Thank you for posting this. It was the first F1 race I watched on TV all the way through, and of course it made me a Gilles fan. Mixed emotions seeing it again.

I truly miss the less than produced introduction with Murray & James carrying the load, and a good amount of ambience that gives you a modicum of being “there.” Yup, sharing my thoughts before the race begins… Thanks for posting.

Just like in Brazil, where Carlos Reutemann showed who was number one... here he also showed that he was above Jones, the 1980 desk champion. PS: Williams never informed Reutemann in Brazil about the difference between Jones and Carlos so that he could increase his speed. They let him run blindly and then showed him the sign so he could pass. They played dirty and then blamed Carlos for playing dirty. What a joke. PS2: I hope the owner of the channel doesn't delete my comment. And that many people read it and open their eyes because I'm already tired of reading that Lole is to blame for this and that. PS3: Lole, the true champion of 1981. May you rest in peace.

Hockenheim was very characteristic and individualistic layout before shortened 21st century.

What a fabulous race! Stunning circuit. Great racing. I was a huge fan of Alan Jones and what a wonderful passing manoeuvre he did on Prost. He did a similar pass on Jabouille in 1979. He must have loved this circuit.

Merci beaucoup. J'ai beaucoup apprécié voir Prost dans la Renault 20B, son talent était déjà évident. Malheureusement, la Renault a eu des difficultés (injection) toute la saison, qui l'a beaucoup pénalisée. Aussi, on notera que Arnoux n'a pas joué la jeu et n'a pas aidé son coéquipier, alors que ce dernier était aux prises avec Jones juste derrière lui. Arnoux, déjà mauvais joueur !

My god, the mistakes Murray makes...'Through the chicane, third gear, at a 125 miles per hour...' No, Murray. If people can drive through a chicane with 200 km/per hour, a chicane would be useless....He also does not see overtakes, names the wrong drivers, names the wrong winners of past GP's...He notices the rough engine-note of Jones's car but does not he see his obvious waving to the pits...Calls Alistair Caldwell an Englishman, who is from New-Zealand... I wonder how I could stand his commentary forty years ago. He's adorable but without the corrections of James Hunt quite unbearable.

Without this lack of concentration here and the mistake at Monza Senna would have won 10 Grands Prix out of 16, too dominant even for "The professor". Only Jim Clark could dominate races to such an extent before him

I saw this race on TV when I was 12 years old! Nelson Piquet was fantastic in this race, saving equipment and waiting for the right moment to attack!!!

Glad I downloaded yesterday's just on time, lol. This is amazing too. I have the live version with Barry Gil and James Hunt doing the commentary for BBC. I'm surprised they rerecorded this later with Murray.

Nelson could win 6 or 7 GPs that year. He made so many mistakes and yet he clinched the Titel 👍🏻

Why the picture from 1981 better then from 1991-92-93?????

Senna's record at Monaco was 2-3-1-1-1-1-1-1, plus one DNQ and 2 DNF. The King of Monaco.

Williams had such advantage in the early part of this season but Nelson Piquet done a huge turnaround in the championship and won drivers title by just 1 point. Even if Alan won this race, he would be still lost the championship to Piquet by 1 point.

i was at this race and goodness me it was boring as hell until the moment you realised watson might win. safety standards have come a long way in 44 years. that ambulance going across the track nearly froze my blood. this race would have been red flagged at least twice these days. Murray Walker clearly didn't have a clue how the McLaren was made.

Piercarlo Ghinzani was a very popular but unlucky driver in Formula One, mind you he was very fortunate to have scored his only 2 points in Formula One in 1984 when he finished fifth.

I would give Piquet benefit of a doubt here. In 1980 , after Piquet put pressure on Jones for the WC , Jones had him in the wall in Canada . Here again I suspect , Jones was playing a bully , and Nelson was not having none of it . Nelson had a reputation for fair racing throughout his career .
