These 5 tips are a super effective way to instantly improve your mix by making it cleaner and giving more space for other elements in the song. 1. Use stereo imaging You can instantly clean up your mix and have a better placement of your elements by using stereo imaging. Try to make some elements wider and some more narrow or even mono to use all available spaces in your mixdown and create a three-dimensional space for the listener. This can be applied to instruments, but also drums. 2. Panning Try to not place all elements in the mix in the middle. Add some variety by panning things to the left or to the right as this will add a nice touch to the overall listening experience, but also it will separate the elements and clean things up. 3. Lowcutting The most important part of the frequency spectrum to take care of is the low end. If you’re starting out, try to low cut more than you’re comfortable with to get rid of unnecessary low and low mid frequencies. Other than the sub, no instrument really needs anything below 100Hz. Even in the 200 - 300 Hz range a lot can be cut out. 4. Reverb To have a consistent sound and space in your mix, try to use one reverb plugin with the same settings (except for decay and mix) on all of your needed elements. 5. Processing Your Reverb To not let your reverb wash out your mix and take up too much space, try to sidechain the reverb to your initial signal and EQ it to only let essential frequencies be affected by the reverb. Fadr: An online platform letting you split up songs into their stems using AI. This can be super helpful for having a closer look at certain songs or if you want to experiment with elements from your favorite songs.
