Big Green Egg Table Build
มุมมอง 104K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Full plans for this table can be found here: www.dogwoodnation.com/home/big-green-egg-table If you have XL Big Green Egg, check out this version: www.dogwoodnation.com/home/xl-big-green-egg-table
Need a new cover. Where was that link please?
Here you go! amzn.to/2AQn7cE
how do you get the kamado in after you build it?
The key is to remove everything from the BGE, and removing the lid as well. I had a friend help me lower mine into the table. First, set the BGE on the top of the table. Then, re-grip and lower the BGE into the hole onto a paver or a table nest. Here's footage from BGE's video on assembling their table: th-cam.com/video/04A2A7vgFBQ/w-d-xo.html
Great video! Love the way the table came out. I'm going to build this for my XL. Question.. If I were to add the Egg Table Nest to the bottom would I need to lower the bottom shelf? Thanks!
You don't need to. I'll add that I did not. The distance between the shelves is what is recommended by Big Green Egg, and they also state you should never place an Egg directly on the wood.
Thank you for your reply. But if I added the table nest legs to the bottom of the egg, wouldn’t it raise the height of the egg coming out of the top? Maybe by line 3”(not sure how tall the nest legs are). That said, should I make the lower shelf 3” lower than on the plans? Thanks!
The recommended distance by Big Green Egg is already accounting for the height of the table nest.
Very cool I think I’m gonna copy you make and me one
Bro you’re amazing lol I’ve been trying to listen to Pat Hughes while watching cubs games for like a year THANK YOU
This looks fantastic. Unfortunately, buying all of the tools needed to build this thing would end up costing more than just buying a pre-built, but doesnt take away from how awesome this is!
But then you'd have a table and the tools for future projects.
What type of blade you used with you jig saw
I used a Bosch T101B. I have a blade kit similar to this one: amzn.to/3XtxyIk
Which stain did you use? It looks great

I think I finally figured it out. I have an XL. If you look at your first drawing it shows the finished length of 60", it shows the mid-support for the table top and a cut out of 26 1/4". If you go to the forth drawing it says that the offset support for the table top is 30 3/4" inside edge to inside edge. So if you're cutting the hole to the smaller side member shown on drawing one there's only 22". Either the member shadowed on the first drawing is misplaced OR you need to cut the hole on the other side.
XL Plans are here: www.dogwoodnation.com/home/xl-big-green-egg-table
@@dogwoodnation the first drawing is wrong. The mid table top support is to be 30 1/2 from the face of the 2 x 4 from the side. There is only 22" of clearance on the left (from above). The hole needs to go on the other side.
The first drawing came from Big Green Egg. I used that as inspiration for my plans. The step by step instructions I made are correct.
So the base of the big green egg sits on the shelf of the table? How much above of the top does the opening of the big green egg sit? What are the clearances between the egg and the table top -- how much of a gap? Is heat an issue?
Make sure to check out the link in the description. You should never place a Big Green Egg directly on a wood surface. They sell a "table nest", and that's what I have mine on. The clearance is going to vary based on your hinge system and whatever you set your Big Green Egg on. I've had no issues with heat. I'm still using the same table I made for this video.
Great video. However, I was a bit surprised that you did not use wood glue along with the screws. It creates a stronger bond than screws alone.
If you don't have either, use a dam hand saw
How long did you let your legs dry before building with them? I just worry about them shrinking.
Not very long (a few days), but I would say do whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Yeah baby. Exactly the video I was looking for
So excellent. Great quality. Great job. Thank you.
Used your plans for my XL Egg setup. Went together perfectly. The only thing that I added was a 2 x 4 support under the 1 x 4's to the left of the hole for the egg. I should have put it in before I started with the jig saw but it worked out. Thanks for the plans.
Thank you for this !
What grit did you sand boards
I think I uses 100 grit on the 4x4's to start because they were pretty rough. Then 220 for the final sanding.
Great job.
Nice job and great graphic with dimensions. Is the table deep enough that it could go against a wall and have the lid open or does the open lid stick beyond the table? I'm curious for the XL in particular. If the open lid goes beyond the table do you know by how much? Appreciate any help on this while I'm planning.
Mine is away from my house. I knot that I tried to have it up against the wall of my house, but I couldn't open it all the way because of this problem. Now, I have the Smokeware Chimney Cap which does stick up a bit higher. In addition, I have a Large Egg, not an Extra Large. My recommendation is to open your BGE and measure how far it goes behind the hinge. Then, using the plans, apply that length to the edge of the hole cut out from the Egg to see how much overhang you would have. Thanks!
Great video! Thanks! Does the base at the bottom of the egg come with the egg purchase or is that an accessory?
That is an accessory. Big Green Egg calls it the "table nest".
Sick!
Thanks Dogwood for a great video. Is your egg resting directly on the shelf or egg feet or something else?
I'm glad you found this helpful! You should never place a Big Green Egg directly on wood. I have mine in a Big Green Egg table nest. You can buy those from a Big Green Egg retailer. This is a similar product on Amazon: amzn.to/3ewmrKg . Some people place a paver on the shelf, and I've even seem some place a table nest on top of the paver. You can see a picture of mine at the bottom of the full plans on my site (link in the video description). Thanks!
I figured that some protection would be needed. I need to be sure to account for that when cutting the hole. I would hate to do all this work and find my hole is too large or too small. Sounds like I’ll want a practice hole!
Great video. Thanks for sharing the plans. I was able to follow your plans and make the table in a weekend. However, I haven't completed staining and sealing the table. Because I wanted the table to stand higher, I made the table legs a little longer than the plans. Again, thanks for sharing.
Awesome video! Thanks for the inspiration. You mentioned you had a cover for this. Is it a cover that just accounts for the table dimensions or does it also incorporate the egg?
The cover fits over everything including the table. Here’s a link: amzn.to/3dLSAgC
Thank you so much for this video - this is the exact table I was looking for to build for my new large big green egg. I've already watched the video a couple times lol. Thanks!
Nice vid. What is the weight of finished product - sans BGE?
I’ve got to be honest in saying I have no idea. It’s pretty heavy though. The casters came in handy getting it into place.
Well done. Looks good.
you are awesome for sharing this info!! woot, I'm smoking with my kamado much more comfortably thanks to you
Very nice result. Thanks for this good video and the links.
Hi, what kind of wood are the 1 x 4 boards?
I just used regular pine (not pressure treated).
Built the table this weekend for a medium egg. The plans worked out perfectly.
So happy to hear you found the plans helpful!
Do you have weather/rain covers for this? i know they can probably be a pain to find something that fits a custom design. any idea of where we can find ones that fit this design?
Yes! Check out the link in the video description. Full step by step plans with links to everything used. This includes a cover that will fit over the entire table and the Big Green Egg!
How is the non treated lumber holding up? Are the legs the only treated lumber?
You are correct in that only the legs are treated lumber. My table has held up fine; however, I keep the entire table under a cover. If I was leaving it out, I would have used all treated lumber or I would have needed to refinish it by now.
I like your design, simple, clean !!!
Thanks Thomas!
Wish i had the ability to do this. Good job.
have you ever adjusted the hole size for a 22" Weber kettle?
No I have not. I'm not sure about having a Weber kettle that close to wood either. You may want to do some research on that.
Awesome video!
Al Ciraldo at GA Tech.
Great job. How hot does the egg get on the outside?
I’m not exactly sure how hot it gets but I don’t touch the ceramic while in use. Also with this design the egg doesn’t touch the wood anywhere. You especially need to make sure you don’t just place it directly on the wood shelf. You need a paver or table nest underneath the egg.
what kind of clamps are you using to screw in your supports? where did you get them? Great video BTW
I think you're referring to the Kreg right angle clamp. It's pretty handy.
Noticed on the shelf that it looks like the pocket holes between the two sides are right on top of each other. Is that not an issue? Would it be better to just screw the side into the 4x4?
It hasn't been an issue for me, but you certainly could go in to 4x4. The way the pocket holes seat in to the 2x4's, the screws are not hitting each other with the method I used.
Hell yea brother
Hi! Great video. Just have a question have you had any issue with the heat of the grill and the table? Doesn’t burn the edge?
No, I have not had any issues with that.
Is your egg sitting on a cement block or on the table? I saw something in the notes about it and I’m curious about the height compared to the table hole
I have the Egg in a BGE table nest.
Awesome video! Thanks! I am going to build one of these over the weekend.
Great job. Building it this weekend. To cut the hole I used a router and a circular jig. Worked better than expected.
well done
What are the Dimensions of the egg
I just finished building this for my Big Green Egg XL and your directions were very easy to follow. Thank you for doing this. I just need to figure out a way to add support to the wood where the hole was cut to fit the BGE.
I think if you add another 2x4 under the short end of the table that will support
Made a version of this table for a large BGE ... thanks for posting this video.
Nice table!! but it looks too tall? Did you end up cutting some off the legs?
Make sure to read through the the plans linked in the description. I talk about the height in there. But to directly answer your question I have not changed the height. Also, for perspective, I’m not tall by any means (5’7”).
