This is so helpful! Thanks a lot❤
very technical. more skill is much needed for me.
This measure is one of the most difficult in all Chopin so I understand! It took quite a bit of practice for me to get it ready for the video lesson! Thank you for watching
@@OlympiaPiano I went through all of the videos. They are so comprehensive. Your instruction include theory. I really do appreciate your instructions. I intend to send you a donation as well.
@@OlympiaPiano I apologize I am from Richmond Tx.
@@f9883h Thank you! Yes I include the theory because I have such a wide variety of viewers--some are learning the piece the first time, and others are revisiting it, I find that it is helpful to include the theory once a person is ready for it!
@@f9883h wonderful! I lived in Houston for a year when I was playing piano for Houston Grand Opera--beautiful country!
I watched all the videos and yours is the best tutorial. 👏👏👏
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope it helps you on this gorgeous piece!
Great warm-up! Thank you! ❤
Thank you for taking the time out to let me know!
Do you have midis of this piece?
No, sorry just the video. Thank you for watching!
As a very late beginner to the piano I found that set of exercises very helpful in getting familiar with the scale, chords, fingerings and inversions in a very musical way. Many thanks for that. I shall use that a drill to warm up as well. It's given me a desire to try other chord progressions so I'll check out some more of your videos. Many thanks and much appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope this helps you out. I do have several videos on chords and chord progressions so hopefully they can help you!
Very nice. I'm exhausted just watching.
Thanks for the comment--I was exhausted putting this one together--hard key!!!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Is there a fun way to learn harmony?
I am not sure where you live but you might consider taking basic music theory at a local community college or community center. In my community (roughly 100,000 people) we have both options and people seem to like it. Also, Berklee online has all sorts of classes that my friends and colleagues seem to like. It is the kind of thing that you can start with the basics and then dig in deeper as you go. I include it in these videos because lots of times people are re-visiting the piece and I find that understanding the harmony helps make choices about pacing, dynamics etc. Hope this helps and I hope you are taking your time on the videos--best wishes
Which one is the grace note? 😊 by the way you explain very well.
Yes- great question. The grace notes are the tiny little notes that are about 1/4 the size of the regular notes. I am not sure how your score is numbered but in measure 2 or 3 there are two grace notes after the F# trill at the beginning of the piece that are at the very end of the measure. They are not part of the "regular" rhythm and you have to take a bit of time to figure out how they fit in.
Hi Jennifer! You play the 16th notes with 2-1-2-3. Wondering why not 2-1-3-4? The hand is already in position for this fingering, no passing over the thumb and 5 on the E after that will be much easier.
Yes good observation--In my hand (and for many people), the finger 4 is extremely weak, so I am not able to get the power on finger 4 for that moment. I prefer to use finger 3 for the D# because that helps me get the "con forza" feel. Like I always say, however, please do the fingering that works for your hand and if 2-1-3-4 works well for you, play it that way.
Thank you, Jennifer! Watched all videos in the series and learned a lot, even commented on some of them. The only thing that makes me sad is that although I know some chords and am eager to learn more music theory, I could not keep up with your harmonic analysis but I'll go back to it over time. Love your attention to the detail! Great style of teaching! Looking forward to your future videos.
Thank you for taking part in the series. Your comments were great. I put the harmonic analysis in there because the videos will be there like you said over time, sometimes they also help people who already know the piece and are revisiting it. Plus music theory is fun!
Благодарим ви!
Thank you very much! I love all your thoughtful questions
Thank you, Jennifer. May I share a couple of personal thoughts on these two measures. Speaking of variations (in this case E# vs. E): in one of my practice sessions I accidently hit G# instead of F# in the second halves of these measures and I must say I kind of liked it. What do you think of this? Does it sound wrong to you? Does it sound wrong from a harmonic perspective? The other question has to do with the two tied G#-s in the RH: I personally find them to be too much. What I mean by that is if you play them on another instrument, e.g. some string instrument whose sound does not fade away at all or fades away slowly, you will see that a long two-bar G# over the LH is not very pleasant (at least to me). On a piano where the sound decays quickly this might not be a problem but often times I change the instrument on my digital piano to not get bored and cannot help but feel it. I'd rather not play the second G# and let the beauty of the LH shine there. What do you think of that?
Great thoughts. I love the fact that you are reacting to the music and questioning the possibilities. With regards to the G# on the second half of the beat--yes it sounds wrong to me because I have played this piece for over 30 years, but it doesn't sound "bad" it simply creates a different chord harmony that is a little less dark than the D# diminished with the F#. With regards to the G# tie in the RH, the G# is the 5th note of the scale which has a really important function in that it resolves to the main note of the scale - in this case C#, so in my opinion Chopin is holding this G# with the tension underneath (and clashing with the second half of m. 59 and 60) as he allows the music to fade away and resolve. When I play this piece I do choose to play the E in measures 59-60 so the E# is a relief and release in m 61. Hope this helps.
Thank you.
Thank you for all of these videos and all the useful tips, Jennifer! I am learning this piece currently and am learning a lot. I have a question regarding this video: although you do not mention it, it can be easily observed: when the RH is playing this long scale at tempo, the RH is slower than its normal tempo. I've thought about this even before watching this video and now it looks like I have a proof. :) It appears that if the LH were to keep its tempo, the RH scale would be super super fast even for advanced pianists. What are your thoughts on this?
Yes, the "big scale" is generally played slower--I am sure there are pianists that can do it at tempo so to speak but in my opinion it is nice to slow down here and allow this big scale to be a final, beautiful flourish. Some of the most famous concert pianists take it quite slowly. It is best if the piece has a lot of give and take throughout so it feels more poetic.
Thank you. I had made a mistake in my comment: I was actually talking about the LH (not RH) becoming slower than its normal tempo during the big scale.
They both get slower! So no problem.
Grazie Olympia!
hope it goes well for you--I think B minor is very difficult!
Hello! My name is Gabriel, and I’m a Romanian who has been living in Belgium for a long time. I studied guitar for many years, but one day I felt it was the right time to dedicate myself to the piano. I found this channel by chance and I am extremely happy with my luck. I don’t have enough words to thank you for what you do here for people like me, who don’t have the means to pay for a piano teacher. The work you do is impressive, congratulations and respect! I would like to suggest something, if I may. I know that one of the biggest mistakes adults make when learning to play the piano is choosing an inappropriate repertoire. The impulse to try and learn to play pieces that are far beyond their skill level is very common. I would love it if you could create a video in which you recommend and explain how important it is to choose a repertoire that matches our abilities. Thank you!
Hi Gabriel--thank you for your comment and thank you for watching! I think you have a very good point and I will try to see what I can come up with in terms of videos on that topic. Best wishes!
Thanks
Thank you for watching!

Hello Jennifer, thank you so much for this really helpful tutorial. I think your tutorials are just great and I'm a big fan of them. As a German native speaker, I would like to make a few additional comments about the word "Träumerei", I hope that is ok for you and for the viewers with added value. Literally translated, the word “träumen” (verb) means “to dream”. In this particular case, it is almost certainly not a nighttime dream that is meant, but a daydream, a dreamy child who is completely lost in his thoughts. When one speaks of a "verträumtes" child in German, then e.g. a child who sits in the classroom and instead of listening to the teacher absentmindedly looks out the window, watches the birds or the clouds, for example. When we talk about a "verträumtes" child, we mean children who are inattentive, but at the same time sensitive and calm, which is why these children are usually treated with care and love although they are not listening. They are in "their own world" for a while. I think this is represented very well in this composition by Schumann.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this more fully to my viewers and I!!!! As I haven't recorded the final video yet, I am going to share this in the final wrap up as I think it is a perfect way to end the series. Many thanks for viewing!
Thanks!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
Thanks!
Thank you! I hope you will let me know how things go for you!
Helpful indeed! Thank you!
Very happy to hear! Best wishes
I only started piano at 65 yoa, just like my Mom. She played for over 20 years, so I have a future ahead of me. This is slightly out of my pay grade, but not for long. I take two lessons a week in Western Switzerland, with two different teachers. I only recently started singing, since I have been very shy about my voice. But it's getting better, and it has helped my musicality. One teacher said he was impressed with my technical skills, since I've been striving to incoorporate exercises like this in my practice. But this was so instructive. Merci beaucoup.
Thank you for your wonderful comment. How exciting for you! I have known many adults who started piano around 60 years of age and played for 20-25 years, getting quite accomplished. Please keep me posted on your journey! Best wishes!
Thank you!❤
You are most welcome!
Thank you!! Helped me a lot!

You are very welcome, thank you for watching. Let me know how it goes for you!
Thank you very much, I am practicing Chopin c#minor now. I,m going to try this soon from south korea❤
I am so happy to hear you are working on Chopin. It is my dream to come to South Korea!!!!!!! I have so many Korean friends both those who play piano and don't Best wishes and let me know how it goes
Many thanks! You’re an excellent teacher! 🎹
Thank you for your kind comment and thank you for subscribing! I hope this piece goes well for you.
Thanks!🎉
You are most welcome--once you get the hang of this, it is a game changer!
Thank you!🎉
I hope this works for you
Thank you! Can't wait to try it!❤🎉
I absolutely adore formula pattern scales because they force our brain to create new pathways and really lock in the fingering
Thanks again for such a wonderful overview of this beautiful piece. Hoping you are feeling better :) I am loving every measure of it! Great advice as how to approach this overview, in a way this is what I am doing: notes, fingering (which in some cases is different to fit my hands and where I am going next) and rhythm. I prefer to memorize, specially a piece like this one which is not to long, this way I feel more confident for interpretation :) At first I don’t use pedal at all so I can hear what I play. I feel dynamics and pedal can come a bit later. Best!
You are welcome. I think how you described your learning process is great!
Thanks
Thank you very much!
Thanks so much for these lessons, bar per bar. I just found your channel a couple of days ago and I'm eager to get into this lovely piano piece , even though I've got a bit of catching up to do 😁. Hopefully on the next one I can join with you from the beginning. Thanks again 😊
Thank you so much! The videos will be here so just go at your own pace. Please let me know your progress and if you have any questions. Best wishes!
@OlympiaPiano Thanks 😊
I have a question on mesure 1, will it be possible and more practical to use LH 1 on the F3 in place of the A3 and LH 3 on the C3 and use the RH 1 on the A3 and RH2 on the C4? Using pedal to maintain the white dotted notes during the measure?
Thank you for such a thoughtful question. As long as you hold the pedal until beat 2 measure 2 this can work.
My piano teacher has me keep my wrist up and even with my knuckles the whole time. I’ve never seen it done like this.
Great question! Every piano teacher has their own style. What I am showing you is how I have been taught, played and taught my students for 30+ years. My suggestion would be to see which method feels the most natural to your hand and do it that way.
Thanks!
Thank you and glad to see what you are studying! The best exercises out there. Once you get the notes down, do not read them on the page, but rather look at your hands and make sure you are doing the motion that the exercise is calling for. Let me know if you have any questions!
You make music so beautiful, clear and exciting, Ms Bowman. After an accident, I'm finally finding a little bit of courage to pick up where I stopped with your tutorials. You asked in the video what we're working on. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I've been using guitar/piano chords from the internet or booklets. Don't you think that makes a person lazy? Especially with regards to losing motivation to read sheet music well? For example my treble clef line reading is fair but my bass line reading has gotten quite rusty. How does one strengthen that? I really appreciate you. I'm starting again with baby steps. Bless you
Thank you for your kind comment. I am glad to hear you are recovering from an accident. Music can help you! With regards to reading sheet music well I would say to focus on the intervals and see if you can feel them with your fingers. If your left hand is rusty, just start small---2nds and 3rds--learn to see and feel the difference between them (thirds look the same line-line or space-space whereas 2nds look different line-space, space-line). Baby steps are ok--just glad you are back with us. And most importantly remember we are PLAYING the piano (so it is supposed to be fun!) Best wishes!
Thank you very much for these videos! They are so helpful. I just started the green book and only got as far as #5 without needing some help. So glad I found your channel.
Very happy to hear that the videos helped you with Dozen a Day (one of the best groups of exercises out there!) Thank you for watching

I am putting a dot on my map for you right now!
As usual, so helpful.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for clarifying the measure on day 6. Always a pleasure to follow your tutorial on this beautiful piece.
Yes--there are so many elements, I'm glad that viewer asked the question--many composers in the romantic era used the pedal as a major tool for sustain.
Merci
Thank you very much for watching!
You are a genius!! but a curiosity.... It's nice to hear the notes in Italian with an English accent, but why don't you use the notes with English notation?
I'm not sure I understand the question--but if you are referring to the Solfege Do Re Mi, I don't use the English words C-D-E because the goal is to transpose into 12 keys. Do-Re-Mi remains constant throughout 12 keys (with movable solfege) but transposing you would have to change the letter names. I hope I answered your question correctly thank you for watching
@@OlympiaPiano Thanks for answer. Is nice listen latin notes, in my country we use it.
I think the Solfege is the best. We don't use it here in the USA enough in piano, but I think it is really important!!! You didn't let me know your country--I am putting dots on my world map for my viewers. Please let me know
The videos on this piece are simply a gold mine, thank you!
You are most welcome. Thank you for subscribing and I would love to know how the piece goes for you!
