Wafting around at Bedford Autodrome in a Tesla Model 3

This is a hotlap of Bedford GT in a stock Tesla Model 3 Performance. With some sticky rubber, suspension, and brakes, I reckon this car would get down into the low-mid 2:4x. You don't get many laps at full power though so it's not a great track car. It'd make for a great sprint event car though! Telemetry from Tesla's onboard track mode recording. This is a hotlap of Bedford GT in a Tesla Model 3 Performance. The car is bone stock and had around 50% battery so a high 2 minute 40 would easily be on the cards if it had 80% battery. A very capable car but let down by the terrible brakes, and a lack of fast charging infrastructure at race tracks.

Fantastic two days away with some of the Ariel Club at Anglesey. Car performed flawlessly and really suited the circuit. More bravery is required through the fast right hander and the Atom should be able to go sub 1:34 quite comfortably. What a machine!

      @@rudyyyxu Just looked at one of my laps and I went from 78% to 65% over the course of a 3.8 mile track so by my calculations that's around 2.5 kWh per mile or 0.4 miles per kWh. Bedford GT has quite a few fast straights though which makes things worse.

  • @TeslaGurus
    @TeslaGurus 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yes agreed that a circuit like Bedford GT really doesn't suit it. A few of us compete in hill climbs and sprints and this is where it does well. Also on a track like Brands Indy or Thruxton. Which pads are you using?

    • @thedarkkarters
      @thedarkkarters 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I swapped to Carbotech pads and uprated fluid around 4 years ago. I've done three track days and they still have a lot of life left on them 👍 I saw peak deceleration of 1.2G so the stopping power is good but the brakes overheat big time

      @@thedarkkarters Good choice, that's what we recommend for owners who don't want to spend the money on a BBK. The rotors are the weak point, just not good at shedding the heat!

  • @TeslaGurus
    @TeslaGurus 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The brake trace is purely hydraulic brake pressure. If you have regen on 100% you won't need as much pressure to decelerate at the same rate as 0% but that's really the only difference. Without upgraded brakes of some sort you'll really have to stick with 100% regen though as they usually overheat on most circuits otherwise. But, yes yours will be Intel Atom GPU.

    • @thedarkkarters
      @thedarkkarters 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That makes sense. I had regen on 70% but that was probably still too high. I have different pads and fluid but only get a couple of laps before the brakes overheat. The car would be great for sprints but it's frustrating on long tracks like Bedford. It's annoying the drop off in performance as the battery gets under 50% too.

  • @TeslaGurus
    @TeslaGurus 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm guessing your car has got the Atom GPU as I can see some stuttering in the data, which is caused by a bug which repeats and sometimes corrupts the data. It can even cause the car to disengage from Track Mode while you're driving, which is annoying to say the least! If that happens, please report the bug via the app with a timestamp so Tesla gets another report from a different owner. We need more reports like this to have a hope of getting the issue fixed, because as time goes in it will only get worse. Thanks!

    • @thedarkkarters
      @thedarkkarters 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it's a 2020 car so I'm assuming that's the Atom GPU? Interesting. This is the first time I've actually used the track mode data, I didn't realise the stuttering was a bug. I'm assuming the brake trace doesn't factor in the regen braking either?

      Sorry anx10us, only just saw your comment. Pretty sure the back stepped out because I had a little bit too much trail brake going into the corner. In hindsight I should have braked harder, off earlier, and on the power earlier. For GoPro setup I've got a suction mount stuck on the flat section between the seats. I've also got a little cheap windsock from Amazon to cover the GoPro and that makes quite a big difference on wind noise.

      I didn't do a stint without track mode enabled but you're right - it enables more cooling and you can definitely hear it working harder. I upgraded the pads and fluid because I'd heard the stock brakes were terrible for track work so I definitely could have turned down regen.

    Thanks for that video. This the first I've heard of the battery thermal indicator, and the derating of the power so quickly. If there is way to turn off the actual regen, you might try that since it moves the braking heat into the battery, inverter, and motors. (Some EVs just move the regen to the brake pedal when you turn it down or off so it does nothing). But I don't think it will help as much in the Model 3P as some EVs. The Model 3 Performance doesn't have the massive regen we see in the I-Pace. At 120 mph, it's like dropping a chute when you lift (200 kW?)
