they gather like lofty clouds and soon after vanish like mist (dystopian tanuki study + commentary)
うんしゅうむさん【雲集霧散】
雲や霧が集まり散っていくように、多くのものが集まっては消えていくこと。
Hello hello been awhile, I myself hadn't logged into this account in awhile too,,
I've been doing stuff in the background, and quite a few I can't publish yet.
In the interim today, I'm showing a piano piece I did on stream like a few days ago that I'm kinda proud off. While I've known dystopian tanuki's music for a long while now, I've recently been re-listening to them on and off, to get my fix of goooood piano music. Their music have this ethereal quality that actually hard to describe but it's good. This is also the same as their inspiration, Kashiwa Marumochi (かしわ丸餅 ) who is really underrated!
Please listen to them when you can.
Both of them are masters in piano playing and has years of experience behind the keys, while I do not lmao. Poor jazz-ish improv is the most I could do and it's not like I didn't want to practice more it's just the time commitment is too much. Howeverrr, I do know some theory and this song also serves as a test of my theory knowledge in an imitation attempt.
With that too, this video has commentary on my thought process on composing it, especially in terms of harmony. It's a bit rambly though, or maybe its fine idk, writing it was stressful so please don't expect me to do many of these in the future. But I do hope it serves someone out there in understanding chords as it is daunting and a lot of commentary and tutorials are just straight up bad and over-extended.
Sorry if there's some factual errors though do tell me!
In the end though I guess it's up to you if you think I got some of the ethereal quality or not, I'm not sure myself might be the impostor syndrome talking, but I like the end results.
And enjoyment in what you work on is important, regardless of how it turns out, so that whatever you got from the experience would always be a net positive.
Piano is Noire. (I underestimated this piano before but now it is slowly one of my favorites!)
More music to come, take care of your health gang.

Hi, welcome back! Thank you for watching. touhou-project.news/news/11292/ ZUN had announced a new Hifuu album just recently, 七夕坂夢幻能 〜 Taboo Japan Disentanglement, and I'm shaking with excitement. It has been 8 years since the last one. This song is part of a stream that I did around two days ago in CnD where I challanged myself to compose a sketch of a Touhou-style track in one hour. I managed to get to 2/3rds of the so...

Helloooo, small upload today. Tried to imitate Shogo Nomura's piano works (th-cam.com/play/PLsUKJquOFU5zNogxw_9kk9-qyitq2fGwK.html) , which are mystical and really beautiful. For me at least. Beauty is always at the eye of the beholder, so yeah, I hope this piece is cool for yall! Chords this time are rough approximations, yeah. An imitation of ZUTOMAYO and their wonderful music. One of my goals as a composer was to always try to imitate the style of Zutomayo, their unique take on J-pop and J-rock is very earworm and captured the hearts of many. This took a long time to make and a lot of fumbling around, experimenting. Consider this like a pseudo-love letter to Zutomayo's music. It is in no way the same level of qualit...

A bit low effort this time, but hey it's been ages since I've arranged a song for real. I have very fond memories of Gates To Infinity, I think it's the best PMD plotwise. I've always wanted to try making an orchestral track, whether it be film based or more VGM based (ie Octopath Traveler). It is just so daunting with a lot of parameters that you have to keep in mind. Not much to say other than I had fun with this...

I just spent a good 30mins trying out stuff to your subtitles haha I LOVE when composers put them in but you actually made it extremely fun to play around with them. There's a lot of stuff I'd comment (like yeah us being addicted to the #vi scale degree and I've actually noticed that past songs that I loved as a child had those too) but there's just too much haha Now when my workload will deflate I'll be extra motivated to try to do some more compLex harmony (but probably with more repetition lol, I like that) Tysm for the video!!!
Have fun on the harmony grind! 💪
@@tempura-ocha HECK yeah we're not letting studies delete my limited composition skills
The piece sounded beautiful, and I loved reading your commentary. It was very insightful and educational, and it's always nice to get to know more about a composer's thought process. When you mention how midiChordAnalyzer doesn't have m7b5 and sees it as an inversion instead, that reminded me about how apparently Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and other musicians from that era of jazz thought of the m7b5 chord as a minor triad with the 6th in the bass or an inversion of a min6 chord. Then later on, people started calling it m7b5, and I guess a lot of people also call it half-diminished now. 雲も霧も散り 消え去ってゆく 然れどもやがてまた雲合霧集するであろう 😊
Thank you! looking back it's a bit disjointed in my eyes but hey glad ya got some insight haha Speaking of insight, I actually never knew that jazz musicians of that time considered it as an inversion of min6 wowie, but it makes so much sense especially in the context of Barry Harris' method where in his minor 6th diminished scale, it naturally appears as a chord tone! And I believe he was inspired deeply by Thelonious Monk. Thank you for telling me this, the more you know!
Very nice!
will try putting these spicy chords in a DAW when I get time. Thank you for taking your time making this
love the meandering melodies over the deceptive progression at 2:36. manages to feel both carefree and tense if that even makes sense lol
I have to say that this is even better than the official version, and that one is my favorite in the album so... big kudos to you! I can't stop listening to this~ beautiful chord progressions and production
Nice Touhou Soundfont style cover of the song, and it’s super fitting since the song was the inspiration for Girl’s Secret Room!😄🤩😎👌
this is one of my favorite touhou-style tracks!!! i'm not sure how to put it into words but i think it's very addicting, sounds a little bittersweet too... :_) this is wonderful!!!
私ほんとにこの曲大好き…! I realy love this music …!
1:30 my favorite moment
Really doesn't seem like ZUN will make a follow up album this time around huh. Glad this absolute beauty is still as good as I remember it to be. That ending major part is still peak 🙏
How did I only stumble upon this a year later...? Anyway, uhh, I wish I had the vocab to explain why I like this a lot.... Sadly, I do not lol, so I guess i'll try and cough up my words. I really like when this thing happens 0:19 (yeah, sorry I don't know anything, lol)
Hello! I’m a huge fan of the way you go about arranging things and I just wanted to ask something: What are the main VSTs/plugins I should get to produce Touhou-esque music? It’d be helpful if you could list the important ones. Thank you! <33
Oh no so sorry in not responding to this, geniunely didn't log on in awhile dashddasa ;-; First you would need to ask in what style you want to do, since different eras of ZUN has different VSTs, I'd believe you better consult this doc made by good friends, docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1S6LNDa2HR0OioQpbNQ6yR28Nl-d9WbSNaWq7mSRI_1g/edit?usp=sharing You can go to the composer's equipment page and see what's ZUN has been using over the years, it's a hefty list. However, I don't know your skill level but in the chance that you're starting out, I would suggest practice first by getting Hyper Canvas (It has some of SD-90's classic set and would be a decent start) and not too focused on hoarding VSTs. Best of luck!
now that's some complicated stuff and it's damn beautiful! I have a looooot to learn
Like this one more than the original made by ZUN. Great job !
After some research, I can somewhat understand the title, Bell's theorem, originally Bell's inequality. The intent is to prove that quantum mechanics's reality is wrong, and there must be a hidden variable that makes quantum entanglement work... Quantum mechanic's reality is that reality comes after observation, observation decides what it is, compared to the objective, local realism classical physics believed it's nonsensical. Quantum experiments are hard to achieve, but they still did it, turns out, Bell's inequality is false, and it instead proved quantum physics' world even more. You believed, then it exists, that's just fantasy. A world where fairies exist when you believe, and die when you no longer…
Come to think of it, the title might even refer to the "Tinkerbell Effect".
Its so chaotic, but the chaotic good mix that all the elements feel like a cacophony of shadows dancing around, its hard to explain it but it just hits perfectly
your music makes me want to learn more about music theory so that i can appreciate it on a deeper level than i already do
Are there any free or cheap VSTs available in Toho style?
i really love this! incredible chord work... 日本から応援しています。❤
How in the world is the mixing in this so utterly perfect
I kept meaning to comment this but just talking on discord now reminded me, I absolutely love this track ocha, and I think its definitely one of your best to date!
The beautiful piano phrases are so wonderful!Lovely Touhou Style!Thank you!
Thank you! I love your music and Dreams in Parallel Phantasia! ❤
So, now that the real thing is out, how do you feel? Because i think its one of ZUN’s best cds, and the general consensus is also that but what do you think? In the 2 days its been out, i’ve already gotten addicted to the themes, so there’s my thoughts.
It's now around 5 days since release and yeah this album is amazing yes! ZUN shines as a musician through his albums when he has more time to polish and work on it. It sounds very live-played in a sense and there's some cool experimentation ie Tinkerbell, chord progressions, tldr it's very cool. I've been constantly using it as my HW music. My personal favourite is still Trojan Green Asteroid, and the rest I can't really rank since I like all the ZUN albums LOL
@@tempura-ochawell my favorite is dipp because you cant beat truly old classic ZUN and the 2nd is possibly a tie between ma and tjd, with ntoj being in 3rd, and my favorite song ZUN has ever made is legend of hourai: beautiful and oriental ZUN? and there’s great rhythm and a piano run? Well all my boxes have been checked What’s yours?
@@cchieffkiefbeff Can't choose! All of them are so so good
@@cchieffkiefbeff Legend of Hourai just hits different man... RCS's first track is probably my second favorite because it has similar vibes. By the way what did you think about the other tracks? As with friends we react to the tracks every night when everyone's here so I had to stop at track 3
(this is a condensed version of my original comment because it didnt save) *caveman voice* cd good, many song good, that all me have, me not good at talk about me feeling, me want more, me want more zun flavor (the power always in touhou music keeps you coming back and makes you addicted), not many in here cd, but that not bad thing, but me want more zin flavoor *cough* so lets hope that the summer comiket cd (theres bound to be one unless zun is really willing to break that norm) keeps on the roll this one started but also is full of touhou loli power (zun flavor, touhou spice) that this one is kinda lacking (please ZUN make the next CD like Magical Astronomy with at least 7 originals and only 3 arranges, I’ll be honest the originals are what I come here for, the arrangements are nice but unless they’re *BIIIG* (kinda like Magical Astronomy (heh) or these ones sort of) I’m not that interested)
I love the sense of atmosphere created here. It sounds like it could be on the album and if I'm being honest after listening to this and the real one I like this one more, seriously great work
あーあ、Apparitions Abound Even Outside of Nightで確定したのか ブックレット見たらこのタイトルの本当の意味わかるのにほんとつっかえ 海外東方フォーラムの翻訳のセンスなさすぎるだろ
I love this one much better than the original 😊 amazing job!
upon the reveal, i'm pretty amazed by how you nailed the tone after all! dark and experimental, in such a delectable way. i stand by my previous comment - i'm adding this to my playlist like it was an extra song since it fits the story so much.
I wanted to come back and comment after I heard the revealed version. Thought it was only fair then to make my comment. Your version..It’s a real spot on prediction for the tone of the album, even if the end result was drastically different. I did like ZUN’s version a lot but I think I prefer this one more, after reading the story. It’s a dreamy and romantic song with dreadful undertones, something that the story made clear from the start. Fantastic. 20/10.
Deeply appreciate it, glad people are enjoying this still lmao the real song was so weirdd I love ZUN experimenting a lot
I like the legit version, but this one is good too
this song is filled with so much character
the jazz style like chords playing theme of eastern story is crazy good
It's SO GOOD I feel like ZUN will never really use chords as complex as those, as this is literally jazz at this point but since I love jazz I can't complain. It also gives me a lot of study material for my chord progressions bruh Anyway those last piano arpeggios are... wow.
Hell yeah! Jazz appreciation lets goo, god you have no idea how it makes me smile that the chord notation helps other musicians, thank you for enjoying it!
@@tempura-ochaYes, the chord notation is AMAZING!!! I don't even make music, but having studied a bit of music theory in order to understand chord functions, I cannot tell you how cool it is to see the chords in real time! It's so helpful for identifying fun progressions and talking about them with other fans, I can't thank you enough for adding them in your vids!
@@-butterfly-594 I had to rewind when I saw that #III chord _what is that_
NO WAY YOU MADE ANOTHER ONE I'm worried that you are making my expectations higher :///
the textures and chords are so splendid. big fan of the climax i think it genuinely counts as major in my mind
major beloved
this is really amazing woah..i can imagine something like this. Im so excited for TJD
Oh my, it sounds so good!!! :0
ONLY 17 COMMENTS? Alright. I've been listening to this quite a lot since it came out, and YT keeps recommending it to me as it knows that lol. Frankly, if ZUN used chords are beautiful as those I'd be the happiest man alive. And as a fellow composer who learnt a lot from ZUN, I'm jealous of your mixing. I'm definitely lacking those. PS 1: I'll be holding you accountable if I'm disappointed in the album btw lmaooo. PS 2: god I hope ZUN reuses erhu in that album. He's the reason I bought a VST of it and used it in like 4 songs now.
this whole song is amazing and i ESPECIALLY love that modulation from d# to g min AGHHHH
this prediction is soooo good, love the lead and everything so much
What a wonderful arrangement! I absolutely love it! Definitely going into the playlist, whether or not it ends up close to the album version or not- Great job!
I suspect Tinkerbell of Inequality is actually a mistranslation of the song title and it’s actually supposed to be Tinkerbell Inequality, as a play on the bell inequality of bell’s theorem-bell inequality in japanese is ベルの不等式 which is fairly similar
I suspected that too! but opted to use touhouwiki's translation of the title, which usually is defacto standard for better or for worse lol
"The extremes in [Tinkerbell's] personality are explained in the story by the fact that a fairy's size prevents her from holding more than one feeling at a time, so *when she is angry she has no counterbalancing compassion.* " - Wikipedia on the first iteration of Tinkerbell
