Torrential rains & lack of speed led to a sand obstacle before arriving at camping destination on Day1 of Expedition. @twotracktrek is not pictured since he had speed & the fresh sand to get through without an issue. It wasn't until the 2nd & 3rd through were hung up in the deep sand and without enough speed, it was time to problem solve. After lots of digging and winch recovery, it was decided...

Guide to install hitch on Subaru Wilderness Outback 2022
Amazing video . Thank you for making it and share it. Cleared things better for me.
All the people in the comments and this video of Primitive skid plate have a "HUGE FLAW" in its design and installation: 1, if you removed the factory "Black Steel Cross (H) Bar"! You are doomed! that black steel cross (H) plate bar is there to protect and support the engine PERMANENTLY! You actually think that little puny 3/16" thickness aluminum from Primitive is going to protect you engine better than that factory "Black Steel Cross (H) Bar"? You're in a world of hurt! Do your research! Here on youtube, just type in "Rival USA Skid Plate for Subaru Outback Installation" and watch the youtube video to find out why you should never remove that "Black Steel Cross (H) Bar"! This is a "Public Service Announcement" to all Subaru Owners who want to install any "Skid Plate". No affiliation whatsoever on my end here!
Yeaaaa I don’t know about drilling into my 2024 outback with 200 miles on it. Might take a pass on these
Do you have a guide to build this?
Did the ko2s kill your mpg?
Yeah it did. They are heavy tires
Did a 2012 outback today. First was the hardware bag was broke open. Second is the bolts. No bracket to base bolts. The downloaded directions are half of what a owner needs. I got 3/8” stainless carriage bolts and locknuts. It was tricky but it looks awesome and a lot stronger than what they were supposed to send. The plastics were a surprise and the second one I left in place but pulled the plastic keepers and pulled the plastic away from the car an inch then trimmed the bottom and replaced the keepers. The second one went on in half the time. The drilling was better on the second one. I did it alone and it wasn’t too bad. Good thing that I’m a master tech or it would have taken all day. My neighbor at work does Subaru repair and he had to fire his slacker and I pick up a few jobs a week from him.
Save those brace plates!
Hanging in the garage. Lol
Do you have a gas tank protection for the Outback 2023 non-turbo?
I dont. I know a few companies sell them.
He's a talker.
Great video… what size tires are you running ?
245/65/17 ko2's. And thanks for watching
Thank you 🙏🏻 much for the install video. The online directions were not that helpful. We had a hell of a time drilling the darn holes! Now ai just need to trim the side skirts to get them to fit.
One of the only install videos I could find on this. Thank you for that. The instructions seem somewhat vague. I haven’t started yet, but my biggest question so far is why they recommend center punching the bottom of the circle you mark out on the pinch weld, and if that’s how you drilled your holes. The picture in the instructions make it look like it’s just above the bottom outline of the mark.
What I did was set the rock siders up and supported with jack and stands and mark the holes . Center punched and drilled. Had maybe one or two holes that were off just a bit. Make sure you have the slider pushed up all the way with the Jack. Mainly in the center to get rid of the little bit of drooping before marking the holes. Some spots you will have to scrape seam sealer a bit so it sits all the way up. Hardest part of installing was drilling because of tight location. Recommend a right angle drill.
@@madmattsubieman9807 thank you for replying so quickly! I decided to just give a stab at it this morning. M12 90 degree drill was a huge help. First one went as smooth as a first one could go. No big issues. Mainly just having to do things multiple times because I was trying to get ahead of myself with the carpet cover and the plastic cover. Besides that everything seemed to work correctly. Did not get around to cutting the plastic side skirt yet that the wilderness has. Not even sure where to start with trimming that yet but I’ll get at that soon. I did however follow their direction on center punching the bottom of marked holes. I went up maybe a 1/16th or less from bottom because I was still skeptical, but i didn’t have any issues with the bolts fitting through. Started prepping the driver side and pulling off all the covers, but ran in to some issues with the kit that I’m going to have to contact Rallitek about. So I put it all back together for now. They’re about 10 minutes from me though so hopefully I can get this finished up soon. Running around with only one slider and no plastic skirt on one side looks pretty funky. Thanks again for the advice.
Plastic side skirts I just started trimming 1/2 inch at a time off the bottom until it fit snugly
@@madmattsubieman9807 awesome, thanks for the help. Will try next weekend hopefully.
What gauge tubing did you use?
2x2 x 1/8 inch wall.
@@madmattsubieman9807 do you think 16 gauge 1/16 would be to thin I have some sitting around and was thinking of using it to build a tire carrier like that?
@@johnsambolin6474 you are gonna want to use heavier gage for the portion that goes into reciever. Same gage as you're hitch. Tractor supply store or family farm and home store has a raw pre made peice that I used so you still can use you hitch. I then got a peice that welds to that and slides into your hitch, and you build off of that. I would think 1/16 wall would be ok. I used what I had also . That happened to be 1/8.
I decided I'm going to make these myself while using these as a design inspiration, so I can avoid the steep cost! I know someone with an industrial laser cutter. Will be able to weld those brackets and rivet them to the plate. The only challenge will be those vents
Was thinking. By the time you buy 3/16 aluminum plate and have someone cut it, weld it, bend it and not to mention make sure all your mounting points are correct it might be cheaper to buy them. Just my opinion. Metal isn't cheap these days. Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@madmattsubieman9807 the guy I know has the aluminum on hand at his shop. He would just need to cut it and help me bend the plate. The mounting point placement is actually significantly easier than originally expected, as it takes the same mounting points as that H bracket already on the car from the factory. So just line it up with that and you're good!
Nice! What brand and what are the size of those tires?
Careful; @32:00 my ears began to bleed!
Sorry. Pretty new at this and wasn't loud when editing.
Have a similar setup and am trying to decide if I should fabricate the tire carrier myself or go with the Wilco high hitch gate. You’ve given me some good ideas. I like that you have two mounting points. Also really like the side mounting plates for your roto pax. Great job!
Yeah I built mine because of cost . The rack wings are what they are. My buddy manufacturers them. Orbis overlanding is his site. I have them on both my rigs on both sides. You can mount just about anything on them.
Subaru used a Russian manufacture for the skidd plates. The war started, no more plates.
Yes don’t worry but there is light Primitive racing in Oregon and you will get real skid plates 3/8 “ thick with good instructions just go oline
That's one sick setup. Love it. Ordered my '23 OBW yesterday.
Thanks for making this video to show us how simple it is. My plates are on the way and you answered all the questions I had.
That camra makes it look short like a crosstrek
Out of all the other rock rails/rock sliders available from the aftermarket, these seem to be the ones that offer the best protection. Any footage of these getting torture-tested through obstacles?
Good job 👍 is there a ko2 size that fits the wilderness and the spare tire holder in the cargo area?
Not that I know.
Where can we buy skid plates for our 19 Outback with the 2.5 liter naturally aspirated engine? We want to buy skid plates for the engine, oil pan and rear differential.
Ours are Primitive racing. There is Rallitek, I believe LP Adventure. Those are top 3 I can think of. Check there web sites. Also Rallitek check on Orbis overlanding site
@@madmattsubieman9807 Thank You so much for the info. I appreciate it
where can I buy these skid plates?
Primitive racing on their website
nice job on the video and very helpful, as you said, not much out there for the 22 wilderness..thanks for taking the time.
Thanks for watching. Working on the video for lift kit install but having trouble with the files. Hopefully soon.
This is my next on the list and debating on LP and RalliTek. Good informative video as always!!!!
Did you notice any creaking sound when breaking? Mind making that noise while braking and doing a turn.
Nothing so far. Maybe check that bolts haven't come loose
Apparently the torque spec wasn’t enough and had to add more to it and that eliminated the creaking issue, also have you ever thought of just cutting th oem skid plate to cover up the side opening?
@@Pogee941 yup, I did cut them and put them on and took them to clean under and haven't put them back on. Lol. I will be checking torque specs before our trip coming up.
I had a chat with them and mentioned there are plans on fabrication of side splash shield but it won’t be for another months no ETA but it’s good to know it’s on there list because am considering cutting it for sure specialy when Fall seasons starts!
dang, thats quite the install. those look good though, but im glad i went with the lp sliders
Ya to be honest I actually liked the lp looks better, but after see the rallitek they will offer more protection then the lp. Rallitek sticks out alot further then the lp and will push your rig out and away from trees and other taller objects.
Thanks, your video was helpful
Son unos HOTBABY.Uno de los mejoresy conciertos Mañas no 10 se l 💯💞😍
Strong look there Matt! Well done! 👍 😊 Thanks for the video! Would you mind sharing that Amazon link where the rear racks hinge comes from? Cheers
Do those tires rub at all?
Not at all. Even before we put a 2 inch lift. That video is coming out this week
Look forward to that video as well. I really like that tire carrier you made and the front light bar they give a couple of ideas thanks.
@@roymontiel2577 thankyou sir. Videos should of been out last week but had some technical difficulties. Going to mess with them this week. Should be out this weekend.
Skid plates. I’m guessing that’s so when you’re for 4X4 you don’t scratch the bottom of the engine. Is that correct? You said you bought some skid plates can I ask how much they cost?
If I remember they are around 500 I paid. I think. Primitive racing is the brand.
What awning do you have on the outback? I have a Amazon basket wondering if I can mount a similar awning, likely 270.
It's a Yescom . 7 1/2 foot by 8. All awnings mount pretty much the same. Some people including myself used plates to mount instead of the supplied brackets. When I get home I will send a picture.
@@madmattsubieman9807 is that a 270 batwing?
@@PrithwirajGhoshRoy no, just a single side.
@@madmattsubieman9807 planning on doing a primitive racing skid plate install on my outback 2016 pretty soon. What is your observation on your mpg and any sag on oem springs?
@@PrithwirajGhoshRoy they are light weight aluminum so dont weigh much. As far as gas no difference or with the springs, no sagging. Now our car is a turbo and gas mileage isn't that great to begin with.
This is a nice build, well done.
Thank you. I see a few small detail changes I may make, but its solid overall.
Great video, the tire carrier looks really good. I’d be interested to see how it holds up using the tow points over time with bumpy trails and stuff. But damn it looks good!
It mounts on the receiver and tow point. The ones you can buy only mount in the reciever. So I'm sure my will handle bumps better.
dont you need to air down your tires to go off road? you should need a compressor to air them back up anyways right?
Ya we air down when off road but shouldn't have to air up when you need to use your spare. To each his own I guess. We plan on using spare tire wheel well for tools. And we do have a compressor we take when offroad, just dont carrying it on a daily basis.
Nice work!
Thanks! Thanks for checking it out.
I am one of those people who got a NON KO2 AT tire ( for weight and MPG concerns) and of course it does not fit in the spare well. But as Matt mentioned others online mentioned letting air out, so I tried that and as I let air out my tire DID go FURTHER into the well compartment, but WOULD not sit flat and Can not be screwed in as the stock is (not that it needs to be since it is snug). I could not fit the foam tool holder on top and close the compartment lid. HOWEVER I was able to EASILY shut the compartment lid WITHOUT the foam Tool caddy. And there is TONS of room down there for everything you need and more, Just not in the foam tray fitted to the stock tire. Personally I do not want the scissor jack or the stock tire irons. In fact the ONLY thing I saved out of that foam tray is the rescue pin that screws into the bumper. As I said I had already let most of the air out of the tire. It still has a bead and would support the car, and I DO carry a compressor. But honestly there is a lot of room left in there if you do not replace that foam tool tray and I think that I can air up that tire again and still shut that compartment (I haven't tried). I know it won't go down quite as far, but I think it would go down far enough, and as I said, there is plenty of room for all the stock tools, and additional tools or water bottles or whatever. Just use a bag or wrap them in burlap. Not knocking the spare tire mount idea, I was going to do that, and may, but I like the idea of using that space as intended and having more capability for hauling bikes and whatnot without dealing with the spare on a swing hitch. I think others might benefit from this spare well compromise. For reference I have Motegi 7.5" wheels (bigger) and Falken Wildpeak AT Trail Tires 245/65/17's No rubbing or clearance issues, and these will fit in the spare well provided they are at a slight angle and not flat on the bottom, and MAY need to be aired down a tad to be more compliant, which is NOT a big deal. They will still hold the car up and can be pumped up. As I said, I will try to add air and see if they still fit well enough to shut the compartment door. I WAS trying to get them to set all the way flat, which does NOT work. If these links work they are pics of my oversized spare in the well at an angle with no tray above it, and the cargo Compartment with the spare well hatch fully shut and flat. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10221161903703638&set=p.10221161903703638&type=3&__cft__[0]=AZXHkMK_7zi8oxMNfb1nG_BIDx8E0RIX_-bKXIQ3eBxH3oi7KwhdTAoYMIU_pV_jQLwr-pxUHz00fyfFjuvshgvKECSdatYahNCGQfMlWJn7yOoqZVWQ5S23uiMDVJAkL06CJqbfltFIwu9gCX-dImUj&__tn__=R]-R __facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10221161597295978&set=p.10221161597295978&type=3&__cft__[0]=AZXHkMK_7zi8oxMNfb1nG_BIDx8E0RIX_-bKXIQ3eBxH3oi7KwhdTAoYMIU_pV_jQLwr-pxUHz00fyfFjuvshgvKECSdatYahNCGQfMlWJn7yOoqZVWQ5S23uiMDVJAkL06CJqbfltFIwu9gCX-dImUj&__tn__=R]-R Databyter
Thank you for watching & thanks for your response. It is always good to know the options. Thank you for sharing your ideas/tire choice. The tire carrier option is not for everybody. The KO2s are not for everybody either. We do have a small off road trailer to utilize as space as well which has room for our kayaks or bikes for those types of trips...its all depends upon which type of adventure you are planning...or not planning!!
Any rubbing with the bigger tire??? How’s the ride??
No rubbing on stock height and really dont notice a difference in the ride.
This was VERY helpful! You did a great job and reduced my anxiety about doing this myself on my new WO….I installed a CURT hitch on my CrossTrek and it’s been great. Thanks again!
Hey sorry everyone for the miss spelling of subaru when list the part number.
The factory hitch looks so much better
As long as the dealer dont screw it up. Lol. Seen alot of pictures of hack jobs. The only difference between Curt and the factory is Curt hangs maybe inch and half lower. Other the that no difference. Expect factory you have to cut the hell out of your bumper cover. Thanks for the comment and watching. You have a great week.
@@madmattsubieman9807 Doesn't the 1.5" lower hitch height vs. OEM hitch height negate the Wilderness' raised suspension advantage? Departure angle suffers even more. Defeats the purpose of buying a Wilderness, IMHO.
@@jkjome4095 never had a issue with that. We have had it a year now . The car is used offroad road a lot. And I'm not talking dirt roads. Also 2 inch lift is installed on it.
