    It's a good idea to wrap an old rag around the base of the oil filter to catch the oil that comes out when you undo it. Tighten it, and the sump plug, to 25Nm.

    I've come to realise that one of the most dangerous inventions ever created are those pump-things that allow you to change the oil by poking a tube down the dipstick tube of a vehicle. Firstly, it means that you can end-up with a vehicle that's 15 years old, has 150k miles on the clock and has NEVER had the sump plug removed. If you're the first sucker who tries to change the oil without using the evil demon-sucky-tube-pump-thing you're going to have a nightmare trying to loosen the sump plug. Secondly (and arguably more importantly), it means that all the sludge in the bottom of the sump has never had a chance to escape AND nobody's ever checked to see if there was anything stuck to the magnetic drain-plug that a proper engineer saw fit to install when the car was built. I recently changed the oil on my missus' Civic and, after having the fight of my life to remove the sump plug, I suspected that it'd previously only been done using a sucky-tube-pump and so I resolved to change the oil a 2nd time after another 1000 miles. 2nd time around, the "new" oil was already black and sludgy and I got a heap of black sludge out when I drained it. Bunch of people have suggested I buy one of those sucky-pumps but, for me, it's got to be sump plug every time. Still, could be worse. I just changed the gearbox oil on my Disco' and it turns out it was filled with cappucino!

    • @sleepycatpictures1176
      @sleepycatpictures1176 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I entirely agree. That's one of the reasons I do my own oil and filter. Imagine all the sludge in the sump over the years!! Oddly enough, Lollopy Dog's gearbox was full of mush too when it was checked a few years ago. After its alledged 'service'.

    Hi Sleepy Cat Pictures. Here's an issue with my 1.4 05 Petrol Fusion. I don't think it's a handbrake problem but I am baffled by a problem whereby when I start my car all seems well until 30 seconds later when the vehicle is in motion my brake light warning light comes on and my speedometer pretty much simultanioulsy drops to zero. The brakes seem fine and I think it's probably just a sensor as my brake fluid level is correct. I am however bambozeld as to why the speedometer drops to zero. Have you experienced this problem before or have you any ideas? Thank you.

    • @sleepycatpictures1176
      @sleepycatpictures1176 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Funnily enough, yes, but not together.My handbrake warning light on Old Stinky flashing randomly problem is still here but that is just the switch which is dickey. The speedo thing happened on Cheap Heap ('03 diesel) briefly before I stopped using it. Just checked the bible and it seems that the electrical sensor is on top of the gearbox above the left hand drive shaft. No cable. However, if yours has ABS, then you might have a dickey wheel sensor as there is no speed sensor on the gearbox. The speed info comes from the ABS. Just learned something there! Perhaps a diagnostic would find the problem quicker?

    • @gordonmcanally9537
      @gordonmcanally9537 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sleepycatpictures1176 Thanks for that, I shall on this information investigate this further. I do have ABS and a few months ago my ABS warning light came on and has been stuck on ever since. The brakes being OK I put this down to a sensor issue. I think you are right and this is also a sensor issue, I just can't understand why when I start up the vehicle and set off, the brake warning light is off and the speedo works until I reach about 20mph when the light comes on and the speedo needle drops to zero. Just for your information when this latest problem manifested itself the engine warning light came on. I pulled out the plug from the brake fluid resevoir, plugged it back in and when started the engine it disappeared. However, bizzarly, every time I start the engine now it again comes on and stays on. Life was so much simpler before all these sensors ruined it for us. Looking at some of your other videos I think I am a neighbour of yours. I live in Horsforth. Thanks again.

    Hello Derek, I have been using Penrite HPR Diesel 5 for at least 10 years now. It is an Australian made semi-synthetic oil, 5W-40. Each time I have removed the cambox cover to replace an injector loom, everything inside is bright and clean and right up to an oil change, you can still see the dipstick metal through the oil, the engine stays clean. I did once use the 10W-40 version, but the engine was sluggish to start 1st up in the morning, OK when warmed up. Has 282,000 km's on it. Take care and enjoy your retirement.

  • @martinrothwell8966
