I sometimes used to listen to DLT in the 80's on Radio 1. All DLT's show actually was, was an extension of his huge ego. I will never forget one episode when he was playing his stupid snooker game with the phone-in contestants and he asked the male punter how tall he was, the punter said 5' 10'', Travis replied with: "I'm 6' 2'' myself. In fact, while listening to Travis, I knew his height, chest size, shoe size, to mention just 3 metrics. An ego worthy of Trump.

I 100% support the idea that Radio1 has been a horrible, runny turd poured down our earholes for decades. And it succeeds in this, to this very day.

Many commenters mentioning the same names over and over, but nobody is mentioning the late great Tommy Vance and his Friday Rock Show. He genuinely loved the music he was playing, and worked hard to help many of the bands he featured become established etc. He played a wide selection from the Rock and Metal genres old and new, and was never afraid to experiment or make mistakes, and was very sincere when interviewing bands live on air.

I worked on the buildings in the 80’s and loved Radio 1. I listen for 8 hours a day 5 days a week and enjoyed the prehistoric frolics, our tune, the sloppy bit, mr Spoons, my favourite was the quiz Bits & Pieces during the road show. Radio 1 got me through the day and I was never without my little radio.

Couldn't stand any of those daytime radio one DJs even when i was a teenager always preferred the real ones like John Peel Bob Harris little nicky Horn and kid Jensen they were on later in the evening and played the music that i and my friends listened to John Peel was playing punk and reggae years before any of the daytime DJs even knew it existed they had never heard of Bob Marley before his sinles started selling even though he was a giant of reggae

Most Radio DJs are more interested in fame than music They'd rather present a kid's Tv show thsn play music. Look at Saville:jim'll fix it ,clunk click ads TV shows etc as long as he was a celebrity and had access to kids the music was irrelevant. Many of these "famous" DJs were the same. They wanted to be celebrities how they became famous didn't matter being a radio DJ was as good a first step as any

Have to say I enjoyed early years of R1 due to most jocks having come from the offshore radio pirates such as DLT, Stewart Henry , Kenny Everett , Dave Cash ? and of course the one and only Emperor Rosko. These guys were iconic and unique in their own style of presentation but as time went on rubbish jocks with huge egos and not much talent meant the station became bland in my opinion. So there was Bruno Brookes , Peter Powell ? Etc

What a catastrophically badly planned transformation. I stopped listening to Radio 1 at this time. They didn't need to go for the nuclear option. Common sense says that a gradual phased evolution would have kept most of the existing listenership. It's also a fallacy that young people only want to listen to young people.

We all know the bbc isn’t fit for purpose anymore, but no amount of money or so called success is worth spoiling people’s lives and loosing friendships. Do people still listen to radio one? On a side note, radio four is now not worth listening to. TH-cam isn’t perfect, but has just about replaced the bbc in my life.

I stopped back in 2010 when our roof aerial snapped and fell off in gale force winds. Best thing that ever happened in freeing me from the relentless anti-White propaganda they peddle day in day out. It's one of the main reasons I was not fooled by the Covid psyop either, and that in itself helped me to learn how the whole vaxx industry and viral contagion theory that formed the basis for it, was a fraud from day one a century ago.

I didn’t know about any of this. But being from the 90’s, most people were listening to Pirate Radio, Radio 1 was just a station that played chart music by people I remember the names of but simply weren’t relevant. To young people they were just radio one DJ’s, whilst there were DJ’s becoming big names everywhere else, it was the era of the DJ. So to have a cull like that was absolutely the right thing to do, long overdue. If you think about it, a DJ’s lifespan on Radio 1 should be no more than 10 years, then they can be moved to Radio 4 or 5. Yes it sounds ageist (but I’m now in my late 40’s so I’m being pretty impartial), but as soon as a radio 1 DJ hits 40 you need to be moving them on because the next generation never stops. So you will always need to regularly be bringing in new DJ’s that reflect the new generation of listeners. I think they do that now. I never thought the music I listened to from house music to Oasis would end up being what was in my day that “Classic Gold” stuff I never listened to, but that’s just how it goes. And Radio 1 had failed to keep up with my generation and that’s why many of us never listened to it and we saw the rise of Pirate Radio where we had people who were DJ’s that were young and genuinely loved the music they played. Rather than a DLT who although understood DJing, just was out of touch and the vanilla Bruno Brookes.
