Would this cute bag hold a 8" diameter round sourdough loaf? Thanks!
Yes. It definitely will.
I helped make these at a restaurant in Milwaukee in the 80s. Lots of Germans there. I never tried them, now I wish I had. We used to mix them in a 5 gallon tub then the head cook would ladle them onto the griddle. Usually done in conjunction with Friday Fish Fry.
@@AB-ix5yg They're a very popular side dish for fish frys. And with good reason. They go well together!
Lovely, such clear instructions , thank you.
You are so very welcome!
Essential oils work well if you add enough and add a little vegetable glycerin. Without glycerin works also, but it helps to keep oils from separating from solution.
You didn’t show us in your video 🤔
As it says at the end of the video, there's a link to the full length version in the description.
This seemed not quite right. Thick tasting. I remember the liquid being lighter so that you could really taste the ice cream, and in fact most other recipes call for a bit of milk rather than heavy cream and just tablespoons, not ounces (there are two tablespoons in an ounce, which would mean half as much). Also, I'm sure real Hershey's syrup would have been better, but that thickness is what was really off-putting. Heavy cream (which costs a fortune!) was to me just wrong. In fact, from watching it made at the soda fountain, I don't remember milk or cream being added at all. Just chocolate syrup and club soda and ice cream. Clearly the experimenting is not over yet.
Sounds like you're disappointed in the recipe. You will have to do some experimenting yourself. I'm thrilled with it. Hope you find something that pleases you.
I went to boarding school many years ago and the nuns had a bowl with a spatula at the end of the dinner table. We all scraped our plates clean before washing them. It eliminated the need for prewash. It worked really well. By the way, we used brown soap flakes which I think had lye in them!
@@gerrywalsh6723 Interesting. I'll bet that did work well. Soap is made with lye. There is no other way to make it. But the lye is no longer in the final product. It would burn the skin when used.
Do they need to stay in the refrigerator for a certain period of time before they're ready to eat?
@@123Cookies-v7m They can be eaten right away. However, they will not be as tasty until after they have sat in the brine for at least 4 weeks.
I made this dish soap and followed everything exactly, but it’s still very liquidy. It didn’t thicken up with the salt. Did I do something wrong?
It's hard for me to say without seeing what you made. But it is much looser than commercial dish soap. It isn't likely that you did something wrong. It is more likely that it isn't much like what you're used to.
It was very easy to make, but a few hours later, the soap and the water separated. Shaking it doesn't help to combine again. Did I miss something? Isn't it supposed to remain liquid?
No it doesn't stay completely liquified. You would have to make a true liquid soap for that. Doing that is an easy process. But it involves a very caustic chemical (and cannot be done without it). This recipe is for those who don't want to work with that. Shaking it always reblends it for me. You have to use natural soap and it has to be fully melted for shaking it to work.
How many hours to ferment
@@Delusionslayer Best flavor after 4 to 6 weeks.
@@sustainableslowliving I fermented it now, like to know if the nutrition value is still preserved after this process
@@Delusionslayer The fermentation process can minimally decrease the nutrients in foods. However, it improves the accessibility of the nutrients in the food as well. Which in the end can mean increased nutrient levels.

Coconut oil creates a nice lather in homemade soaps. Lather grabs and removes dirt and germs.
I have a HE machine. How much should I use in it?
Quite honestly, I'm unfamiliar with the HE washer and I have no idea how much you should use in it. I do hope someone with more experience than myself offers some advice for you.
do you think i can add some fish oil without the treats being a weird clumpy mess?
I would think that would be fine. You could also try making them with tuna instead of adding fish oil. I believe that would work for sure.
Excellent video excellent insight thank you so much
You are so very welcome!
Ivory soap 99.4% pure what?
As with all products the ingredients are listed on the product itself. They can also be found online.
salt question. does anuone know about rock salt version epson salt or even we have salts we bought for a water softener we could not use , can we use that salt, too ????
I am uncertain about either of those choices. I hope someone else can answer your question for you.
I guess it's "brave" that this is the first time you ever made them. But why? Sorry, thumbs down for no experience whatsoever.
Sorry you feel that way. I made them at the request of a friend. They are well researched. I've been a long time study of nutrition for people, plants, and animals. And I've been making my way around a kitchen since I was 7. I will soon be 60. I'm okay with the recipe. It is 100% your choice whether or not you make it for your feline.
Can this be used for hand soap...my grandson washes his alot...
It could. But I wouldn't go to the trouble of making it for a hand soap. I would just let him use the bar of ivory. The other ingredients won't really do anything for his hands. The salt may even cause them to dry out.
Ivory was horrible on our youngest baby. My dermatologist hated Ivory - 99% pure wasn’t quite what he felt was truth. We switched to Dove for her and it made all the difference. Any other suggestions for someone like me? I’m so sick of being scammed by the food and beauty industry. I used to love Dawn but it doesn’t do a good job anymore Fels Naptha however is excellent at killing poison ivy oil if you’ve come in contact with it. My husband and kids are severely allergic to it. If they do get a rash Zanfel Cream (which is expensive but well worth it) keeps them out of the ER. ❤
I would try to find a soap maker who will make you a pure bar. As for the poison ivy ... learn to identify (if you don't already know) jewel weed. It very often grows next to poison ivy, as antidotes do in nature. If you family is aware that they've come in contact with poison ivy at the time of contact and there is jewel weed there, they can rub the juice from the inside of the stems on the point of contact and they won't get the rash at all. Don't be fooled by jewelweed lotions and soaps. They help but they are not damage control not prevention. And in the type of case you're family has they won't do a thing.
All those flour will cause constipation. Not healthy at all!
Given as a treat this will not cause constipation in cats. It is not meant to be used to make up a regular diet. Additionally, the cornmeal in the recipe is actually full of dietary fiber which is very important for cats as it regulates their bowel movements.
@@sustainableslowliving It is a well known fact! Cats r not made to eat that food in nature. No wonder so many animals r sick these days. And tuna is so toxic for animals and humans. Flour can be used as glue. When I was a kid we used to make flour paste to stick our kites. It acts as a glue.
can I use it to shave my face??? Thank you
Absolutely!
@@sustainableslowliving Thank you for your reply🙂
Ice cream soda looks delicious! What kind of chocolate syrup do you use? It looked thin. Thank you!
I couldn't give you a brand name. It was a syrup I purchased for my food truck through a restaurant supply company. It was some time ago now.
Thanks will make this. I like the idea of salt. It can kill some germs too.
Cook in croc pot
I'll bet that works well. I don't have a crock pot at the moment. I am currently living tiny. I keep as little kitchen equipment around as possible.
Thank you! I will make some. I'm really into more natural solutions so I'm sure this will work for me.
You are very welcome!
I will definitely be making that Philadelphia Egg Creme
@@bellywitchproductions2183 I hope you enjoy it!
Depends on how much she live in her house
Is soap in the end solid, or liquid or soft?
The soap is liquid. But resolidifies over time. It can be shaken vigorously before each use to make it easy to use. To make an actual liquid soap like you buy in the store you follow a different process using the chemical lye. It is a process many don't want to get involved in. This soap is an alternative.
I agree with you about SalSuds. Happy I found you today.
I'm happy you've found me too! Thanks for reaching out ;)
Salt and baking soda make a hard gel. I found drop salt to a peck is better! The more you put in the harder it gets!
The recipe is great though!
Thank you!
Hi Diane. I started making dish soap using your recipe. I switched to ivory because you pointed out it was 98% pure. Well wanted to let you know Ivory has a form of Methylisothiazolinone in it. I broke out. It is byproducts of toxic waste bonded. I am deathly allergic to it. I am now filling a report with company, they say it’s not, but my skin says it is!
I'm so sorry to hear that! It's rough when there's an allergic reaction :( Thank you for the information.
I am so glad to posted this because I said on another comment our dermatologist told us it was the worst in spite of their advertising. The horrible rash it gave our baby was awful. He had us switch to Dove.
Maybe it will perfect with pure or diy coconut soap instead of Ivory soap? 😊
i like using ditilled water. i think it helps.
@@cinmac3 Distilled water is likely a great option for many people. I have always lived where there is great well water. So, I feel like I'm good to go taking it right from the tap.
This recipe is similar to the one I use. But I don’t use table salt instead I use epsom salts and I get this last one already scented to replace the essential oils which I agree with you doesn’t add enough to transfer to the clothes besides that depending on their quality essential oils could stain fabric. The other reason I don’t used salt is because salt can fade some type of fabrics and colors.
Scented epsom salts sounds like a good way to go ;)
I agree with the no soap bars, like you said they only cause build up on your clothes and soap bars/flakes/shaven’s should never put in any washing machine as they clog and cause soap scum eventually. However you don’t need two use two water softeners, skip the baking soda, it’s a filler, and arm and hammer WASHING SODA is a a DETERGENT BOOSTER, you have no detergent in there to boost, I’d suggest adding some Ariel or other less chemical powdered detergent. Salt makes water HARD, especially table salt, and it will eventually rust your machine from the inside as salt rust’s metal objects, if you must use salt, you need to use bigger pieces like kosher salt to rub up against surfaces.
Thanks for the input. I looked at Ariel. From what I'm seeing it has just an average rating as an eco-friendly detergent.
@@sustainableslowliving If you can find anything else powdered detergent wise just add like 1/3 to 1/2 if that to your recipe for true detergent, since you have 2 water softeners and no surfactant it’s not detergent or soap. I took a class on this and making lye soap that had a surfactant quality but the secret is for true homemade soap/detergent you have to add a true detergent, they have true lye ones on amazon, after taking that class woooo that is too scary and dangerous for me messing with lye, but that’d be a truer detergent but kinda with most soap bars you’d have to be like our great grandmother’s and beat your clothes on a rock to get them clean and the soap out, so you definitely need some serious agitation, one of machine’s is a speed queen with an agitator but even I wouldn’t put soap bars in there. Just tweak your recipe, take out the baking soda and salt. If you can find a powdered detergent that is eco friendly that you feel comfortable with, adding the washing soda detergent booster with real detergent is a great idea! I hope I didn’t sound rude! I was just alarmed you had all fillers and used salt, with no detergent. The crap people use for DIY is so ridiculous when zote and fels both clearly say “laundry stain remover bar.” Yes they work great if you wet them, rub it on and pretreat stains, not “shred me up and I’m automatically soap/detergent!” I’m also very uncomfortable with fels as one of its last ingredients is a known carcinogen. Zote I’m iffy about because of the optical brighteners! But it is made with beef tallow, still wouldn’t shred it up for “soap” because they are both stain bars. I had to switch to Ariel with booster for something’s like stinky workout clothes, but otherwise my brother who sells washing machines at Lowes is always telling us how many machines get their warranties invalidated because of DIY damage. He says modern machines are meant to have liquid detergent, just to the first line because people use ENTIRELY too much and fill the scoop, which is also bad for your washer and clothes! If you can find a powdered detergent or liquid that you are comfortable with using I’d do that, I know it’s fun making your own stuff, believe me I have DIY’s with my kids slime, playdoh everything you can think of, and it’s so satisfying seeing them light up that we made our own and they feel proud! Again, sorry if I sounded grumpy, good luck to you and let us know if you change/modify anything! 💙
@@laffytaffy2916 You didn't sound a bit grumpy. I appreciate you sharing what you've learned. Thank you.
I’m thinking if one needed louis dressing and was in a pinch they could add chili sauce &/or tabasco to this
@@hb7282 Perhaps. I'm not familiar with that dressing.
Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial. Have no experience with sewing and after my second attempt I was able to make neat stitches. For beginner, back stitches are easy but I found it was a little more difficult to undo and redo for practicing vs undoing blanket stitches 🪡

what a great tutorial..Thank you..
Thank you so much. I had fun making these!
Hi, it only shows you pouring the oil into the bowl, so i wonder what are the other ingredients you use, & approx measurements? Thank you in advance! :-)
There is a link for a full video in the description. You can see the full recipe there.
OH MY GOODNESS! What a mess this made. I'm not blaming the creator of this mixture. Many of the homemade recipes I get on line fail to turn out well. Please tell me what I did wrong. I followed the exact recipe given and put the mixture in a canning jar. The next morning the soap had settled into a half solid, half liquid combination. I shook it and then used it, but the Ivory flakes would not dissolve. (They had done so when I first made the mixture the night before. ) I tried microwaving it, and the Ivory STILL did not dissolve. The portion that I used to wash dishes actually left globs of Ivory in the drain that remained until the next day when I scooped them out. (If you've ever dropped a sliver of soap in the shower or tub, you know what I'm talking about. It STAYS!) Today I shook and then microwaved the mixture and used it again. What remained in the jar turned solid again within minutes. At the rate I'm going, the jar will be empty within a few more days!
I'm not sure what could have gone wrong. The mixture does start to resolidify. But I've always been able to simply shake it to remix it.
If anyone uses essential oil make sure your jar is amber or dark because essential oil is sensitive to light and its effectiveness diminishes with light.
What did I do wrong?? My soap ended up collecting back up together at the top of the container 😩 it was melted and mixed with the liquid!
It will need to be shaken very well before using each time. That's why I keep mine in a mason jar with a plastic lid.
Why talking to lowest 😂
The message is for whoever needs to hear it. The uninformed are not 'low'. They are simply uninformed.
How long are they good for
They will last a week or so in the fridge. And about 3 months in the freezer.
Hi, thank you for your recipe. Can this powder be poured into the same tray as the liquid deter or do you need to put it in the washer first? Thank you
I never put powder into the liquid detergent tray. I don't know if it can be done or not. I have always just placed it directly in the wash water.
@@sustainableslowliving thank you 😊
Does the vinegar need to be boiled before?
No. It doesn't.
Ivory soap has chemicals in it...am I missing something here?
@@christinekominek263 Ivory is 99% pure. If you want to go 100% you can pick up a different bar. I'm sure that was in the video.
