Im also building a lathe/mill machine . Its no the first attempt , i have scrapped a few projects before due to the slide either being wobbly or too stiff . at first If i achieved vertical rigidity the theres up and down play and vice versa . Until a stroke of genius hit me... what i did was the following : I took Angle iron (30x30x3mm) , 2 lenghts of 500mm... these were welded to the same width square tubing , similar to what people to if they install sliding gates ... so these 2 parts got mounted to the frame on the insides , with the pointy sides towards each other resembling this( if you look at it from the side) : I> <I. next , i took 2 more lengths of the same angles positioned the same as the ones on the frame , I welded a flat plate in between these 2 angles looking tike this : >---< .. I hope you guys understand my vision. Anyway now the sliding table slots in between the sides of the frames, so we have the 1 pair of angles sitting flush in the other pair , no looking like this : I>>---<<I . This way the whole sliding assembly sits in a sort of a crosshair , providing maximum support in all directions . the cross slide can not turn left to right , cant rotate in any direction . cant lift or drop , and as an added bonus , this way i found has the least friction but yet still its stronger with less steel coz of structural integrity. In short , its kind of like a double dovetail.... next i must make the cross slide , tool post , screws , and handles. iFor the spindle , ill be using a heavy duty drill chuck untill i can afford a propper chuck. although the drill chuck is supported by wheel bearings from a car (press in type ) this is so that it is very rigid , allowing me to use the machine as a mill aswell. I make scale model replicas of cars etc and any lathe i can buy is either way to big for my hobby , or its way too small , same with milling machines and its all wway too expensive. I already have my drill press finished , plus im almost done with my angle grinder stand , it has a tilting boom for cut-off operations , as well as an angleand high adjustable rail to slide to either make long straight cuts or to cut grooves or slots and even steps... I have to say making these tools is far more difficult than i thought itr will be but also far more effective than i thought . !!!!!!! I love it .

Railroad track is something I considered using for a lathe bed. The basic shape is already there. Load capacity, it's a railroad track. It's not going to bend or twist as a lathe bed.

Nice! Love drill attachments, as it's better than lugging around dozens of specialized power tools. Give me 2 power units & lots of attachments!! :^)

Nice build and great re-cycle of the broken rivet tool. As for your brazing skills, I can only repeat the tipps/comments of some other fellows: you're starting brazing by far to early. Your burner has certainly enough temperature/power for the job (at least for such small parts), BUT you need to get the part to brazing temp first and only then start fluxing and melting the brazing rod. For steels a good indication for having reached brazing temp. is usually when the part starts to be of cherry red colour. If you start earlier, you only burn the flux and with that the flux is not working anymore at all. Then you get a so called "cold braze" with internal pollution of burned flux which consequently weakens your braze joint.

Good Idea. But using a weak spring. It bottoms out before you get all the twisting force needed. With a heavier spring, you can apply more force by hitting it harder. But does nothing if you dont hold it tightly, and let the twisting force, gear, do its job.
