Cross Border Dual Sport - Moab Long Play - Our Best Routes In 2024

    Great video Sean. The opening drone footage is particularly cinematic. Did you take most of the footage used ? (obv other than the final clip where the rider behind you arrives at the crash site). Were you all wearing helmet mounted GoPro's ? I know you were early into the drone thing and had a pretty large one. What are you currently using ? I have yet to master flying a drone and manipulating the gimbal at the same time. I rely primarily on the pre-programmed "quickshots".

    • @seansteede
      @seansteede 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi John - so great to run into you and Rhonda yesterday, wish we had more time to catch up. The drone video is mine, but most of the GoPro video footage is from my friend Martin's Mini 11. My Session 5 footage just wasn't up to snuff without the good quality stabilization so I binned it after this ride and just used Martins. I forgot to bring my GoPro 9 which takes fantastic stabilized video, so much so I've not seen any reason to upgrade yet. I bought a used Mini 11 due to smaller form factor but it heats up, shuts down, and has constant SD card errors making me factory reset it and virtually unusable so I think my next action cam will likely be DJI. My GoPro Hero 9 is excellent for now, though even that camera requires me to pull the battery every so often to reset it - then it works great for a some time before having to do it again. GoPro can be very frustrating at times and I'm not willingly leaving their ecosystem but enough is enough. My drone is a the DJI Mini 3 Pro and I LOVE it - does everything I think I'll ever want...for now! Quickshots are a great place to start - I'm only now venturing into replicating and customizing those with stick and gimbal controls. Frankly it takes a lot of flying and I'm guilty of only flying for the shot and not practicing flying for the sake of flying....lots of interesting YT videos on stick control that have helped me. In Moab next week and intend to use the drone as much as I can....so small I often forget I have it! All the best.

      @@seansteede We could have used more time indeed. Hopefully next time it will be over a beer as well. I am still using a GoPro 8 and I have the same freeze-up issue which requires a battery pull to reset, but it only happens infrequently. I have the DJI Mini 2 which doesn't have object avoidance, and I have crashed it a couple of times. Fortunately DJI is very good re repairs and I have it back to working fine with very little cost or time. I am also guilty of only taking the drone out for a shot that I want, and never practicing flying at all. Chicken corners looks sketchy indeed, but great footage. It reminds me of that little ditty of yours "...going to do some sketchy shit, do-dah, do-dah ... lol

    An XT250 is my dream bike. Some people aspire for a KTM, or GS. I Started with a stupid adventure bike with terrible fragility, top heaviness and ridiculously road biased tires. I have a DR650 which is great for logging roads and pavement but the XT would let me explore with a lot less apprehension and more fun on Van island. I rode one 10 years ago on my beginner rider course and it was a blast around town and the twisty roads. I only want my DR650 and an XT250 in the garage now with the simple old school screw adjustable valves, snail chain adjustors, no cooling water and made in Japan build quality.

      It depends on what kind of riding you desire. Check out my channel for Moab content. We rode for 5 days and covered a lot of territory ranging from large dual sport / ADV acceptable rides, to more technical small dual sport / dirt bike type rides. What type of bike you are on and what type of trails you like will determine where to ride. Moab basically has it all. Personally, my favourite area is called the Sand Flats (which is far from flat) and included Hells Revenge / Fins & Things / Slickrock. I've posted videos on those and that is all small dual sport or dirt bike riding. On the other side of town is where this video was filmed and is larger dual sport / ADV type riding. We just scratched the surface in 5 days. To the North of Town you have the Monitor & Merrimack trail aka Seven Mile Rim and the Soverign trail system, and even further to the Northwest is the White Wash Sand Dunes OHV area if you wanna try your hand at the soft stuff.....I could move there for a few months and not see it all! Good luck.

      I’m sure Pol Tarres could do it with ease but I would not recommend it. The majority of it would be no problem with a big ADV bike, but there are a few transitions / ledges and such that would pose quite a problem for the vast majority of riders. A T7 in the right hands might be ok, but a 1200GS no way!

      Its a Moose Tail Rack I purchased from Procycle but appears they dont carry it any longer - I found it here though - www.revzilla.com/dirt-bike/moose-racing-expedition-rear-top-rack-yamaha-xt250-2008-2021?sku_id=597425

      Overall I'm super happy with it. The wider rack gives lots of hand holds for lifting while also supporting luggage better than a narrower setup for some of my overnight trips. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    Awesome video. Looking forward to hitting some of these spots best spring. What made you downsize from the Africa Twin ? The XT is a great bike. I’m on a DR 650 now but considering a smaller lighter ride for exploring.

    • @seansteede

      Glad you enjoyed. The AT was such an excellent bike and it performed at or beyond my expectations. But after lifting the bike by myself a few too many times, often 50km or more from the nearest help, and considering I am getting older, I just felt the need to get something that would help reduce the risks. I also have a bad habit of never wanting to turn around. That caused some problems on the AT when gravel road becomes two track, and eventually single track. With the XT, I can push through till I can't and still be ok with turning around with little effort. The motor is anemic, as is the suspension, but it's a grunty little goat and keeps me out of trouble while helping me smile all day long! I took a course with Tyler from eveRide and the single take away was that it's way more fun to ride hard on a little bike compared to riding tentative on a big bike. Good luck!

      @@tyee4u old post but fwiw, sounds like we're the same age, have had a xr650l for 20yrs, picked up a xt225 mostly to hang on the back of the camper...did some upgrades like spirings and seat..now it's my go to and will likely sell off the 650..just too much work..and it kinda sucks on the hiway too, that's where the Vstrom takes over..so no real point to the 650 lately.. what did you end up doing?

    Would you say Hell's Revenge is any harder than Fins and Things or Porcupine?

    • @seansteede
      @seansteede 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So that is a tough question. A few steeper and longer pitches, and slightly harder step ups than Fins & Things and more "threatening" sidehill - but skill wise I was say if you can do F&T then Hells Revenge should be no problem. We learned that many folks bail out on the final leg of HR and return via the parking lot which easier - you can see that in the video where we are questioning if we are on the right trail or not. We turned around on a big step up on Porcupine Rim and went back to do Hells Revenge so cannot comment on that ride. I'd like to try PR on my next trip. How would you compare Porcupine Rim to Fins & Things?

    • @aka_Locke
      @aka_Locke 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seansteede PR has a couple of gnarly parts that are harder than F&T. Mostly bigger step ups and more technical sections. But it doesn't have as big of grades to ascend. So it depends on what you consider difficult/scary. So if you're a good single track rider, PR is not bad. But if you prefer to hit bigger ascents and have better views, then F&T is WAY better. My friends and I have gone to Sand Flats every year in October for the last 6 years now and we don't even ride PR anymore. It's just not as enjoyable. We hit 7-mile and all the other trails in Sand Flats.

    • @seansteede

      @@aka_Locke Great to know - and agree with your comment "depends on what you consider difficult or scary". We learned that every part of our group has different concerns. I love sand - another guys HATES it....sounds like we made the right call by heading over to Hells Revenge. We did parts of 7 Mile to access M&M but will do the whole thing next time. Thanks for the info!
