Yea, found one of these sets lightly used with the Santa Fe scheme for 54 bucks. Not my favorite but I wanted a starter set with decent track and cars so I figure I can't go wrong with Athearn rolling stock and nickel silver EZ track. After research I think I'll be sticking with Bachman and Athearn for my track r, rolling stock and DCC .engines and controllers. The engines could have easily had a working headlight if there is a light in the cab.

Hi, I have this loco DCC sound equipped and faced same issues. The middle wheel set is not Ni silver. I think that this is failed loco from golden valley. Even they do not have spare parts as well.

That 2nd train... 5 cars after the lead locomotive and another locomotive... Wtf.. Never seen that before..

These locos are actually pretty ancient which is why in terms of detail it doesn't really hold up so well against more recent h0e/009 releases. They were "good" for the 1980s (I think) when they first appeared. Back in the day (late 90s) I picked up one of these on a visit to Pecorama, and it was a superbly smooth runner very easily capable of slow speed running. It seems nowadays Roco has gone very cheap with them, speccing rather coggy motors. This I believe is due to a reduction in the number of poles to save on cost. At any rate, Tramfabriek does an inexpensive coreless motor upgrade kit for these that will give a substantial improvement in running quality.

The wheels seem not Nikel silver. Lot of disconnections

I purchased this and it gave me nothing apart from trouble. It has some disconnections issues. Waste.

check screw on front wheel where connecting rod fits or slightly bend it away from the catching area .

Not having much luck are you? My thinking is that Hattons offered this pack at a bargain price because the loco has issues so they wanted to sell them off. The wagons are excellent though. Beware the box shifters, they have done this sort of thing before. Previous releases of the troublesome Electrotren 0-6-0 were also Golden Valley commissions I seen to remember. Like I said in the Electrotren video, your best bet for affordable OO is Hornby Railroad. They are not perfect and more expensive than they used to be but the running qualities are usually quite good. Cheers.

Useful video. I think there have been some mechanical/performance issues with previous releases of the same loco. A shame as it is an attractive and affordable little industrial ideal for my layout. They are still around new in 2021 at about the same price but seeing this I have decided not to bother and stick with Hornby Railroad! The bottom line is if it does not run well then it is not really worth buying no matter how good it looks or how low the price.

It is matchbox, they cut it down the center and removed a few millimeters of width and then rejoined the halves and applied a new roof hatch and a bonnet cover. In the hot rod business this is called "channeling"

I have a particular fondness for these as this was my very first Hornby model, given to me by my dad. Some time later, he took me to see the real thing up at the NRM too. Awesome machine.

I used to use these on regular basis in the seventies when I went potholing and exploring old leadmines I charged mine up with a car battery charger set at 6 volts with a old electric fire element as a resistor. Being from Derbyshire the lamps were easily got hold of. Splitting hairs on pronunciation Oldham is as the Lancashire town and not " old ham ". Cheers Grahame

Funny that you're having this problem because I've got a Peco insull frog point that's cos me problems with small locos stopping as they go over the point. I've been looking around and one of the solutions is to use a 'keep alive' solution where by you use a capacitor so store a small amount of power to keep the loco moving. Maybe a solution for you.
