You know, every time I hear Will Smith yell this, it makes me tear up a little.

Random gripe at the KH writers/cutscene directors: couldn't Terranort just have been accompanied by a bunch of rando Heartless who could be in the background fighting all the characters who weren't doing anything during his whole killing spree? So it could be like they can see everything happening but they would still be prevented from interfering? Bleghhh

1:35:36 God seeing the old Kingdom Hearts 1 concept art kind of makes me feel robbed. The personalities on display were SO GOOD. WHY IS IT SO STIFF NOW?! WHY HAS IT ALWAYS BEEN STIFF?! I can't believe after over 20 years, Sora Riku and Kairi still haven't like, FOUGHT together, they've ALWAYS been like, missing one, or its like IMMEDIATLY interrupted. FUCK. But to be honest, I think its a kind of learning experience, so much wasted potential, but others are able to learn from it and make their own works that USE said potential. I still really like the art showing these three going on a journey and beating up heartless in their own distinctive ways. Using the keychain is such a cool idea. I like how Riku is graceful and like, kind of cocky because he's a talented fighter. Sora seems to learn as he goes, I see him as being an improviser, learning from the people around him and making his own styles. While Kairi is just batshit full power, she's scared but goes no holds barred because the enemies are freaky looking. Kind of like when you see a centipede in your house. Just hitting it until it dies. I really wish that Kairi from Kh1 kept her personality. Why the hell is she....DOMESTICATED now? She used to be spunky and goofy, and kind of aggressive, challenging her friends. She was like, the backbone of the group, keeping them all fired up and stable. Her genuinely laughing like its the happiest day on earth while the three race will always make me feel nostalgic. I would love to see a Kairi who like, isn't the strongest fighter, but is hella aggressive and fights because you don't mess with her friends. Someone who TRIES against these demigod people and can get some licks in because they don't expect it and she's persistent. I loved how she had ATTITUDE in KH1 and 2, but especially 1. I want to see her TRY, not her go limp when Xemnas grabs her arm. It pisses me off that it took 20 years and DLC to see her DO ANYTHING. It would just say leagues to her character if they just had her find creative solutions to solving problems or defeating enemies. Instead of just tossing her aside as....a sacrifice?

It's honestly incredible how, in a series with Kairi, Namine is the most mistreated character. The girls deserve better.

Ngl, i gotta agree with a lot of these points, kh2 outfits still haven't left my heart since playing the game, especially Riku's sudden reveal from a cool org coadt anf blindfold to jumpscaring me with the year 2006, these are the most memorable outfits for me. Dream Drop was like a middle ground between 2 and 1, the Dream Eater reveal was so funny because i was like, yeah he's got the Spirit logo, then went to "THAT'S THE EMBLEM!" Same with Sora too. The kh2 and 0.2 cutscenes make mf feel like Riku's kh2 trousers were more like sweatpants or something more breathable than jeans but i don't know. I liked the fusion of fashion and armour, like what would the Wayfinder trio look like when wearing modern outfits and armour for the big fight but all of them being in plaid was a disappointing especially when you consider Riku and Yozora in the new Engine, none really splits off into any of the respective characters' usual philosophy (if that's the right word) Sora for me works, probably my 2nd favourite outfit of his, Kairi's is cute but a little lacking in armour. Also I'm surprised how "dainty"? Lighter she feels compared to her usual demeanor in 1 and 2, which maybe is why i feel likd her outfit is cute but needed more personalization. Riku... my poor edgelord... i don't hate the fit but looking at his other outfits, if kh2 is what he has when on the run, 3D is ehat i would see him wearing when he has more options for himself, i could see him with most of his armour and boots but the shirt would be untucked or the something less uniform, it makes sense for his character progression fuy being lart of the light, but feels a little too stock production Riku, like an example of what a "True Keyblade Master" would look and act. Sora's KH4 fits is fine, but i wish he didn't gradually lose all of his yellows blues anc whites for just black and red like kh3, even then his Quadratum look gave some navy blue to his tank top and highlighted the small amlunt of yellow he still had during the fight.

Something that I've never liked, is when people say Kingdom Hearts as ONE WORD. Like "Kingdomhearts" really quickly. Kind of like how you would say "Poptarts". Personally I've always thought the right way to say it, was how you said in the video, emphasizing both words and giving them a little space. "KINGDOM HEARTS."

Darkness is what Dreams are made of. So, too, are Dream Eaters, which Riku is. So, Imagination is also Darkness. Fantasy ... is Darkness. Furthermore, Master Xehanort implies Darkness made the True Kingdom Hearts. The Light in the Darkness. Another Riku Parallel. The Sun standing in the Ocean. (Dark Abyss) Light Actualizes Fantasy. Darkness (Wishes/Dreams) shaped into Actual Reality (Light) Narrative.

Kingdom Hearts is directly parallelled to Riku and his Light. At the end of One, Sora calls to Kingdom Hearts being Light as the Door opens. That Light through the Door is revealed in Fragmentary Passage and the Final Mix to Be Riku's Heart thinking of Sora. So, Sora is Chosen by Riku. Kingdom Hearts is Riku and Sora's Hearts Singing to each other (Dream Drop, Sound Ideas, Dearly Beloved)

i'm stoked to hear that this is a topic of conversation. I've heard a couple people talk about this topic, just not with sora as the focus, so it's interesting to hear it in regards to sora.

Aaaah this was such a pleasant time :) I actually have thought so much about the nature of light and darkness and what that balance means (how light-colored things reflect light, dark-colored things absorb it, truth vs the unknown) so it was really validating to hear y'all agree that it's a shame series hasn't shown darkness very positively yet and it really should (Riku I love you but boy do I wish your arc went a little different) Lots to ponder! But I refuse to unsubscribe, you can't tell me what to do!

Awesome conversation! I think my one qualm with making Sora “God’s Favorite” is I actually quite like that the Keyblade wasn’t meant for him, that by the usual standard he shouldn’t the powerful warrior hero. Him being a “normal guy” who defies the odds thanks to his connections with others and perseverance.

Amazing video, friends! :) Very interesting topics brought up. I think the series will maybe lead into exploring the darkness moving forward, and the reason I think of that is Vanitas. I really think Vanitas is going to come back in the next game because he's the only enemy in KH3 that got like a very unfulfilling death, like there was something missing there. And plus that talk Xehanort and Vanitas had in dark road, where Xehanort hinted he knows what exactly Vanitas is, is very suspicious to me. I don't know what the future has in store, no one does really but I wouldn't be surprised if they bring up some of this stuff in the next installment. Proud of you both and again, thanks for lovely video! :)

My headcanon is that Kingdom Hearts is sort of like the Aetherial Sea from Final Fantasy XIV, or the the collective unconscious that is discussed in Jungian Psychology and also featured in the Persona games. By that logic, Kingdom Hearts itself would not have the ability to think or plan. It would instead have something more like a passive will. So, less of a "everything has already been foretold, by me, the giant heart shaped moon in the sky!" and more of empowering those that align with its will so they can overcome those that oppose its will. As to what that will is, we can only guess. But, my guess is that it wants peace. It wants people to forge connections, friendships, to love one another. It is energy from which all hearts sprang, and hearts are all about gaining strength from connections. To that end, it would be easier for more people to forge more connections if the world was made whole again. Each world being splintered off from one another limits this. So, yes I would say that Kingdom Hearts wants that and likely empowered Xehanort to help him achieve this goal. But, Xehanort decided to go about achieving this goal by wiping the slate clean. By killing everyone. And that fundamentally goes against Kingdom Hearts's will. Hence why it ultimately turned against Xehanort and empowered Sora and allowed him to violate nature so the Guardians of Light could defeat him. This would also explain why when Sora did the same thing to save Kairi, Sora was punished for it. Saving Kairi was not something that needed to happen to stop Xehanort, to make the world whole, or even to forge more connections between people. Death is a natural part of life. There was no greater good behind Sora's wish to save the person he loves most. He simply wanted to do so because he loved her and he valued his connection with her over his connections with anything and everyone else. That... would violate Kingdom Heart's will. And so... that violation of nature was punished.

KH has been explained though? It’s the combined essence of all hearts and connections, in fullmetal alchemist terms Kingdom Hearts is the All and individual hearts are the One, All is One and One is All. Every heart can channel the whole of Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts is every heart as one

this vid was fun, seeing you two chat about kh stuff! on my end, i think i sort of disagree on more than a few ideas of yours, even if i totally get how you reached them, mainly the fact sora is related to kh in any way, which i dont buy since nomura even at the kh4 event said sora is meant to be a normal kid (its riku the one that has the constant god imagery tied to him, in kh3 alone he has like 3 halos and is sacrificed on apollo's sacrificial pyre), and the fact that kh will never end, since nomura said back in com or kh2 he knows it will end and supposedly had in mind the scene that will end the series even then. but i can imagine these can always change, so who knows. what i definitely know its the case is that the voices in the dives of the heart, especially the first one, is not kh. it is categorically and officially meant to be mickey in kh1. the reason you dont feel like it isnt him, and i mean, yeah it doesnt sound like him, its because they fucked up the translation, the first of many times. in japanese its much clearer and obvious in retrospect, he is the voice talking to sora through the first game (he does the same thing to riku, and no one puts that in discussion!). in english they stripped all the cute mickey-ism and just turned it into a mysterious voice. it does work, but it ruins that bit of the story. and almost every time we go in a dive, there is always a mysterious voice, but the person always changes. in kh1 its mickey, in bbs its newborn sora, and in kh3 its still a mystery, just like a lot of kh3 and especially kh3's dive still is, what with the voice knowing that the guaridans will die, that sora needs to save 7, and then sora says he saved 6 in remind forgetting he had to save riku since he forgot his sacrifice too. if i had to guess, the voice is maybe sora's subconscious reminding sora of what he has to do after he dies at the graveyard before he goes in the final world another different way to see the events, which yes would make the kh3 dive happen not at the start of the game or be much more than it appears to be at least. it is entirely contextless in game so far after all, which is a first for the series. also i dont really see how riku's journey is stamp out darkness? he uses both light and dark together, he uses darkness for good! its like the moral of the story and he is the example to follow basically

The discussion of personified Kingdom Hearts/the KH deity and their relationship to Sora makes me imagine something like Papa Titan in The Owl House. They didn't choose Sora to be their champion/fight for their agenda; they just watched Sora and thought, "I like him. I'll give him a hand when he needs it."

ive been replaying the series and eating up kh retrospectives from every channel i can find and this one is immediately my favourite, holy shit. i got to the end and hit replay to watch it again, it's SO GOOD. ive been crawling through the desert looking for a channel talking about the kh girls with any kind of depth/thoughtfulness and im SO excited to dig into the rest of your work, like literally what a bounty. thank you so much!! ive done the exact same mulling over kh3 Good/kh3 Bad for years and it's SO satisfying seeing it laid out like this why kairi's death scene is such a low for the entire series. it's a failure of the writing and a failure for the series' thesis statement and it's a travesty!!!!! god this is so cathartic lol the editing and jokes in this are so fucking good. nicki shuffling away in sora's stupid shoes is gonna stay with me forever if you ever get the chance/interest in the future, i would LOVE to see your retrospectives on the other eras of this series. but i know this video was such an undertaking and i hope you get to bask in the achievement forever, like it's SO fucking good thank you so much for working on this, im gonna be coming back to this video for years <3 especially when it turns out kh4 IS just a bait and switch for a full kairi game YAYYYYYY 🎉🎉🎉🎉
