The funny thing is Buddy Israel is already dying before the hitman showed up - he's overdosing but it doesn't matter because he's a heart transplant donor but that doesn't matter either because the plug gets pulled on him. Anyway you look at it he was a dead man.

Imo, Buddy’s scene shows the dichotomy of his character gift and flaws as one. He’s an illusionist, his job (and he says it later on) is to make people see what he wants them to see: a successful top bill Vegas show act and mafioso but really he knows he’s a degenerate and a “fake” gangster who bit off more than he can chew. Imagery of the colored contacts lenses show that perfectly. Love this underrated movie.
