I didn't see a response to the Water Heater Question. Does the Suburban Water Heater need to be drained or is it blown out when you turn the facets to hot and blown out? Also any answer re: the water pump?
your welcome. you almost convinced me to rethink the basecamp. I'm back forth with the caravel I don't like crawling out the bed. Just wanna swing my legs over and get up out the bed. But I like the bathroom in the Caravel and food prep space. Hate to buy one and wish I got the other. I live in Jersey and east coast not to much ruff terrain. Skyline drive in VA ain't like the BLM's in Nevada or Utah. No what I mean. the only ruff ground are rodeo ranches I attend.

Thank you for this video. I’m seriously looking at a base camp and am doing as much research as I can to make sure that I make an informed decision on which trailer will serve my needs. It’s a pretty penny to drop even on a used one, and knowing what I’m getting and having as few ‘ surprises’ as possible is my focus. Overall it seems that folks who have a base camp are very happy with them, I’m weighing that in my decision. Just a helpful tip. Don’t forget to cross your tow chains.
Great videos ! What year is your camper?
2022 Basecamp 20X. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
We have 2 airstreams. One is the Basecamp 2018 BC16 and the other is a vintage 75 Excella. We never use antifreeze in either of them and we live in Canada. The only additional thing we do with the basecamp after we blow out the lines is remove the water pump. We dry camp in the winter so no need for the pump and we had an issue with it the first year after winterizing and had to replace. Not sure if it was due to water freezing but we did not want to take the chance so easier to remove it. Love the videos, thank you!
@@michellestuck1785 hey thanks for watching! And for the comment. Next fall I’m gonna do another winterizing video and incorporate some of these thoughts in that video. Thanks again.

totally agree. nice video
@@Mike-tr5eb thank you for watching. And for the comment!
Here's another. Replace the cheap ass factory thermostat with a much more accurate digital. First "mod" I did on mine before the trailer started falling apart.
I almost bought a Basecamp 19, but went with the InTech Sol Horizon Rover in the end, and am very glad I did. On the surface, the cushions on the dinette are way thicker than the mat-like things that are in the Basecamp. The Horizon has actual storage instead of hanging rungs, and is much more furnished for comfort- period. The Horizon is a welded aluminum construction, with fiberglass side and full fiberglass top that won't get ruined in the first hail storm. Watch videos of the Horizon metal build process alone vs the Basecamp is at least comparable to the Basecamp, if not superior. I'm sitting in my Horizon now on my 55th day in the mountains and loving it. ALL FOR $20K LESS!
I’m happy you found the right trailer for you. There is a lot to like about the Intech Sol. Safe travels! And thanks for watching.
It's got some neat features, but the 2022 that I had would not hold up to doing what it was designed to do. It was literally falling apart. Charging $65K, Airstream should have been embarrassed. They couldn't care less. Try to get warranty work done? Fuggeddaboutit. My ownership experience with the Basecamp 20X was dismal. Never again.
@@aaronbrown6266 that stinks. I hope you find a trailer that suits your needs.
@@StreamDreamin Nope. Ruined me. I will never own another one.
Good job on your videos, I watched your winterize video and thought I would point out adding some RV antifreeze into the sink drain and the toilet bowel lubricating the seal.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I'm going to amend the winterization video to include that step. Thanks again.
Thank you for sharing. I am picki g up our first travel trailer this weekend and your video made me pickup the andersen hitch in preparation. Here is to hoping it works well on my 24 nissan pathfinder rock creek!!
Thanks for watching! You'll love it. Stay tuned, there's a lot more to come.
Traps need a cup of antifreeze.
Do you have the model etc for the cooktop? The suburban one drives me crazy😊

Interesting comparison - thanks for posting! We've had our InTech Sol for more than 5 years and really love it. That locked outdoor storage on the door side houses a fabulous outdoor kitchen - one of our favorite features along with the spacious dinette and huge front window.
It also sounds like you are just blowing air through the heater also and not draining it ?
Spent the last five hours trying to make this work on my 16 base camp. It sure looked easy so I tired it over the pain of the anti freeze system. Rented a good compressor, got a good fixture, drained all the water. I got air through the hot water in the sink, the toilet and the shower...but the cold water in the sink is still spiting up an 1/8 to a 1/4 cup of water spiting every time I put pressure to it and then open it up. Tried it for 5 minutes at a time for maybe 20 times and it still is spitting water. I cannot figure out where it is coming from. Am I doing something wrong?
@@tapadog1941 I have a 20x but the plumbing layout is similar. Does the water come out on the hot or cold side? My suspicion is the hot water tank is not fully drained. And, I believe on the 16 you should close it off before blowing it out. It’s a gravity drain.
@@StreamDreamin most of the water is coming out of the cold side. A little out of the hot but just a dribble. Thanks
@@tapadog1941 Here’s an idea. With the compressor hooked up, open your tank drain valve. At one point, mine was obstructed. To clear it, I opened the valve and rushed air in through the exit as it were. This cleared the obstruction and I haven’t had it since. If you hear hissing and no water comes out, you’ll know the tank is empty. There’s only three places that water can come from: the tank, the lines, or the hot water heater.
The Truma system has a drain for the hot water heater. It’s kind of hidden under some of the other pipes, but it’s a yellow tab that you lift. There’s also a bypass for that trim my hot water heater. Make sure the hot water heater is drained and then you can shut the flow off to the hot water heater as well.
Very honest & fair review

Base camp is garbage. Mine leaks. I’ll never buy another airstream product.
Sorry to hear that. Most problems in life have a solution and a leaky Basecamp definitely has a solution. Get it fixed. Basecamps are not perfect but they are not garbage. Multi million dollar homes sometimes leak and they aren't hauled down the road. Nothing we make or build is perfect. I've had a couple interactions with my local dealer, and the Mothership and found both to be genuinely helpful and eager to solve the issue. Best of luck to you.
Love your videos. I am looking forward to making a few mods to our Basecamp. When I do the bed slat modification, I also want to have the storage side modified so that I can open the storage lid without needing to double fold the lid. Not sure what my solution will be yet, but looking forward to the project. Thanks for the sharing you work. It is very motivating!
@@earlalderson6750 that’s awfully nice of you to say. Thank you. I thought about that lid as well. There might be a way to make that second hinge fold under the primary board and then just attach to the primary board. I’m on the same page with you here. That would be a nice change.

Great video. It's something I've wanted to do for a while. Two more weekends of camping this season. When I winterize the trailer if a few weeks I'll be doing this mod. Thanks for the excellent explanation.
Had any wear of the friction cone? I've done 18,000km with it on our previous caravan, transferred to our new one, noticed swarf around the top plate, and that the ball that turns easily in the housing. Supplier is sending me a new cone. Hopefully it lasts a bit longer this time. Great improvement over the solid bar type WDH, plus anti-sway. Slightly lighter too.

I like your videos I would like to know what is the weight of your trailer and what do you pull it with? I am thinking about buying a 2018 airstream Bambi I have a Toyota Tacoma and I can pull 6000 pounds I was wondering how much does your base camp airstream weigh and what are you pulling it with? Thanks so much keep up the good work, my name is Miguel. I’m from Cape Coral Florida.
@@mojimx1116 thanks Miguel. My Basecamp weighs about 4000 pounds with all the gear and everything in it. I pull it with a BMW X5 it has a towing capacity of 7200 pounds. And it does just fine. Excellent. I’ll have a video coming up on that shortly. Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words.
You didn't show the inside. We saw a couple this summer, no thank you!
Very fair comparison... If a used Base Camp hadn't come along when I was buying in early 2020, I would have bought a SOL Horizon.
@@mikestone9839 Thanks for watching and for the comment. What do you like? Best about your Airstream Basecamp?
@@StreamDreamin I've got a 2019 Basecamp 16X and I'm with you on the black out curtains... I do sometimes want to sleep during the day and they work great. I've taken it into some tight spots that other trailers would not have gone without damage done to them. I love the Truma Combi furnace / hot water heater. The fact that you can run it on electric without water is great. Very versatile. The back hatch is convenient, I've used it for hauling my bike before I added a hitch reciever and a bike rack. The other thing I like is the AC unit 9600 BTU unit will work with a 2000 or 2200 watt generator without an easystart. I did not like the solar charger they had in it, so I replaced it and then later on installed a couple of Battleborn 100AH heated batteries. Because of the size of the batteries I gave up some storage space under the sink area for the batteries and a 2200 WATT inverter. I really like the counter space of the kitchen area. To help with ventilation at night, I made a screen that fits in the bathroom hatch for the shower head to go outside. Having that open with the screen in place the the main exhaust fan hatch open with out the fan running allows a nice flow of air to come through.
The Sol's climb over bed killled it for us. Hate to admit that the Basecamps utilitarian style was probably the deciding factor: it just feels like camping. The Sol is a great trailer though.
@@scotturner3178 thanks for watching and for the comment. I agree completely.
If you can deal with 20” longer trailer you can get twin 80” beds on the Sol Dusk
I've been looking at the Intech as well because there is a price point( about 10k) difference. But, like you said, the Basecamp is more versatile (mini-toyhauler) and has a better suspension for iffy roads. Still leaning towards the Airstream but I did give the Intech a hard look at the dealer.
@@Bruce-da-Roamer thanks for watching and for the comment. There’s a lot to like about the Intech Sol. The Airstream Basecamp though is in a class by itself.
what about residual water in the pump?
That's a valid question. I reached out to the manufacturer on Thursday--prior to your question posing--but the tech guy hasn't gotten back to me yet. I will follow up with an additional response next week. In the meantime, I did used this method all winter last year without any issues. Yes, it could be a series of happy coincidences. Which is why I reached out to the manufacturer but my sense is the water pump is mounted on a slope which sets it up to drain naturally once the line is clear. More to follow.
@@StreamDreaminany updates yet? Thanks
@@toolonthehill no. Darn it. In fairness though, I’ve been traveling a lot and haven’t had cell service for much of my travels. I’ll be back on Monday and I’ll reach out to him again.
@@StreamDreamin ok. Thanks. I’m new to this trailer, just saw stuff about a propane heater back up to the pump so it won’t freeze up, on an antifreeze winteriza tion video. Was concerned about that. Safe travels!

Tape and dope the fitting.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I'm not looking for a fight, but I don't think that's good advice. The factory install did not use either and prior doing this video I checked with several qualified sources, none of which recommended either. In fact, just the opposite. Here's a synopsis: When using a flared fitting on a copper LP gas line, you should not use pipe dope or silicone tape. Flared fittings create a seal by the mechanical compression of the fitting, which presses the flared end of the copper tubing against the fitting, forming a tight, gas-proof seal. Adding pipe dope or silicone tape could interfere with this sealing process and potentially cause a leak. Just ensure that the flared fitting is clean, properly aligned, and tightened according to the manufacturer's specifications.
My issue is the non-functional bathroom. Too small and you trip because you can’t turn around.
@@Erin-Thor I had that experience with the 16 foot Basecamp. Not so much with the 20 foot Basecamp. Thanks for lunching
