I remember as a kid going into a store and feeling like, genuinely stressed out about if I’d get something or not. Kids instinctively want to make sure they get adequate attention and resources from their parents, bc from an evolutionary standpoint, that’s really helpful! Sometimes offspring DONT get equal or adequate attention, across the animal kingdom. It’ll be hard at first, and he probably won’t get it for a bit, but maybe try setting expectations at the beginning of the shopping trip? And then follow through! Also, bring him a toy to the store! I literally did that for myself as an adult on a trip to a zoo or something. Brought a little something cute so I didn’t feel as much of a need to buy something there. It worked! I think a lot of it comes from when kids start to realize they’re their own people, but they don’t actually have much agency in their lives. Scary stuff. So work in lots of choice for him! Do you wanna ride or walk? Cheerios or fruit loops? What do you think a fruit this color would taste like? What do you want for dinner? Are you big enough to help mom grocery shop? Are you strong enough to hold this box of cereal? You could even let him “shop” for his grocery buddy each time, or have a specially designated stuffy that comes to the grocery store! They see you shopping and getting stuff you want (or at least in their mind that’s what’s happening), and they want in on it, too!
