I have seen this film 30 times. I used to wonder where it came from, and people often asked me that question. Now I know, to some extent. It did not appear by magic. Watch, "Dangerous Beauty", and read "Morality Play" (Barry Unsworth). Helgeland certainly did both of these before 2001.

Me and my first D&D group did the chant (ish) when we were cheering on our DM when he went to Smash tournament. Such an insignificant thing, but us chanting "He's Tall, He's Tan, He plays Samus Aran, Nikolas, Nikolas!" From the bean bag zone at the back of the foyer was apparently so side splitting funny to him he almost lost in his first round. He placed 19th of 42, so, yknow, he didn't do too bad. I like to think we boosted his confidence a bit. Edit- For Context, Nik is tall but pale as fuck, but he had a really bad suntan from a holiday he'd been on to Australia a week before. It looked really, really weird. He also only picked Samus in the first round, but our party Bard, a bloke named Ross, was an actual musician and we had been talking about this film on the ride over. So he just started chanting that, and we all joined in. Gave the crowd a decent chuckle, and it threw Nik into hysterics. He got by that round on luck, clipped Ross's ear, and had a good laugh with us while he waited for his next round. Ross couldn't think of a decent rhyme for Kirby on the next round, so the joke died there.

These guys are great trolls, they got an even money bet against a single guy vs. an entire tournament _with multiple champions._ With fatigue and small injuries added in the odds must be heavily in their favor(60%+) regardless of how good someone is at jousting.
