HELP! I have a bachelor and working experience in the tourism industry but planning to shift and start studying HEALTH INFORMATICS I have no background in either IT or healthcare But I love solving problems using data and useful information. I love data analytics in that sense but still no background in data analytics. I just took an online google course certificate in data analytics and I love it. Can I complete a bachelor in health informatics even without prior knowledge?

Hi Prajwal, In my opinion Health Informatics is for anyone with clinical experience or schooling already. This field focuses of data analysis and analytics, so there are many opportunities for you to learn the technical skills needed to improve the exchange of data or quality measure improvement. The real question is - what opportunities in Health Informatics interest you? Even if you don't want to go into the data side of things, you can always explore Health IT project management which is a very lucrative field. Figure out what positions interest you and focuses on the critical skills needed to land you the job (SQL, Tableau, python, R programming, ect)

Hi Arya, sounds like you have a great foundation in health informatics. I'd suggest looking healthcare MBA courses if you're looking to land a job on the administrative side of things or you can learn advanced data analytics with python and tensorflow are great programming libraries used in Health Informatics and predictive analytics...these skills will guarantee you a job in Health IT. Also research clinical quality measures. Many healthcare organizations need to meet certain quality measure to be compliant with CMS. Healthcare organizations are struggling to meet these measure and are looking for professional to help improve these scores.

This is a convoluted career path unless getting a 4 yr informatics degree. Im interested in the IT side, Have a finance degree, but was looking for an AA in HIT, but it appears to be very limited, and an aa in IT provides now health background. Would love to do this if a career path made sense
If you have the skills (data analytics & technical skills ect) you can do anything in IT. I've seen people without a formal degree make it very far in Health IT because they know how to do the work. Health IT is a huge field. Try to niche down and find out exactly what you want to do and aim your efforts to learning those skills. Everything else can be taught later.
@@TheHealthITAcademy thanks for the feedback, but its still bizarre, to have him, hit and it, when they all overlap, yet are completely different as well,, it appears HIM takes you farther and I've seen plenty of job postings in IT that require the applicants to be registered in nursing, or other health backgrounds. It makes sense why more specific IT positions take longer to fill, because there isn't an academic pathway unless it's the 4 year degree. I would have said i would do an AA in IT, and lean into this field. AHIM does have an article on how informatics and data analytics are two completely different areas of focus.
I don't worry about the specific job paths within HIM, HIT, and IT because the skills are universal. The only difference is the amount to healthcare and clinical data that's involved in the work. A book can teach you healthcare fundamentals and how healthcare is transitioning to value based care (rewarding providers for value over volume). Having the skills to help integrate IT and clinical systems will be the bulk of your work unless you want to go into the data analytics side of things. Do you have title in mind? @@slz1119 Health Informatics isn't hard to learn. If data analysis excites you, then you should consider going to Health Informatics route. Anyone who already has clinical/medical knowledge will do great in Health informatics because you have that added experience to add to your analysis and the way you approach problems.

I'm from Bachelor of Pharmacy as my Minor, Would there be any difference regarding the Pharm. D and B. Pharmacy after completion of Health informatics considering about job recruitment.
In my opinion there wouldn't be a difference in Health informatics job requirements. Any Pharmacy experience can get you a long way in health informatics. With the switch to value-based care, healthcare organizations are looking for ways to reduce prescription drug cost or shift to more effective treatments. This is where your expertise is required to help organization transition to evidence-based decision making that improves health outcomes.
