    I noticed when watching Suicide Squad that the camera never seems to focus too much on the bodies of the male characters who are also changing like Harley is. Sexualize characters equally.

    from the 3 "problematic" shots, only the one where she is a the doctor is doesn't have a real point behind it and even with that, they are showing that there might be something behind the uniform or even that she might be dressing up because she is secretly attracted by the Joker. in the club, her and joker are playing their sick little game of luring mens attention and than scaring them shitless. the shot of her changing and than acting offended when people look, it leaves people wondering if it wasn't in fact an intentional display. or its just a funny moment where we get to laugh at the men who end up oggling her, aka making fun of the male gaze itself. but how dare we believe that in the latter 2 shots its a grown woman who knows exactly what she is doing and enjoys doing it? better claim she "lacks agency" so we can demonise the male gaze or whenever a man dares to enjoy a womans presence. the scene where she brakes a guys legs is a typical example of female logic. someone has a disproportionally violent response to something, therefore that makes them powerful. well it doesn't since people who have such a reponse are usually weak.

    Another thing i find really neat about the introductory shot of BOP is that Harley is, seemingly very deliberately, walking on top of the line of the floor tiles, as if working on a fine line or doing a balancing act. If you choose to read into this image you can infer characteristics about Harley, as opposed to the Suicide Squad counterpart, where all the information we can get about the character being introduced is ''sexy''

    Look, I personally don't like the movie. It's meh. The cinematography was good, but they way the movie handle characters like Victor Zsasz and Cassandra Cain was a major turn off and completely disrespectful to the source material. Along side the fact that this cannot be called a Birds of Prey movie. Really, they should have gone for a Gotham Sirens movie instead. It would have made more sense for Harley to be hanging around Selina Kyle and Poison Ivy instead of heroes that would gladly throw her into Arkham Asylum.

    It wasn't just subverting the male gaze. Every male character was terrible and every female character was fabulous and every story thread seemed to conclude with a man being completly humiliated by a woman. I wanted the role of Harley Quinn to go to nobody except Kat Dennings because she reminds me of the Arkham-verse version of the character (mainly by looks). Margot Robbie's depiction on the other hand felt like a cosplaying imitation of Harley Quinn, great actress but she didn't embody the character.

    I would like to first preface this by saying I agree with much of what you said. Many men today over-sexualize and objectify women, which is awful. But I enjoy playing devil's advocate. What if what men actually care about are values? For instance, a slim woman, compared to an obese woman, shows the slim woman values modesty and does not overindulge in pleasure through gluttony. It shows one's ability to delay gratification. Why do we automatically assume men are superficial? Now, there is one thing I won't deny. Men have objectively become more lustful with the advent of technology and pornographic means. Social media has made beauty standards, on both sides, higher. Who is guilty? Both are equally guilty and need to assume responsibility through becoming better people. Become less superficial, less sinful, and more cooperative. But that's just my opinion.

    I wonder what would have happened if both films had swapped directors. In suicide squad she is in a toxic relationship with the Joker and appears to mostly want to please other people despite her crazy rebellious personality. Then in birds of prey she has broken free and become her own person. If a woman had directed suicide squad and a man directed bird of prey, do you think it would be more justified for her to go from sexy slave to badass antihero? Or do you think the character would have gone backwards (eg have more free will in suicide squad and then get sexualised in bird of prey) I do agree that men tend to sexualise women in film, but sometimes that IS their character or the start of their arc. I’m a straight male, so I’d be interested to see how women agree or disagree.

    So after listening to this video and seeing the feminist theory behind the “male gaze”, I can confidently say this “male gaze” theory is a load of bull💩. My question to you feminists is, if the male gaze is so bad, why do women use it to benefit them financially? Why not just protest it until it’s completely rid off from humanity? Simple answer to that is women love to deny accountability.

    Hey Mollie I was thinking a lot about your video the last few days after watching the Barbie movie (Harley Quinn again). Even though the movie had a some good points in the plot (there were big mistakes too) I feel like the man who SHOT the sequences behind the camera made it very much the male gaze. It shocked me a lot. The first 10 minutes were basically just Barbies legs and feet. And yes some people will come after me "But they wanted to make a point with...." NO. In one scene around the 7th Minute we follow Barbie legs in a few seconds that were just sooo weird, the camera moving upward and even 3 Kens watching in the backround. Then the camera moves up her butt as she walks away on the beach. My point is NONE of the Kens were filmed this way. The plot was made for targeting the mainstream. But the plot was more 'trying' to be feminist and progressive (not even showing any queer couples etc. but that is another point) and the gaze was definetly MALE. I would really be interested in your opinion :)

    I’m a straight woman and I don’t understand this “gaze” distinction. I find many male characters attractive, like Thor. Moreover, there are attractive men in Magic Mike, so to me, whatever I find attractive is the male gaze. Sure I like many romantic stories like Titanic, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admire some male eye candy. Are we seriously pretending that women don’t find men attractive? These definitions are so nebulous that they are rendered meaningless. People just find other people attractive based on their sexual orientation. Point blank. Period.

    • @baligong3592
      @baligong3592 ปีที่แล้ว

      Male Gaze is the Physicality Female Gaze is the Emotionality Some people crosses over, most do not. That's why an Art from Men are done with the Physical parts highlighted, which can lead people to complain about Men sexualising Women. While Art from Women are done with Emotional Meaning behind it, which is also why they would have a softer colour pallette or even have things more bright even if grim (like Harley Quinn killing People while having Flowers flowing everywhere).

    • @baligong3592
      @baligong3592 ปีที่แล้ว

      @stevethebrave You're stating Exceptions. That's the same if I were to say "Women love Make-Up, and Men love Suits and Ties". Some would obviously not like that, but 20% isn't the Majority. It's 2023, People Label everything. Don't hate the Player, hate the Game.

      @baligong3592 ปีที่แล้ว

      @stevethebrave Smh why did you click on the video if you were going to get mad over the answer? I think it's even more silly to do that. It's like how liking women is considered a Guy thing. Do all guys like women? No. Some guys prefer other guys, but most guys do. Vice versa. When a Guy looks at a Girl in a Movie, male gaze would be for their physicality. what they look like, their chests, buttocks, and other factors in physical appearance are at play. When a Girl looks at a guy in a Movie, their physical appearance do not play so much of a role, but rather who they are as well, and how they're presented. Such reasons are also why Guys would like to look at someone with insane muscle depth, while also being confused why Girls are loving someone like Park Ji-min Justin Bieber or Robert Pattinson. Also, no one's trashing anything; You liking Juice doesn't mean you hate Soda. I hope I made things clear for you to understand

      @baligong3592 ปีที่แล้ว

      @stevethebrave "Clearly the Harley in the birds of pray have all that and yet despite all that she's very unlikable and unattractive in many guys eyes. if it's really like you said all the guys must be praising Harley in this film just as much as they did the first film but it's the opposite." In trying to disprove me, you just shot yourself in the foot. "all the guys must be praising Harley Quinn [in birds of prey] like in the first film, but it's the opposite" and Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan, shows why women love Harley Quinn. The First Film is directed by David Ayer. Scenes like Quinn releasing from Prison in Suicide Squad is aimed for Men, not Women. You have questions, and you come looking for answers, only to retaliate with passive aggression with lines like: - "you can't tell me with a Straight Face" - "I'm talking about Fully Developed Women" - your reaction to Birds of Prey Harley - and you trying to act as if I said "They don't like Physical Appearance" by mentioning Shirtless Henry Cavill. - and many more like in previous comments You want answers, correct? I gave them to you. You should also talk about this with Artists, Cinematographers, Marketing Agents, and other Women to understand and see exactly the case. Shirtless Henry Cavill is Hot, sure, but even he will be wearing a Shirt in advertising that's relating to women. If you're going to respond, please do so as if you're speaking to someone in front of you. I'm sure you wouldn't "Lol" at someone's face. Unless you're looking to verbally fight someone in some debate about this, I'd prefer if you'd say it instead.

  • @kingbash6466

    Pretty sure Harley had a character in the original Suicide Squad. She was unhinged psychopath who had a warped perspective of love and purpose thanks to the Joker's influence on her. The film was still terrible, and her character could be seen as being obnoxious, but the film having a gratuitous ass shot or midriff scene is the least of its issues. Besides, I still think BOP is a rather terrible example of being empowering for women when it practically turns the titular characters of the original comics into secondary, almost tertiary characters, literally cutting out the de facto leader, Barbara Gordon, out of the movie for what's basically Margot Robbie's vanity project. Don't even get me started on Cassandra Cain; that alone should be considered a hate crime. Also hot take: I just think the costumes in BOP are pretty trash. They feed into the "modern fashionistas will put literal garbage on themselves and call it beautiful" stereotype. Say what you want about SS Harley Quinn costume, but it is a pretty iconic look considering people still cosplay as that look to this day and even DC references it in other media. When was the last time you saw BOP Harley Quin get notoriety outside of Fortnite? Nobody's going around saying BOP Black Canary or Huntress have "great, iconic costumes" except diehard fans of this movie. There's a reason why fans couldn't recognize any of the characters from the comics outside of Harley.

    I feel like a better way to describe the male gaze is " camera shots and cinematography that focuses or emphasizes only the beauty of a woman's body." It's short and straightforward, but doesn't oversimplify. There are lots of ways to shoot a scene that can portray a woman as attractive without focusing on her body or ignoring her character, especially when you take into account what actions she's performing. It also helps demonstrate how movies may portray men as sexy, but don't objectify male characters the same way, because shots of male characters almost never disregard what's actually going on in the narrative or sacrifice the man's personality.

    5:39. I want to speak up and I want us all to speak up more about this because we cannot allow and we cannot keep continuing or normalizing or promoting even in the most subtle ways actions that validate the objectification and it validates the male gaze and all the other internalized and externalize factors that go into play with it can we please work together as women to stop doing this stop allowing this we can create films we can create movies we can create a whole new environment. Birds of prey is one of the very first and few examples of this. But because both male and female parties take part into the validation of the male gaze and objectification I noticed that it always goes back to an argument that that's just the way that men are and that there's nothing that can be done about it well that's not true that moment right there proves that there is a time where people can speak up anytime that a man looks at me I make sure to say something and tell them do not look at me because you have a family you probably have a wife you probably have a mother obviously so do not look at me in those terms and I always make sure to say because I am somebody's mother I am somebody's sister do not look at me in that way I don't care how innocent it may look in that scene at 5:38. I have noticed that men have learned to do it in such a subtle way where they can be completely completely objectifying a woman but they actually don't want her to notice they stare at her while she's working and it's uncomfortable but they would never actually admit that they like her why because they have more options it's so normal to them that it's like waking up and eating breakfast or drinking water it's just something that they do they don't really think about it when they're doing it they only have the thoughts of them doing it.. does that make sense ?? Anyways SPEAK UP !!!! DO NOT ALLOW IT OR PUT UP WITH IT ANYMORE IN ANYYY WAY , OR ANYY FORM. NOOO MATTER !!! HOW SMALL , inconvenient, subtle, or unnoticed it may seem. WE WONT DO THIS ANYMORE. And to be honest with you ladies if a man has a complete mindset that deems you for their desires which are completely off of the wall and unrealistic to be honest and there are other words that I could use for it too that y'all can imagine because quite honestly even when it's in the most subtle way it's completely disgusting and you guys know what I'm talking about when you guys have seen a man walk in that is clearly married and he's staring at people that he deems as attractive no matter if you actually knows if they are older or not it's disgusting. So please please please take up your strengths and do not feel bad about embarrassing them and yes it can be publicly that is someone that isn't feeling you in an innocent way and if it's not innocent well then what is it? So don't feel wrong don't feel scared don't feel bad don't hesitate speak up use your voice be articulate and assertive so you get your point across but make sure that you do not show that you are affected because men the other thing is isn't it crazy how men have some weird fetish with women being angry and they have some weird fetish with women being sad because they find it so cute I can even go into the ways that they do with the Kawaii Style we're being pouty and sad is cute apparently. Why because it resembles vulnerability which validates a certain males need for validation being wanted. Just be strong be completely yourself be bold and remain in truth with yourself and with your words and nothing can go wrong. If you stand in truth if you remain in truth if you walk in truth and if you speak in truth eventually you will find and you will Shine the Light and you will be that light everywhere you go which will then help others and other women that have been walking in the dark for so long and didn't even know it. We are no longer accepting or allowing cat calling as a form of approval or being noticed or compliments maybe because we feel good that day and we're wearing a really really good outfit we are no longer accepting people to stare at us because we are on grocery errands and to be honest I've seen it where it doesn't matter what your dressed as it doesn't matter if you have makeup on or not is simply comes down to the fact if you're a female you have a body and that's all that they view you as nothing more nothing beyond that a body that benefits them you have to take that into consideration a lot of guys like to greet pretty women but they won't greet women that they don't deem as attractive cuz they don't even notice that that person exists. Men do not acknowledge people that they do not think are pretty they don't even think that they are worth their time now the reason why a lot of women have a lot of pain hurt and insecurity is because everyone is pretty if we're being on it and if all they want is someone pretty well they're never going to be satisfied they're going to look at it and they're going to look at your flaws and they do compare you to other girls that they see on the social media the same way that you do and we know this but we don't talk about it and we don't speak about it and yet we wonder why there is a certain body type and we wonder why there's a certain hairstyle we wonder why there's certain clothes that just happened to fit our body types A little bit more snug don't they I find it so funny how they have those body wear suits for women but why don't they have that for men !!!! Like are you serious you're supposed to talk away your tummy your skin you're supposed to tuck away the little Parts underneath your arms no men don't do that men don't have to do that and if you guys even want to get deeper into it we need to have a whole entire topic on shaving because when you wake up naturally you were born with hair on your armpits you were born with hair on your legs you were born with hair on your other parts just the way and the same exact way that a male does but simply because males do not Dean that as attractive is the reason why every week or every other week you are sitting there shaving your legs and shaving your arms because in reality you now truly no longer feel feminine or soft or as pretty unless you don't have hair on your body.

      male objectification is nowhere near as prevalent or harmful as female objectification. Can it become a problem? Yes but we'll cross that bridge when we get there and for now we'll focus on more important things.

    Guys will demand that the male gaze be left in movies and television shows but throw a hissy fit when women swoon over Magic Mike. They’ll combat with “I have my preferences, get over it” but women are always the ones who have to be “good” discerning people, holy and sanctified with no desire for flesh. We’re not allowed to like height, tight muscles, tanned skin, a chiseled jaw, or strong, veined hands. We just have to like men for their “PErsOnAliTieS” 🙄
