30+ YEARS OF WILDLIFE GUIDING
The pulse of Africa beats wildest off the beaten track, around a remote desert campfire or out on foot. Under canvas. Meaningful big game encounters are a must. Alan McSmith runs artfully guided adventures exploring this Africa, one of lavish exhilaration and discovery.
NATURE IS A CORNERSTONE
The human experience cries for harmony with nature. For what the wilderness provides us, we should all be doing what we can to preserve it and nurture it, understand it. It will feed our very souls. Nature should not be a thing apart but a living comfort that feeds our inner being.

On trail, the intention is to immerse and plug-in to wilderness as meaningfully as possible. To tip-toe with respect and grace. Conscious and connected. Then every so often, a moment like this emerges. Empathy and understanding across a divide.

Specialist elephant safaris at Umlani Bushcamp

The safari may focus on elephant, but it's invariably about the sum of the parts. The slow pace and attention to detail provides us with clues about the whereabouts of other game. An alarm call, birdsong, or a sudden quiet in the air may be enough to alert us to leopard or lion, or even rhino.
Nature can create some distance between what we think, and what we think we think.

I believe that the greatest desire that drives or motivates a human being, and particularly within challenging times, is the desire for stillness. But with the pace of modern society, we are swamped by information and stimulation around us. We may mistake this instant availability for comfort or solace, or perhaps efficiency. We invariably then live either in the past (memory), or the future (i...

Was a lot of fun to appear on Russell Gammon's World Wildlife Journeys podcast. The topic? The wisdom of nature ... naturally. I actually didn't know that it was being filmed so I promise to sit still next time !! (There was a barred owl roosting outside my office window... sorry Russ). Russell is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced guides out there and it would be a thrill to soon be...

That elephant is going to get some crap from his buddies.
If I was there, I would back-hand that bull elephant until he understands who is boss.

This is as good as a spiritual seminar :) or better. I bow to you.
whats around his neck
The elephant is telling you to leave politely.
It shows they are intelligent animals. Anything stupid will run you over or be killed
Allan McSmith The next” Chuck Norris”!!! 😎
This man tells a woman to shut up and she obeys
Its like huma trying to shoo a street cat or a dog, but they couldn't care less
I noticed that when I focus more/enough with my senses, my head gets so filled with intake that the thoughts stop rattling. Ever since I learnt that, it's mostly quiet in my head, until I take my time to think. Connection to the outer world is for me a shortcut to zen, or is zen. Plus I both learn more and get more beauty. Get to know more of people. The interconnectedness I think gets greater when you notice where the other person's focus is. That is valuable.
Dude are you the guy who stopped the elephant in the past ?
Great work kid!
Complete badass!
Wow! The way that elephant made it look like he was just accepting the guide after the first charge then suddenly turns on the burners and charges again is so intimidating and shows us just how quick these marvellous creatures are. Full respect for the iron balls of that ranger who knows how to read the body language and stay alive. Wouldn't recommend this to others though eh 🫣
Why didn't he just take away its credit card?
I just stumbled on you and your work recently, and I feel so lucky that I did..... Learning from elephants, not about them: wow. This lines up with the wisdom I've heard from my favorite animal communicators. All of nature is saying, Learn about yourselves, honor yourselves, "and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man". And this kindness to each other leads to kindness to all things, all beings. Thank you for being a living example of what it means to be kind to self, and to all beings. 💚💚💚
In the 50ties..early 60ties my mother would get out of the car to watch the elephant herd..nothing happened..she had a way with animals... today a bunch of cars..many tourists on the sight...stressing the animals more...and..elephants remember..if they have encountered humans as violant and dangerous..they do not forget.
If this happened in sri lanka people tend to think this is a miracle of the god...then trying to worship of this man...😂😂.
Thank you so much for sharing this discussion. 👍
This is beautifully said. Thank you for sharing your appreciation for tracking and showing that fascinating lithic.
My mother has a way with wild animals.. she would get out of the car to look closer at a herd of elephants..they never showed agression... they must have sensed her aura.. that she loved them.
Elephants are gentle giants (unless provoked or in musth). I absolutely love and respect them. They are remarkable intelligent emotional creatures. The guide has experience and the elephants can sense his calmness.
C'est incroyable! Cet homme a un calme et une connaissance des éléphants. C'était Une situation dangereuse. J'adore! Merci!

Indeed u can't fool 30 years of experience - exemplary!
Bonjour Monsieur Alan. Je suis malheureusement tres pessimiste. Merci.
Monsieur, Votre communion avec la nature est admirable. Je ne trouve pas mes mots .
Je suis impressionnée , mais vraiment ! Je n’ai jamais vu de telles images...
Incroyable !
Can you even imagine having the sheer amount of testicles you would need for this? I would be shitting my pants cryiing on the floor in seconds
Wwoow🎉
We need to appreciate the camera man, he did not blink either!
That easy, huh. I will try this with a polar bear the next time.
Смелый мужик со стальными яйцами 🥚🥚
Respect on both sides. Great interaction wasn’t it. Me I would have turned round, slipped over on my arse and that would have been the end of me! 😅
Goddamn
This is original video that was cutandpaste several times.
That was amazing!
I would rather be a coward than risk getting squashed.
Impressive!
Some how the Elephant got the impression that he is charging a PT instructor & not a hunter or a PH . It lost its wits by kicking the bushes and dust out of sheer disgust & walked away😱🤔
ALAN, I AM PLEASED THAT YOU HAVE THE PRESENCE OF MIND TO BE IN CONTROL AND NOT SHOOT THESE ANIMALS EVEN IF THEY PROVOKED A LITTLE. THE ELEPHANT PROBABLY VIEWED YOU AS A FOREIGNER ON THEIR TERRITORY.

McSmith is lucky he's standing in front of the camera man. When dealing with tense situations like this one, there are 2 important rules: Rule #1: Camera man never dies. Rule #2: Never forget rule #1.
McSmith is a brave person and has intense knowledge about the elephant behaviour. It is not an eassy job to face a giant African elephant bare footedly and with just a thin wooden stick. Very few person can do this and McSmith is on of them.
