I never managed to get into his songs and I think you hit the bullseye here: it's the overdramatic presentation that makes the experience quite uncomfortable. Of course, other than for the fact that his songs don't fit my taste at all. But that's his style and his way of performing and he shouldn't hide or change his true self.

This should be more than Top 5, it should be a contender for the MESC trophy. It's a delicious decadent slice of baroque pop, and there's much potential for theatre as well as vocals. I know you're on Team Kantera because of your yearning for local flavour, and this has none of that. But Lalaratataetc... , while being very catchy and having the potential to attract the Trenitul/Jako demographic can still be easily seen as a copy of these two, and it would be slaughtered by the juries in the final, while this song can stand alone without any comparisons, and can be both televote and jury bait.

I love how you included the worst song in Eurovision history, O Julissi, as an example of an embarrassing entry from a Western European country 😂 I really don't understand why Eurovision fans are so defensive with juries. They act like the public only votes for garbage, but the public's winners are far more diverse than the jury's (between 2014 and 2023, all jury winners that weren't from Sweden were ballads). I think only the public should get to decide the winner. Anyone with self-respect would gladly exclude a group of 200 people deciding half of the result based on what is essentially personal taste and bias rather than professional insight. We actually risked having the contest turn into a radio songs competition after Sweden's non-organic victory in 2015 btw, since the following year's lineup was almost entirely made up of pop songs produced by Swedes. Thankfully, Salvador Sobral changed the trend after 2017. An argument I really don't understand is that by removing jurors from the semi-finals had the consequence of concentrating all the jury votes on one song in the final. It makes no sense. People really think that had Australia gone through in 2024, Switzerland would've gotten less sets of 12 points? Let's not be silly here. I should also add that juries perpetrate bloc voting much more than the televote nowadays.

I would have ignored this if it wasn't for you. Kantera is the Eurovision-packaged Maltese slice of qaghaq tal-ghasel, but this feels like one of those farmer-produced sundried tomatoes or gbejniet ... an acquired taste but raw and pure. Would be nice to see more of these modern/ethnic fusions in the future that don't need to pander to anyone.

This is some colossal bullshit. Juries save Eurovision from becoming a trashfest where every coubtry votes for friends. The late 90s and early 00s were mostly televote only and it was an absolute disaster and almost ended Eurovision.

I agree with you that this isn't the right song for Malta to send to Eurovision. And I completely agree with you on why - no one is talking about if the song is any good, it's just about "serving kant." What is the general reaction from Maltese people about this song, btw? Do they agree with you or do you think it has a shot at winning the televote?

Me when I lie. Just go watch Eurovision pre 2009 voting sequences and you'll understand in minutes how juries are saving it.

The juries are not ruining Eurovision. Since there is no jury in the semi-finals, the songs that are judged are eliminated. In the finals, the juries vote for certain songs. That's the point. If the jury returned to the semi-finals, this wouldn't be a problem. The public vote is what is ruining Eurovision. A lot of troll songs are making it to the finals.

I have so many concerns about juries. They prefer english songs over other languages and pop songs over out the box songs. I had to remember that In the past I hated the dispora voting in the televote. No way german public could vote always in Turkiye. But now I agree more with the televote than to the juries.

You forgot to mention there were jury wildcards in 2008 & 2009. Tamara was NOT 8th in the televote. She was 12th. Juries have a bias against Slavic languages (except Ukrainian) That's why Serbia or Slovenia aren't doing well with them. Had Proud been in Macedonian, it probably wouldn't have won the jury vote. Juries prefer Romance languages, which is why France did so well in 2021 & last year. Trenulețul was actually in Romanian. There's no Moldovan language. Tbh, the radio-friendly criteria has always been stupid. Why should it matter if a song is radio-friendly? I've heard all but one ESC winner since 2019 on the radio or elsewhere anyway. And from my country, Rockstars and Always on the run (one finished last, one 12th) They seem to have removed this criteria in 2023, apparently.

A few points: 1) juries are looking other things as well, not just a song (such as performance). Therefore for example choreographers or creative directors can be important add to jury. Also we can’t forget that Eurovision is a TV show. Therefore we need TV people in the jury. 2) If jury would be bigger than 5 people, basic pop would do even better than before. Instead the jury needs to be more diverse. 3) I didn’t really get the point about objectivity? If all the balkan countries would have given 12 to Croatia because Rim Tim Tagi Dim did well in Balkan area before the contest, wouldn’t it have shown bias instead of objectivity and it would have been a new reason to question jury’s objectivity. 4) Well, i prefer international jury in national finals over national juries because national juries can show bias towards certain artists because they have personal ties to them (this was seen for example in UMK 2016 and Poland’s NF in 2023) This rarely happens with international juries.

Not only does Google translate exist, but ESC does provide (official) English translations of the lyrics of non-English language songs (and iirc there used to be more translations way back), so the jury members not voting songs sung in languages they don't understand is even less valid.
