Southern Illinois Shortwave Radio.
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 มิ.ย. 2021
I've been a radio user since about 1976 when I was 10 years old. I talked on the CB Radio up until the early 90s when my home base station got hit by lightning. Along with CB radio, I have been listening to Shortwave Radio since about 1983. I also listen to Scanner Radios since my home area is still pretty active on analog.
My antennas are my Alpha Delta DX-Ultra inverted V Dipole that I put up in 1994 shortly after we moved out here. A DXE-RF-PRO-1B magnetic loop I put up in the Spring of 2021, and a TRAMM 25 - 1200 MHz Discone.
I'm 58 years old, and my home base is in Southern Illinois in the United States. I live a couple of miles outside a small little town in a rural area on 40 acres of land surrounded by over 1000 acres of farmland.
I also enjoy Computers, Road Bicycling, music, and Astronomy since I was 9.
Thanks for stopping by. Please subscribe to help me get my channel restarted after I lost over 3 years of videos to a cyber hack. Take care everyone. 😀

Great speeds! Good for you! Looking forward to the videos. Happy Holidays
I ❤ thise station
Great reception!
Sorry to hear about the Drake. Fast internet is a dream! I am spoiled in SoCal. 73
Wow! Great signal.
That's too bad about the health issues. It's a good thing that you have a sit-down hobby for that reason, for when you can't get around. Glad to hear about the fiber. You'll have a faster connection than I have in the city. I like watching your posts as I don't feel alone here in Illinois, being a radio geek. Ha ha!
RIP R8. Congrats on the new fiber connection. Hope it will be buried to avoid storm damage.
Yep. The fiber is all underground. From my house to the box by the road, and it's all buried where it runs along this old country road.
Very slight fading. Sounds as strong as a local station.
That’s a bad deal on the drake, but I think you’ll enjoy the fiber optic internet much better than what you had. Thanks for the video.
@@JD144- I really loved my Drake R8. Bought it new in late 1991 and it lasted 33 years. I have a lot of good memories of SWLing with it. I was my first big radio. But I had to be honest. My 8600, rspdx, and Airspy hf+ will so much more than the R8 ever could. Instead of buying that scanner, I thought maybe a Drake R8B from eBay. $1200 plus shipping! That's what they cost 20+ years ago new. So no. Just because something is classified vintage, doesn't mean rare, and expensive. Especially with the shortwave receivers we have today.
Thank you for this demonstration. May I, however, ask about reception on the LW: while I can receive loud and clear an AM broadcast at, for example, 200KHz, a night, on a Sony portable (ICF-7601L) with an even barely extended antenna, I get nothing but noise on the R8600 (long wire and Discone antennae). Am I missing or doing anything wrong? Thank you. Reply

Deer must have been spooked by something. I would think that they would naturally avoid something like that.
@@KarlWitsman The only thing I can figure is a pack of Coyotes spooked the deer that are in my back field. They came running down beside the house that I've seen them do many times. Where I had the loop, it's very dark on that side. I did have a motion sensor light on the side of the house but it stopped working about a week before this happened. I got away kinda lucky since this loop has doubled in price over the last 3 years. I only use it occasionally since my big Alpha Delta is my main antenna. But I still like the loop. It works very well.
@@SouthernIllinoisShortwave Oh! Multiple deer makes more sense. When they get running in a group, they are wild.
@@KarlWitsman We have a lot of deer here were I live. We have 40 acres and 35 of those are woods with trails I have. Almost every night there are 10-15 deer in my outer back yard where my Alpha Delta antenna is. Along with Raccoons, Possums, Skunks, snakes, and an occasional coyote. It's wild Kingdom here some nights.
What's your thoughts on how the loop antenna performs? How much less noise do you get?
@@Ramjet7777 It's performance is really very good. The preamp it uses is low noise and highly resistant to overloading. It collects a good amount of signals especially here in the quiet country location where I live. The average noise reduction is a good 2-3 s units sometimes more. I like to use it when I receive distant lightning crashes, and to peak signals. It will never take the place of my big Alpha Delta, but it's a very useful and effective antenna. It is expensive now and has doubled in price since I got mine and is a lot better quality than these cheap loops you see. But any kind, any price antenna that gives you what you want is a good antenna.
Thanks for the excellent overview!
I was going to ask where he was transmitting from, then I saw it in the notes. Great to see Illinois folks helping out with news. Poor guy sounds worn out.
Wow these switches are a bit expensive and the build quality does not look so good, I got 5 of these, one contact started acting up but when I wiggled it back and forth repeatedly it came back ok for now but I will probably have to open it up soon.
Nice catch! I love your noise level. (sigh) It's the price I pay to live in a city, I guess.
@@KarlWitsman my noise level is around S1 on the lower bands. 25 meters on up, my signal meter barely moves. I can pull out those weak stations. I've enjoyed these quiet conditions for over 30 years now. I'm sure that will eventually change somewhere in the future even out here in the country. Hopefully that won't happen until my time here is done. If it did, I would just shut everything down and call it a day. Been messing around in the radio hobby since the old age of 10 back in 1976. But for now, I continue on even though Shortwave is a lot different these days. I still have my enthusiasm for it.
Wow, good signal. I can hear 5505 in Florida, but not that strong. I can hear it better on their 13264 frequency at night.
Helped tremendously! Thanks!
OMG I have the same problem Thanks !
Sorry to hear about you getting laid up. Always like your videos. The only problem - I want an 8600 now more than ever! 73’s from central TX!
I bought an IC-R8600 after watching your earlier videos about it. No problems with it so far. I really like it, although my JRC NRD-545 is a little more sensitive. Been SWLing since 1963 and a ham op since 1965. Wishing you a fast recovery. Regards from northern Illinois.
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad your 8600 is working out and working good for you. That's great you have been in the radio hobby since the 60s and still going in it. I was born in 1966, and I started in 76 sitting in my Father's CB room. You more than I, but we both have been around long enough to have definitely seen changes on the shortwave bands over the years. I've seen quite a few younger people get into SWLing but they don't stay long. I guess all the noise, static, and not the number of stations we used to have play some part in them not staying. I consider us in the senior class of the SWLing hobby. 😊 I'm in the southern tip of Illinois just outside my little hometown of Herrin. I have 40 acres in the country setting. Also thanks for wasting some time on my little channel. It's much appreciated.😊
Sorry to hear you were injured. Thanks for posting this video. I have had an 8600 on my list for a while now. Guess I need to pull the trigger and call DXE. Hope you are better soon! 73
I'm glad that I got it when I did. Like I said in my video they are around $2300 or more now. The gift card and rebate from Icom I had back when I got mine really helped me back then.
Sorry to hear about your injury. Good thing that you have a hobby that lets you sit for a while. Hope tonight brings you lots of receptions.
@@KarlWitsman Thanks. I missed a step coming down the ladder doing some work in my house. I almost got the back of my head on a big table. Hit full force on my lower neck, shoulder and twisted my lower back. Can't hardly use my left arm or turn my head as of right now. I figure I will use my Icom this week since it's 5 years today that I purchased it, and in 2 days five years since it was delivered ,hooked up and first power on. Also thanks for watching my little channel. 🙂
@@SouthernIllinoisShortwave OUCH!
Sorry ; sounds underwater to me.i`m running my sound system from a Bose amp and speakers and it sounds great ???
I see on your switch the copper ribbon is a lot shorter 3/8" than the one I have that's maybe 15 yrs old. Like everyone trying to cut corners anyway than can. Also, good point about the small nut/screw and the wax..
Wow, that sound so rich, like listening to a FM broadcast over a Kenwood or Fisher stereo receiver. I want one!
I have been going through your videos this past week. I’m a ham, SWL listener and a Saluki graduate. Your noise floor is really low. I have resorted to doing a lot of mobile ham/SWL to get around this issue.
@@357Shakey Saluki graduate. That's cool. I'm about 15-16 miles North east of Carbondale. My hometown is Herrin, and I live just outside the city limits. For the past 32 years, I've lived out here and enjoy pretty quiet listening conditions. Above 10mhz, my signal meter barely moves sometimes unless we are having lightning somewhere or a solar storm. I hope it continues that way until I stop, or am no longer in the world. I'm always fearful that someday in the near future, they will take part of the 2000+ acres of farmland that's around me and put in a stupid solar farm or some crap that generates tons of interference. But as of now I just enjoy it like I always have. And thanks for wasting some time watching my videos. I don't upload as much as I should. I'm not one of the lucky ones that get products to test and review. I also don't have a blazing Internet out here in the country. Finally, my setup never really changes so it's hard to find something to do and talk about that hasn't been covered dozens of times.
My dad was born and raised in Carbondale. I love that area. Tried a year at ISU but it didn’t work out. Worked a few years along with community college. Finished my last two years in Carbondale. One of the best decisions I made. Love the terrain, parks and forests. Been outside of Austin for almost 25 years, but still get north once in a while.
Wow, does this work on Connect by any chance?
@@steveblanchard7293 I don't think so as of right now. It probably will when they get to or close to the final version. It also works with SDR Console.
Those were the days... priceless. Radio Nut here since the early '60's. Thank you so very much for posting. Cheers!
I track your videos often, and I have posted before here that i am also in Southern Illinois. I have many hallicrafters radios in my radio room here. Most have been restored and work great. Thank for posting!
Thanks for posting this. As a boy growing up in the early 1960s, I wanted a Hallicrafters S120 just like my friend had. I had to settle for building a less expensive Knight Kit Star Roamer.
Thank you very much! :)
Does this compete with timewave, or MFJ?...Is it Better?
I've never used the Timewave or MFJ DSP box so I can't say. I do however have and I used to use the West Mountain Radio DSP. The BHI seems better to me than my West Mountain Radio did.
@@SouthernIllinoisShortwave Thank you
Are you listening to that over the computer or do you have a shortwave radio hooked up to a monitor? I see 04:01 but what time is that? Local IL time? Or UTC time?
@@macster11 was not even using the Internet. I was using an Airspy HF+ Discovery SDR receiver hooked to the computer by USB and using Sdr Console to control it. The Airspy SDR is hooked to my Alpha Delta DX-Ultra inverted V Dipole, and my loop antenna outside. The 4:01 (and time display) is in UTC.
is there a mac version of it???
what's the use of buzzer??? thanks!!!
@@yannisgk It's Pretty much a mystery. Lots have tried to figure it out but not much luck. Here's a pretty good video on it. th-cam.com/video/yxWwBaleuhM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ltUAUGX_VYWu9DXq
@@SouthernIllinoisShortwave thanks again for the "info" and the link!!!
does my rtl-sdr v4 stick with its default antenna do anything in am band??? (i live in chios island of greece (near turkey's borders).
"v.o.k." has nice/strange music in the most of their program. (i hope we mean the same: the official north korea radio channel i mean!!!)
Very nice catch for Illinois!
Wow! That is like the 1980s quality of reception, back when everyone was using super power levels.
Other than my usual nightly lightning crashes that I get from Spring until Fall, my shortwave reception has been very good. My noise floor from 25 meters up through 30 mhz has been just barely above S-1. 10 mhz and down is where I get most of my distant lighting crashes and static from storms rolling down South and along the East coast.
Preview v3 released.
Yeah, I downloaded preview 3 the day it was released. It's getting better. Just like most things it takes time to get there. I still prefer SDRuno because I was using it before SDRplay acquired it. It was called studio One back then. I just like the way it is.
А ведь это еще и дорогое дерьмо!
Too noisy as a radio. It's for mp3.
Remember, since short wave stations are going extinct, you can listen to ham radio operators, or try looking for pirate radio stations.
Hi. Is It possible to change the frequency color instead of the default white ?
Not at this time. I wish you could. I also wish you could change the background to more than black or the horrible blue.
@@SouthernIllinoisShortwave Thank, I agree for the background, too
Glad you're doing better. Sad news about MFJ. We had a local AES (Amateur Electronic Supply) in the 80s and 90s that I bought all the gear from. It closed its doors in the early 2000s. I guess it just a sign of the times
Thank you for letting us know. Hope you are felling 💯 soon!
Thanks for the info. I had not heard about the WWVB antenna damage. Get well soon.
