NCVS Insights 2(4): Anatomy of a Spectrogram
This video was developed for the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS). It provides a brief explanation of how spectrograms are constructed as a collection of individual spectra from consecutive points in time across a speech waveform. The difference between “narrow-band” and “wide-band” spectrograms is also explained based on choice of analysis window duration. Three-dimensional animations of waveforms, spectra, and spectrograms are used throughout the video to demonstrate spectrographic representations of sound.

This is a source-filter demonstration of the word "Iowa". It includes time-varying spectra of the filter (transfer function) and output pressure. In addition, the time-varying vocal tract shape is shown. Note that the source spectrum is constant in this case which leads to monotone output sound, but modified by the changing vocal tract transfer function.

This is a source-filter demonstration that includes time-varying spectra of the source and output pressure. In this case the vocal tract is stationary, hence, it doesn't move and consequently the transfer function does not change.
