Diagnostic Assessment for Your Language Arts Classroom
In this video, we focus on using diagnostic assessments during the first 20 days of the school year to understand where your students are in their literacy skills. Establishing a strong foundation through diagnostic assessment allows you to identify individual student needs and adjust your teaching strategies accordingly.
We’ll cover specific assessment tools, including writing exercises aimed at making writing fun and stress-free while observing students' storytelling and paragraph skills. Spelling diagnostics provide insights into students' foundational language skills, from phonics to word patterns. Additionally, tools like the Acadiance Maze and Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) help assess reading comprehension and fluency, guiding group placements for guided reading sessions.
This diagnostic phase is about gathering valuable information without overwhelming yourself. You’ll learn how to triage areas of need, focusing especially on “bridge kids” who are close to reaching grade-level expectations. This video highlights the importance of community-building, advocating for student support, and using the first few weeks to establish effective routines that set the stage for a successful literacy program all year long.

Well illustrated, thanks
Hello!!!
Thank you so much for your helpful information
Thank you so much. Hope to learn more about teaching English using inquiry -based learning
Any suggestions on how to incorporate home base desk and include flexible seating?
Amazing loved it 😍 This is so helpful. Watched all of it.
Hi from India
"Promo sm"
are you still giving these?
Im teaching 5-7 my first year teaching 😅
Any ideas on a K-1 split? They just seem to be starting from such a different place.
I love your enthusiasm. Thank you for making this powerful video. I am going to try choice boards!
You can do it!
Hi! This is my first year being a teacher and I just want to say all of your videos have been so informative and helpful for me :) I appreciate it so much
You are so welcome!
'promosm' 😭
Great 👍
Amazing 👏
I only have 55 minute language art classes every day, how would I use this template in my own class?
sorry, where is the link for the free pdf for the cute poster?
First time teaching a split, first time teaching a full year by myself. I'll be teaching a grade 5/6 split.
I'm still waiting for my fingerprints to clear and I a got 4/5 split. Students are going of their 5th day of school tomorrow and I'm still waiting to be cleared :D
#icanspiral i learned how to set up a five day schedule with spiraling (minds on, reflect/connect, then three days of math centres) makes great sense. thank you!
After watching this video, I have a better understanding of how to spiral math using the curriculum and how to implement it by planning weekly program ( 3 part lesson and guided math). #icanspiral
Glad it was helpful! Stay tuned for more Math videos coming soon!
i'd like to see an example

Hello hello! We decided to make a whole bunch of videos around this topic and put them all into one playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLwXqly-LMCIoxm_vLlIGTpTeUJnCIF1J9.html
This year, I was teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade split but in August, I will be teaching first and second grade split class
thats a unique split!
2/3 grade split.
Great and easy to understand !!!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video. I love it and I learn a lot from it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
New teacher in Mexico City and am struggling with planning and teaching a UOI. I have a hard time connecting all the essential elements into a cohesive lesson plan with each learning experience building off the next.
I'm not sure how different our curriculum is but i've a lot of helpful tips for this in the Teacher Tips playlist!
thanks it was helpful
Loved all the ideas you shared. I will be trying out M.A.T.H. centres and use my Big idea to create centres that touch on different strands. Thank you for sharing! #icanspiral
I love your video! Thank you!
thanks
You're welcome!
I don't think that the priority should be getting though all the curriculum. That should not come at the expense of SEL, regardless of it being a split or not. It's more important to get to know your students so that they trust you enough to take risks and learn in class than it is to follow a pacing guide to the T.
Wow!
I need those
This is an older video, but stay tuned as we work on a NEW Ignited Math program! In the meantime, these pages are available on our store madlylearning.com/shop !
Thank you, please keep posting! So informative for a new teacher :)
Thank you! Will do!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas. I am hoping to try some of the Inquiry tasks you included at the end of the video. #icanspiral
Amazing! Be sure to let us know how it goes!!
Thank you for sharing this. Just a bit of feedback. It is difficult to see the timeslots and what is written in each of them.
Sorry about that, we will see if we can improve on future videos!
This was a great way to create a class schedule! Thank you for the walk through. Love your template style and colours 😊
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the info and for the clear explanation about what it means to spiral the math curriculum. I like the idea of centers, but have never used them with my students in the later junior grades. I will definitely give them a try. #icanspiral
Amazing! Be sure to let us know how it turns out!
I don't know how to format for the total. Is there an explanation on your FB page?
Pop into our Facebook group and we can better assist you through the chat!
Thank you for having me!! It was so much fun chatting!! :)
Hi Patti 👋🏼 Fellow Canadian teacher here! I loved watching this and hearing all of the differences you shared! I always notice these when watching TH-cam videos/following Insta posts/reading blogs from American teachers because it honestly is like speaking another language! It is neat that teachers have such different roles in various parts of the world. I look forward to watching your other videos and following along into the future!
Thank you so much! It truly is a different challenge teaching in Canada vs America! Look forward to hearing from you; try joining our Facebook group!
I will be teaching multiple grades 6-9 in all subjects
I'm teaching 5-7 😅 it's my first year and I'm nervous!
Is goal board like Rubrics. It's really very fun. Can you please share the templet of all the boards.
