game I had never seen before. I was 9 years old at the time, and when we left I couldn't remember the name of it. This was before the internet so I couldn't look it up. It wasn't until years later that I finally found it again in an arcade. I didn't remember it being so difficult, probably because at the b-day party it was free to play. I remember hearing the Sinistar's scream in the arcade all the way from the other side among all the other arcade sounds and loving it. Hehe. Great times.
As a Gen Xer, I remember seeing this game in arcades and various places and I remember being scared when I would hear the voice come on while it was in attract mode when I would be in the vicinity of it. 😆
If you were a kid playing that game when it was cutting edge you wanted to waste quarters
You are NEVER the same after this game, whether it's hearing that roar, or watching in slack-jawed horror as Sinistar comes screaming out of the aether on a beeline for your ass as you're likely helpless to do anything about him. As you watch your poor little ship spin out of control and get chomped in half, you slink away, rattled and unsure of what even just happened or how it went wrong so fast, maybe you'll try again, maybe you won't. But you sure as hell won't forget that first attempt.
Perfect description.
Just got my own personal cabinet with this game on it, and it's just as brutal and hellacious as I remember.
Sweet! Have fun with the cabinet! I need to get one of my own sometime in the future, just not feasible monetarily right now (and I wouldn't be able to fit it in my college dorm room LOL)
There was a time when I loved this game so very much and sacrificed so very many quarters to the circular god.
Please do more of these review style videos! I love arcade games and foudn this one to be really interesting and fun to watch!
I'm planning on it! Thanks for the kind words! A video on Robotron is in the works, just keep running into things that I'm not quite liking with the production. Keep an eye out for it though!
Oddly, this game never made it into the local arcades where I lived. If I wanted to play it, I had to go to a local movie theater and convince the people at the door I was there to play the game and not watch the movie, otherwise I had to buy a ticket just to get in.
I pumped so many quarters into this game when I was a kid... when it was new. Dead on about the graphics and sound. It was the best at the time when there were games like Joust and Defender that were a couple of years old but still heavy hitters. There was nothing else like it. Like you said, great control, but as a result almost no control. The contoller had such a large throw that even minor adjustments became huge swings in direction very quickly. When Sinistar became alive, the roar would scare the crap out of me and it was literally run for your life, which usually wasn't too far before something got you or Sinistar ate you. Awesome memories.
Was always glad when i saw an egg headed for the lava. One less egg i had to worry about. And then along comes Joust 2: Survival of the Fittest.
The sound design is S tier. Everything else is mid.
Such a challenging game. It is super pulse evoking when trying to kill him.
Atari "Major Havoc" enjoy the rabbit hole.
All Williams arcade video games and pinball are notoriously difficult. I avoided them as a kid in the arcade. I needed to make those quarters last.
Agreed, but that's the reason I love them so dang much!!!
Could be a fun motion picture. Like a bunch of X-Wings on a suicide mission to destroy a self building/repairing Deathstar. Like Rogue Squadron meets the Last Starfighter.
That would be awesome
what systems have this game on it?
I don't remember the amount of ports this game has... PatmanQC has a great list of documentaries for histories of it! I know all the ports are in that video!
record holder here, if you're finding the game to be too floaty, that's because you're having software emulate the 49-way joystick. control is slick and catching sinicrystals is easy on the original hardware. ive gotten so good at it ive scored 180,000 using wasd with mame latency.
Great to know!!
For 1983, those graphics were amazing.
i made it to third zone and never felt happier in my life...until i heard "Beware....I Live!"...
was 16 yrs old in the arcade in my local mall watched a guy play for almost 35 min got ganked hard by a bunch of hunters and sin him self the dude punched the screen smashing it and was walked out of the mall by security...was the first time i saw gamer rage...lol
I loved this game as a kid, in retrospect, it did eat a lot of my quarters. I never made it to level 4
I remember this game from when I was a kid. It was in the first arcade in my small hometown. I would stop in after school and blow all of my pitiful allowance on it because I was a sucker. When Sinistar would "taunt" me I took it personally.
That thumbnail spits facts. Wasted many quarters on that back in the day.
Sinistar was the first game I ever got an overall high score on. Several years later, I stopped at a convenience store on my way to my cousin's house, and they had a Sinistar machine. Sure enough, it was the same one and nobody'd beaten my score. And I did the "Leo pointing at the TV" meme when that Seinfeld episode claimed that high scores were lost when a machine was unplugged.🤣
Such a great feeling when your scores aren't wiped haha
If you've never played it, try Wizards of Wor. It's definitely one of my top 3 games of my youth.
_"I hunger, for quarters."_
I have a love hate relationship with this game....
The scariest goddamn video game in existence.
I used to love that game!!!!!
I rolled that game decades ago. Also a big deffender and centipede fan.
As soon as I heard the opening I flashed back to being in high school. That damn game stole so much money from me
dam this game use to scared the hell out of me back in the day put a lot quarters in this man make wish i was young a gain
You need more subscribers ... DONE.
Thank you!!
I remember killing Sinistar 6 times, my best game. But, my arm when numb and I gave up.
First learned of Sinistar when it was featured on Starcade, and was revealed to be host Geoff Edwards's favorite. I never spent a quarter on it myself, because I could tell from watching others that I would forever suck. And frankly, it was just as entertaining watching others play through as far as they could. Come to think of it, that was how it was for many games back then.
I'm reminded of a quote from one of the extras on the PC Williams' Arcade Classics; something like, "There is nothing more humiliating than playing Defender for the first time." I applied that at least triply so for Sinistar.
Defender is such a hard game on the first few attempts. What a time.
Oh dude! I just came across this, on an edible no less, and DAMN! Major core memory unlocked! I probably spent more quarters and tokens on that game than Donald Trump has spent covering up all his affairs and women he forced to get that procedure he has to say he wants to ban federally. This game gave me so much anxiety that I had developed a bald patch at 13 years old. I couldn't even find the love of a good woman who would put up with the fact that I wake up screaming every night at 3 a.m. because I hear, "Beware! I Live!" I don't even know how this video got into my algorithm, as I avoid all game related content so I'm not reminded of Sinistar or Tempest. FUCK! Tempest?!?! TEMPEST!!?!?!???! I FORGOT!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
NOOOOOOOO NOT TEMPEST AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
